Pros +
- It was clean, and there was a warm, welcoming fireplace lit in the entrance. The breakfast was a nice experience too, thank you.
- the staff were very nice and pleasant. the request i put in about my anniversary and they made the room very nice and special
- 4 poster bed was lovely. Seats fit for a king and queen, the room was of a very good size. Wardrobes were a decent size, enough for 2 people and an ironing board, iron and hairdryer in room. We were in the Superior King room and the decor was beautiful.
Cons -
- The room was a bit small and a little "too warm", but it was a nice stay. We wish there had been grounds for walking or something nearby.
- couldn't adjust the radiator to heat up the room sum more.
- Bathroom needs attention. For almost £500.00 per night, the wood panels and mastic were a little weathered. Broken parts were simply painted over. Bar area was cold. It was snowing yet no fire was lit and staff refused saying it was warm enough in their opinion.

Location was very good and quiet, an impressive building full of character, room was clean and well serviced
Room was very claustrophobic without a lot of daylight and lacked any comfortable chairs, facilities for making drinks was inadequate and the wardrobe was too small if staying for longer than 3 nights
Outstanding I very much loved the decor opulence as you would expect for this kind of hotel .
The bed was beautiful a bit blingy for me however that’s not my business I still had a wonderful night sleep and super grateful the room was warm .
The welcome greeting from staff, immaculate rooms and facilities
Beautiful property with lovely grounds. Wish we had more time to explore it.
It was low season (January) so I think things were very quiet and staff wasn’t super attentive (eg at hotel restaurant or library bar), but it was a lovely stay. Good breakfast and cool to stay in a castle. Perfect distance from Edinburgh.
First time writing a review and I felt like I have too, we both loved the place! So much to see and alot of attention to detail. First time visiting scotland and itll now be on our to stay list each time. Plus really friendly staff too which made the stay an extra delight
Grand castle and decorated traditionally .
Problem with the chimney in main lobby resulted in a lot of smoke and smells during our stay !
Staff were lovely people. Bed was super comfy (108). I didn't get a visit from Elizabeth the Ghost, but the grounds were beautiful.
Food at the restaurant was okay. Not the best steak I've had but it was okay.
We saw a lot of castles in Scotland but to stay in one was special. No pool, no gym but a reading room with a fire and bar to have wee dram of scotch while my wife was reading an Agatha Cristie novel and I savoured the view an atmosphere. The rose petals and swan towels on the bed was a lovely surprise. The food was excellent.
Our car had a thick frost on windscreen the next day - just joking. The staff gave us a scraper and it added to the brisk bright winters day
Quiet location. Beautiful grounds.
The room was hot.
The location was truly beautiful, surrounded by nature and quite secluded.
Our recent stay was profoundly disappointing and fell far short of the expected standards for a 4-star hotel. The issues were systemic, affecting our comfort and convenience throughout the trip.1. Unbearable Noise & Poor Room Placement:Our ground-floor room was situated directly next to what we believe was a staff utility room. This resulted in loud, disruptive noises 24/7, with zero sound isolation. 2. Chronic Lack of Amenities & Inconvenient Service: No In-Room Phone: We reported the missing phone immediately upon check-in. We were told none were available and to call the front desk with our personal phones. However, there was no cellular signal in the room, forcing us to get dressed and leave just to make a simple request. Inadequate Provisions: For three guests, the hotel provided only two small water bottles daily. Despite repeatedly asking for still water, they delivered sparkling water every day. This, coupled with the phone issue, made securing basic drinking water a daily hassle. Missing Standard Amenities: The room lacked essentials standard for this category, no dental kits, slippers, or bathrobes. The bathroom was spartan, stocked only with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, nothing more. 3. Substandard Housekeeping:Cleaning was consistently poor. We would return to find used coffee cups, items left on the floor, dusty surfaces, and discarded napkins untouched from the morning. Conclusion:While the hotel's location is excellent, it cannot compensate for the fundamental failures in service, amenities, and maintenance. Based on the complete experience, especially the noise every time someone opens a door, lack of basic conveniences, and inattentive housekeeping, this property operates at a 3-star level at best. We cannot recommend it to travelers expecting a genuine 4-star experience.
The castle itself was lovely The food was lovely Comfortable rooms Cozy bar.
We sat from 6pm for dinner and because we were given the wrong starter it meant we didn't start eating for an hour which we thought was a bit long as there weren't a lot of customers in the restaurant.
I had to leave the castle and find alternative accommodation for the duration of my trip as when I got there at 11 in the morning they refused to check me in untill 3 in the afternoon even though they had asked me in an email the previous day if I would like early check-in which I replied that I would
The whole first day of my weekend away was ruined as I had to find alternative accommodation and I would like a full refund
A lovely warm welcome from all the staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. The room was delightful, roomy and comfortable and the food was delicious.
From the minute I arrived, I had a lovely welcome from Holly !Got into my room and was absolutely delighted with everything
The only thing I didn’t like was there was too many dogs,Passing through the restaurant, thankfully they weren’t around our seating area, sadly my partner isn’t very dog friendly, for health reasons.
Everything..I cannot recommend this place highly enough ..it is absolutely beautiful a lovely piece of history..Immaculately clean , lovely bathrooms , helpful and polite staff
Fantastic old castle with lots of history. The grounds were lovely and the staff was great. Rooms full of character and charm.
Large room with great view of the grounds at the back. Good bed. Games room has a snooker table. Good vegan fry-up with good coffee. Pleasant staff. No. 3 bus can take you into town in 30-40 mins.
