Cons -
- Bit over priced for what it is, little things like no sugar in the room, coffee machine not working. £20 per head for breakfast on top of room cost a bit excessive, we ate away from hotel in morning.
- £30 for a dog for one night is a little steep and he didn’t have a blanket included. Loved the treat bag but sadly it contained rawhide and colouring which is bad for dogs.

Wow, we loved everything from the wonderful greeting we received when we arrived to seeing our room which was beautiful clean and roomy to the staff who were just wonderful. The breakfast room was gorgeous with lovely high ceilings and lovely furnishings. The location could not be better, the bus stop right outside the hotel took me into Edinburgh whilst my husband went to the races at Musselburgh. It took 10 minutes on the bus and I didn't have to worry about parking my car. The Abacus Restaurant was also very nice, we will definitely be back, loved the free coffee machine in one of the lounges, in such a chilled out area. The breakfast itself was wonderful and great service, the staff at the hotel can not do enough for you, the young man in the bar had so much knowledge on Whiskeys and he was a joy to talk to.
There was nothing I didn't like
Perfect location. 10 min by bus and you are in the city center. 10 min walk and you are hiking at the mountain. Very clean territory, lots of place to walk, if you are coming with your dog.
There was nothing to dislike, it was perfect.
Friendly staff
Location … very strange surroundings. Basically no parking unless on campusRoom very cold
Great room, very comfy beds and the extra amenities were great. To be able to grab fruits, biscuits, tea and (great) coffee whenever you wish is not something I've encountered before and a lovely extra.
It's roughly a 20-25 minute walk to the city centre. Not awful and quite doable if you're able, but not the most central stay.
The Hotel and staff were amazing!
The staff in the restaurant were excellent , however, the food was a total disaster! I really should have told the staff but I am too polite. The steak was cold , the whole thing, roast tomatoes, chips and steak was very bland and not worth the 38 Quid!!! M
Located in a quiet area on the same site as The Pollock Halls, University of Edinburgh student accommodation. It was close to Arthur’s Seat but perhaps a 20 minute walk to the Royal Mile or a short bus ride.
The breakfast was lovely but became a little boring after 2 days. However you do get the opportunity to eat next door at The Scholarship which was very nice and had a buffet so some more options. Our bed mattress was a little soft for my liking but that’s just personal preference.
We stayed in the Gate House room and really enjoyed the space and facilities. The quality of the food at the property is very high. Best of all is the service mentality and culture of the staff. They really care.
Staff were brilliant Property very clean
Evening meal choice very limited, overpriced for what was recieved.Only ate one evening meal, day of arrival after that we had our evening meals out.Breakfast we had to sit in another room away from the dining room, because we had travelled with our dog. Didn't like having to sit round a large table with strangers rather than having smaller tables set up.
A wonderful castle located in a quiet area. You can reach the city center on foot or by bus , the bus stop is right across from the hotel. The interior is very beautiful, at Christmas it feels like a fairytale. The breakfast is delicious and refined.
It was really hard to leave the hotel because of the friendly staff, the amazing food and the overall vibe. Once you enter the 200 year old building, hear the Christmas jazz tunes, see the beautiful furnishings and the greetings from every staff member you meet, you really feel at home. Our stay was exceptional.
The really only thing that we missed was somewhere to hang our jackets closer to the door inside our room. But without that there was nothing we didn’t like about our stay.
A very beautifully decorated old building. The a la carte breakfast was special. The staff was very attentive and caring. We will return with great pleasure.
A beautiful building, very nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Breakfast was good, room very well equipped and bed very comfortable. Arthurs seat nearby and a bus stop just outside with regular buses into the city every 10 minutes.
The staff was incredibly nice and helpful, the house itself is beautiful. We loved the breakfast and the many sweet Christmas decorations. Thank you for the perfect stay!
The only thing that was not perfect was that there was no possibility to take a lunch package instead of the breakfast for our day trip where we had to leave very early. It would have been great to be able to take some bread or something with us. But still, when we asked for it, the staff was very kind and caring
I had an excellent stay at this hotel. The location was perfect—convenient, accessible, and close to everything I needed. The room size was surprisingly spacious and very comfortable, giving me plenty of room to relax. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience feel warm and personal. On top of that, the room was spotless, with great attention to cleanliness.Overall, a wonderful stay—highly recommended!
Little delays when we were ordering stuff to the room.
A wonderful place to explore this equally stunning city. Convenient parking with charging stations for cars. Very polite staff. Delicious food for dinner. Breakfasts are also good. A very pleasant, cozy room that you want to return to after long walks.
Quiet location Beautiful public spacesComfortable bed Lovely bedroom and bathroom Toiletries provided
Dinner menu was not to our taste and very expensive for what you got. Breakfast served on cold plates so food was lukewarm.
Exceptionally courteous and friendly staff. Comfortable beds and bedding.
Rather slow coffee machine at breakfast causing a queue and a bottleneck of guests and staff in the breakfast corridor area.Shower fitting was loose.
