Kick Ass Greyfriars (18+)

It was very welcoming, and I met some incredible people here. The main area, with the bar, was comfortable and laid out nicely.The rooms themselves are ok, a bit cozy but otherwise comfortable; my only issue was the heat.The location was great, and I felt safe walking around and getting to where I needed to while I stayed here.

Unfortunately, for some reason the kitchen had to be closed here which was a letdown for me and was a main reason I'd booked to stay. I also don't think walking down the road to the other hostel to use that kitchen was a satisfactory resolution.The rooms were hot, which isn't a new comment for the heatwaves in Europe and the UK which perhaps would indicate some evolutionary considerations for hostels in these countries. However, a window that could open a bit more may have helped a great deal.

Breakfast started 7:00am, I saw people leaving just before 7am to catch tours like ourself. Maybe breakfast starting 6:45am will allow people to have it and leave at 7:00am. Our tour started 7:30am.Also, I booked 2 beds for me and my mom (73 y/o) and we both got top bunk bed. If I booked 2 beds, it would be fair that we got 1 bottom bed at least. It was really hard for my mom to get in and out of the top bed.

Great location

The toilets were filthy especially in the mixed bathrooms. There was constantly pools of water on the floor and smells of urine in the showers. Yes there is lots of guests using the same toilets but they should be cleaned at least twice a day in that case. Also the bed I was put on faced the emergency exit light which was so bright I couldn’t sleep.

Nice location, and surprisingly clean for a place with a lot of shared facilities.

There is very little soundproofing so you will hear every single person passing by in the corridor—talking, shouting, and banging the doors shut. We couldn’t sleep at all one night because of all the doors banging shut. And early in the morning we heard people shouting at each other for no apparent reason. Miserable.

It was very close to all the important tourist locations in Edinburgh. The amenities inside the hostel room were pretty decent too. The bed was comfortable and there were sufficient charging points near the bed. I had my own padlocks so I used one of them at the lockers to keep my stuff when I went outside. I booked in a mixed dorm room and my roommates were mostly quiet people who kept to themselves. So, I was able to rest well after exploring the city during the day. The hostel staff were polite and friendly as well. It was overall a pleasant stay.

Locating the place when you arrive from the airport isn’t easy if you’re new to the city. When I arrived, it was raining badly and I struggled a lot to drag my suitcases with an umbrella in one hand and check Google Maps to get to the hostel. Secondly, there are lot of stairs in this hostel and NO ELEVATOR. It’s an old building so can’t really complain about it. The hostel is located in the old town of Edinburgh. If you’re solo traveling, it isn’t easy to get to your room even if you have small/medium sized suitcase. Thankfully, one of the hostel guests assisted me with carrying my suitcase to my room. It would’ve been great if the hostel had someone to help guests a bit with their luggage because there’s no elevator.

Some cups next to kettle and tea/coffee facilities in main ground area. Breakfast could be less elaborate so it could be cheaper - or perhaps a two-tier cost with eggs and ham costing extra. I only want coffee and toast and £6 is a bit steep for that.

Some downside to d dorm set-up

It was a fairly average experience. The hostel is pretty neat and clean, the staffs are helpful. Cons are: It didn't have a lift, the bathrooms for the dorms were located outside the rooms and the room I stayed in had a window with no glass at the bottom, making it pretty cold at night.

They helped Margret deal. I have disabilities and their accommodated all my disabilities with no extra cost, which made my statement, but I’m much more enjoyable and I was much more capable of doing the stuff things I had to do while I was there.

The water was a little bit cold about 7 o’clock at night, but I’m sure that’s just because everyone’s getting ready to go out in the town if they’re staying in their place overnight so it got warm enough to have a shower so not a problem

Good value. Having the bar onsite is good (until it isn’t).

With the bar and location it can noisy as all get out, very late into the morning.And the pool cues need new tips!

Location and Staff. Bed was ok. Maybe another pillow would have been good. Very thin to have a good sleep.

No curtain privacy in bed dorms, unrespectful guests, light during night, no sound proof.

Being connected to a bar it was noisy until very late. I feel like it should be mentioned in the booking options as I would have chosen a different room that was further from the bar area.

I loved that the rooms were very neat and the bathrooms were exceptionally neat as well.The sheets and duvet were comfortable and the locations was very good!I also loved that the 12 bed mixed room I stayed had a sitting areas with mirrors super easy to get my makeup done and it had a lot of windows so it was very airy.It exceeded my expectations and I enjoyed my stay

I would have loved to know ahead of time that I can pick the lower bunk.

The location is fantastic, you have evrything near you! The staff was always there and helpful. The bathrooms were always clean. The bed was super confortable!

The front desk agent Vwadeck. He was so great at his job and super helpful for me! The facilities were nice, loved the vibe, beer garden, setup. Would definitely return! Badass location too!
