Pros +
- The guys on the front desk are very friendly and helpful. You can ask them anything and they will take time for you. Just what you need in a new city. We booked a double room with own bathroom. Bed was comfortable and bathroom was clean. Great location!
- We arrived in Edinburgh by train and the hostel was a 15 minute walk (uphill) from the station and a 5 minute walk (downhill) back to the station in the morning. It is also right in the centre of the city so lots to do and see on the doorstep. The staff we really friendly and gave great advice about where to eat.
- It as in a fantastic area. We felt safe and were comfortable most of the time.
Cons -
- Edinburgh Backpackers is a great place to stay but I think that some guests forget its a hostel - not a hotel. How can you choose to stay in a hostel dorm and then complain that you share the bathroom and kitchen? This really bothered me!
- The building is a little tired looking and could do with being redecorated and smartened up.
- Very small. The kitchen was badly equipped The kettle had to be filled in your room. Only 3 cups supplied. No sink or water to wash up so you had to do it in your room( toilet). Lots of stairs and very narrow areas

The location
The room was tiny, you can hear some noise from the streets and from the people walking to the other rooms, the lavabo has separate faucets for hot and cold water (!). We needed to pay 3 GBP for each luggage to be stored just for a few hours after the check out.
The showers were really nice in the morning!!! And there were lockers in the room for each bed which was amazing! It was very handy and comforting to see that I could store my things into a locker! And there were sockets for you to charge your phone which was perfect! Not a lot of beds in the room which made me feel more safe and comfortable being in the room! The staff were lovely and informed me where everything was or how to find areas of the hostel! Also getting a 15% discount to the cafe next door was a nice touch! Really enjoyed my breakfast!
There was no bed lighting or curtains around the bed area for privacy. Apart from those things the staff were lovely and direct!
The best position we could think about.Very close to everything, clean and with private bathroom.
Place was basic in its proposal, but we're talking about a hostel, so it's to be expected.A little noisy on Saturday night but that's the downside of being in a very lively and central area (also, complimentary ear plugs are at the entrance)
Location: 5/5 (2 mins walk from Train Station)Staff: 10/5 ? (Very helpful and cool people)Facilities: 5/5 (Free coffee and tea and kitchen access)
No Lift: We were fine but if you have a lot of luggage be prepared to lift some weights
Amazing location and very welcoming staff, we were able to leave our luggage at the reception after check out
No toiletries, very basic bathroom facilities. The room needed a refresh, it was quite old. The heating was not powerful enough for winter in Scotland
I had a whole dorm to myself , the dorm was clean The staff were helpful
The Male Toilets were up two flights of stairs and i couldnt find the male showers
there was one nice girl on staff who was actually caring and considerate
the manager was horrible and refused to help in a locker situation with a guest that put their stuff IN a locker I had already placed a lock on. the man was horrible and threatening and didn’t deserve to be here. the place has nothing to accommodate to hostel guests. the “common rooms” are shut behind doors and hardly have anyone in them. No encouraging events even during holidays to provide social interaction or bonding. toilet paper not stocked well. often vomit scenes
Double charged for room! Beware.
Awful! I was double charged by the property— payment already taken by the Booking app and then asked to pay in person before I realized the payment had already posted. Have not received any reply from the property regarding the problem so I am now out 80 bucks. Booked double room; toilet had flushing problems and room had a weird “damp” smell.
We didn’t hv the breakfast. Room size was ok just that bed not comfy and toilet sink very dirty.
We stayed at the room with toilet. However the sink is dirty and rusty. Room size is good but beds & pillows not comfy. Very noisy other guests goes in & out as our room is right beside the entrance door
Private bedroom was very nice for two. Nice space and shower was perfect. Common room had a nice view and comfy sofa. Very well connected with old town and pretty close to the Castle.
We always had someone available to answer any questions we had. We felt very comfortable there, and the location couldn't be better!
There was a guy snoring like a warthog in the bed next to mine. It must have broken some volume record! From night until morning, truly incredible! The next night I bought some earplugs, but he was gone!
The place was perfectly located right in the centre of Edinburgh so the location literally couldn’t be better. The beds are also all right and the rooms are well heated.
However the price to quality ratio was insane and I don’t think it was worth such amounts of money for a bed in a shared room
Ideal location, Staff is amazing, friendly, supportive and helpful. Value for money. Kitchen facility was available. free coffee and tea. Pool table, TV lounge, good place to meet people. Overall a good experience.
There is no lamp light for each bunk bed, I think that should be better. Lockers are there in the room, but I think they have to mark the lockers with bed numbers. there is no elevator, if you have heavy luggage you have to take it up by self.
Great location! However, the hostel was hacked and didn’t seem to care to let us know! We paid twice for the room and neither Edinburgh Backpackers or Booking.com took responsibility for it.
Unethical
I stayed in a private room across the street rather than a dorm so didn't experience the main hostel
Proximity to Royal MilePleasant staff
Space was too less for a 5 night stay.No bathroom amenities. Not ideal for couplesCranky rooms.Heating was sub par
Amazing location, we have a private room in a 3 bed flat with shared kitchen and bathroom. Everything was clean and well looked after.
Lots of stairs so keep that in mind if you’re taking a suitcase. Waited a while to be. Checked in as the desk was unmanned.
