About
Welcome to Boat-hotel De Barge, definitely Bruges’ most original hotel. De Barge, which formerly plied the Bruges-Ghent canal, is today a well-known character three-star hotel, which floats on the Bruges-Ghent Canal. 2461 feet from Bruges Railway Station. Easily reachable by car due to its location near the old ramparts of the city. The central Market Square and the Belfry of Bruges are within 20 minutes on foot from De Barge. Entering the old city center can be done via park “Minnewater”, also known as The Lake of Love. The nonsmoking cabins at De Barge have a nautical atmosphere with its characteristic boat decorations and blue colors. All the rooms have windows looking out on the canal (except the 5 Cruise Cabins at the Quay side), a private bathroom, and a little desk area. Guests can relax at the lounge, and have a drink at the honesty bar. In the morning, you can enjoy a breakfast buffet with fresh breads, eggs, bacon, cold cuts, cheeses, juices and fruits. Have a nice cup of coffee or tea while you watch the boats drive by on the water.

- Nautical atmosphere, great breakfast, fast wifi

- We chose this hotel because we thought it would be a unique experience to stay on a barge. Everything clean and warm, although a little dated. The view across the canal was nice in the morning and breakfast was great. The location was nice on the south edge of the city, right next to the train with €7 daily parking, and across the street from the buses. We walked a lot and it was 20 min to be in the heart of downtown Brugge. Overall, it was interesting with very kind and friendly morning staff. I would recommend for an individual more than a couple, but it worked for us, and now we've stayed on a barge.
Cons -
- The staff not friendly and the place very expensive for this old place with Foul odors, sewage smell and I paid 15 euros for parking per day and not private parking it’s on the street just behind the container of the trash
- The photos were a little misleading on the size of the rooms. We had to shuffle around each other most of the time and could not freely move about because the room was so small. Also, the shower water temperature fluctuated during the shower and we each had to avoid standing directly under the water because it would get so hot it could almost burn, but only sometimes. Maybe when someone flushed the toilet?
- The room and bathroom especially were quite run down / tatty. The furnishings were not great and needed tidying up. It felt like the floor had not been cleaned properly. The shower broke quite dramatically and we nearly had a flood. It's a shame there were no bar facilities as the communal areas of the hotel looked very nice but we didn't use them because 20 euros for breakfast is too expensive and it was closed the rest of the time.

The location was nice. It was a 5 minute walk from the station and only 15 minutes walk into the town centre. It was also lovely to be on the water and to hear the river sounds from our bedroom. The beds were comfortable too.

Nice location The idea of sleeping on a barge
We had problems with the plumbing - were sent to toilets next door and were told someone would repair the toilet before 5:00 pm, which did not happen / so we moved all of our stuff into the other room and the next day had to move back into the first room / no compensation and no recognition of the upset this has caused us Grumpy staff member who did not understand basic English The bar was advertised as open but no one worked there when we wanted something - so we went next door
Love an old vibe of this barge, right on a canal and next to the amazing park with linden trees.
I will start with the good things. The location is great, it’s near the train station and 15-20 minutes away from the city center. Beds are confortable and the staff is friendly.
I think we paid too much for what was offered. Paid less for a very modern three star hotel in the very centre of Brussels. Here the room is too hot! Even if you sleep with the fan on, you still wake up sweaty. There’s humidity smell everywhere as well. The last night, the room above ours seemed to be having a tap dance competition or something, because they even woke us up with all the walking and floor noise. And when you shower, the water is constantly changing from very hot to warm then to cold, so not even the shower was a good experience. I expected more after paying almost 300€ for 2 nights. The place needs a good update and a renewal, or to charge more accordingly to what’s actually being given. Sadly, I won’t be coming back here for a next visit to Bruges.
This is a charming hotel right on the canal. The buffet breakfast is an additional cost, but quite nice with a good variety of things to choose from. There were both hot and cold items to select. The front garden was a great place to sit and have a beer of wine during the heatwave. The rooms were quite comfortable and there was good water pressure in the showers. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. We'd certainly stay here again.
Everything was great, though the heatwave made things a bit sticky.
My partner and I suffered bed bug bites. It is very hot. Not comfortable. Staff started talking at 7 am and woke us up
The location and Altus magic of being on a boat
Needs really a renovation, it’s old, lights flickering and even short circuited in our room . Didn’t expect the rooms to be that small.
Not sure. We never really connected with any staff
Far from the center of town. Smells of sewer were noticeable.
Absolutely loved this little gem. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Location was perfect, close enough to walk to the city centre and far enough out of the centre to be quiet at night.
We booked a dinner for 9 that was delicious. Service also very good.
Late check-in failed because I got a wrong door code.
We arrived very late in the day but the instructions on how to check in were very clear and we had no issues. The rooms, although basic, were very comfortable and had great views of the canal. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Good location near the station (about a 7 minute flat walk. Close to the free shuttle bus stop. Only a 20 minute casual stroll into the main square. Great setting on the canal. We were visited by ducks and geese each morning. Breakfast was more thann enough.
Very warm and cozy. Well located close to train station and Bruges canals. Nice décor and good idea for a hotel!
Could have done with another pillow or two.
This hotel is a great choice, especially for dog lovers. The hotel is in an exellant location, easily accessible to the city center. The food is outstanding, from the breakfast to the dinner. I highly recommend the hotel for a plesant stay.
Location of the barge, and it was different to stay on a boat, lovely and quiet and was great location for the train station for travelling around.
Do feel for the price paid a limited continental breakfast could have been included as there were no facilities to make a hot drink unless you paid extra for a kettle.
Although there was an issue with my room and I decided to not sleep over (an issue can always happen), I have to say that the location was very nice and the room my brother and his wife stayed in was perfect.I received my payment back, so very good customer service.
In the end I did not sleep over and drive back home to Antwerp. The bedroom had a strong smell, I would compare it to the smell of “diesel fuel”… for sure a headache if I would spend the night in that specific room.My brother and his wife had a room downstairs without any issues. The hotel reacted in a very correct way, apologised for the inconvenience and even repaid my stay.Since their customer service is spot on, I will give this hotel another try the next time I visit Bruges.
Great location
Not the best for winter, I think summer when the patio is open and it's a bit more lively would be better. It's a unique stay all the same
