About
The Witchery offers a range of opulent suites in Edinburgh, each one unique with its own special features. Lavishly furnished suites display gothic touches, with large oak beds and 4-posters, velvet-lined walls and flamboyant red and gold décor indicative of the style. There are separate seating areas and large bathrooms with free-standing silver baths. Each of The Witchery’s 9 suites is different, but walk-in dressing rooms, love seats and tapestries set the tone. Some rooms overlook Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, looking down towards Princes Street, or across to the old town. An indulgent breakfast hamper will be served in the room each morning or guests can choose to have a cooked breakfast served in the restaurant at no extra cost. The Witchery’s seductive glamor has caught the attention of The Times, The Telegraph and Condé Nast Traveler, and many celebrity fans have enjoyed its suites. The impressive restaurant also showcases fine Scottish dishes in similarly decadent surroundings.

Pros +
- Our stay at the Witchery was over-the-top amazing! Fabulous staff, amazing room, every detail taken care of. The sumptuousness of the room was top-notch. Loved the champagne waiting for us on ice - nice touch! and the hamper breakfast was great!

- This hotel was a dream come true. We booked the Old Rectory which I guess is the most Gothic room out of the bunch and we got just what we paid for. An opulent stay, in a romantic goth atmosphere. The staff was incredible, and took care of every need. Bathroom was incredibly vast and the bath itself was gorgeous. We had breakfast served to our room every morning (according to our choice) and also booked a fancy dinner at the Witchery Restaurant, which was delicious. I would highly recommend it for anniversaries or honeymoons, and I am hoping to get back one day.
Cons -
- No. Everything was perfect.
- There wasn’t anything I didn’t like.
- For over £900 for a one night stay I thought there would have been some nice complementary wine & good bottled water in the room on arrival rather than just bottles of tap water. The Garden Restaurant is beautiful & atmospheric, no doubt about that, but we found the menu very limited unless you’re a fish or game lover. The breakfast was … ok, but none of the items tasted great. The best part about breakfast was the charming gentleman serving that morning who showed a genuine interest in why we were there & what our story was. Kind, discreet, efficient, friendly breakfast service.Being asked to pay the postage for the small, silky scarf I’d left behind to be forwarded on felt a little mean considering the price of the stay.

The Witchery is unique. You feel transported back in time, but with all mod cons. The check in staff were very welcoming & friendly. The restaurant staff were also very welcoming & professional. I felt confident in their ability. The food was delicious. This was our second stay, we stayed in The Turret Room which was amazing.
There wasn’t anything I didn’t like.
Stunning, unique property. The Turret room furnishings truly made you feel like you had been taken back in time to another century. Loved feeling part of the hustle & bustle of The Royal Mile and the view beyond to the Firth of Forth & Fife was an unexpected additional treat.Being able to park & leave our car at their sister hotel, Prestonfield, was a huge bonus. The concierge staff there were very welcoming & efficient which has enticed us to perhaps try a short stay there too.

After glamping in a pod in the highlands, we booked The Witchery last minute--couple hours before we checked in--to pamper ourselves and rejuvenate before touring Edinburgh. The guardsman room was spacious with a large hall and three rooms and a bath. Great views outside the windows. The temperature was perfect--many places we stayed we had a hard time regulating this. Heated bathroom floors and a soaker tub perfect for relaxing after walking all day. The Dyson hair dryer came with many attachments including a diffuser for my curly hair! Hair straightener was also available--such a welcome touch! The breakfast had many choices and option to dine in restaurant or eat in sitting room. We chose sitting room and it was delightful. Spread out like royalty! Hotel was very close to shops, food, and the castle we were visiting. The staff held our bags, carried our bags, and helped us take them across the street when checking out. While it was very upscale, the staff were down to earth, professional and friendly. All of the furniture was comfortable and the chilled bottled water and chocolates were a nice touch. Turn down service was available as well.
The mattress was a little too firm for my liking.
Everything.Expectations were high and fully met.Room was beautiful, staff were helpful and food was outstanding
Honestly nothing.Only down side was leaving.

Incredible hotel, stayed in the Old Rectory and it was like stepping back in time. Just the most beautiful stay I was heartbroken to leave.
Very expensive and the restaurant was not value for money

Very nice breakfast in the extremely gothic and cozy dining room. Highly recommended!
The suites is situated right on the Royal Mile. We didn't know that there would be so many tourists there, so we got a bit surprised about the location being in the epicenter of all the tourist attractions. We could have done our research of course, but if you're looking for calm surroundings, maybe look elsewhere.
Beautiful historic suite in a beautiful historic location, but with great modern amenities, and helpful attentive staff. We went there for our anniversary, and loved it, and would recommend it to anyone. We stayed in the Armory suite, and we loved the busts of the alchemists, the pictures of the kings of Scotland, and the steel plate armour helmets you can pick up. Not sure they are really historic though :) The restaurant is great too if you can get a reservation, but be sure to reserve early or you will miss out...
expensive, but there is no better place to stay in the old town of Edinburgh, so worth it.
Amazing historic building, suites, dining, and staff. Top notch. The nicest and most interesting hotel we have ever seen.
It’s amazing to stay in a turret right next to the castle. I felt like a princess! And how lovely to have breakfast brought up in a basket!
It is a little hard to get to by taxi because of all the people walking the Royal Mile and also quite expensive.
The waiting staff in the restaurant were fantastic
The transfer of luggage into and out of the hotel needs to be dramatically improved. There was no help getting luggage into a taxi and that is not acceptable given the price of this accommodation- it’s a shame because otherwise it would have been a fantastic place to stay.

The accommodation was spectacular. The staff was helpful and friendly. The room was spacious and luxurious.
The Armoury is like an entire apartment with everything one can wish for. There is a coffee machine and new bottles of water delivered every day. Breakfast is in the restaurant or can be delivered to the room. The bathroom has underfloor heating. The location is great right next to the Castle and the Royal Mile.
The room and hotel were fantastic. Loved the traditional furniture and decoration. The location is the best in Edinburgh and right on the castle. The food was amazing and the service was second to none. When eating in the garden restaurant for dinner, I noticed that the stone floor had melted candle wax right under where I was sitting, this transferred onto my suede boots. The staff took them away at end of the night and professionally cleaned them for me and they came back as new. What more could I ask for!
Would have been nice to have a bar area to have pre and after dinner drinks, we really missed this being on site although there are plenty of other outside options to choose from.
Location, service, sumptuous rooms, excellent dining and the friendliest staff you’ll ever meet.
