Location & Staff
Close to WCU.
The staff was very nice. This was our fourth stay here. We were dropping our son off at WCU. I did not expect a 4 star but little things should be addressed like room smell, hallway carpet and walls (dirty and marked up).

Great location, and very clean
The location was very convenient and easy to get to. It is in a well lit area and walking distance from the casino.
Location is very close proximity of Casino and other area attractions. Nice outward appearance upon arrival but the smell of interior hallways and musty smell in rooms instantly takes away first impression. Breakfast staff was clean & stocked.

A pleasant and helpful front desk clerk (female).
We had four teenage girls with us and they enjoyed the small, heated indoor pool and the breakfast was perfect. It's right up the road from the entrance to the ski resort. The price was right.

Staff was super friendly and the property was very clean. Nice location. The porch and grill area on the creek was escpecially nice.
The creek running in the back. However you couldn?t keep the windows open due to the larger holes in the screens and insects were flying in.

Such a great family place to stay. We had a great time playing games in the lawn and playing in the creek.
Loved the nostalgia of an old road side motel but with the rooms updated to today's standards. This place was just outside of Maggie Valley so you had a private setting area away from town. The elk behind our room was an extra bonus.

Top Tips
- Reserve your hotel at least 2-3 months in advance for fall foliage (late September-October), summer river and raft season, and Western Carolina University events. Hotels in this small town book up quickly during these high-demand periods.
- Public transit and rideshares are limited in Sylva, so renting a car is recommended for reaching trailheads, rivers, Cherokee (approximately 20-30 minutes by car), and Asheville (approximately 60 minutes by car). Many major hotels offer shuttles to select destinations or events - contact your hotel to confirm shuttle routes, schedules, and if advance booking is required.
- To be near downtown restaurants and shops, choose hotels in Sylva’s Main Street area. For hiking, rafting, or a quieter mountain stay, consider Cullowhee or Dillsboro. Review drive times, as winding mountain roads often take longer than distance alone suggests.
- Use review platforms like TripAdvisor, Google, or Yelp and filter for reviews from the past 6-12 months. Focus on feedback about cleanliness, bed comfort, noise, and Wi-Fi reliability, as these are common points in rural hotels.
- If traveling from November to March, confirm the hotel’s snow, ice, and cancellation policy. Mountain roads may be icy, so rental car chains or 4WD are advisable in snow. Ask the front desk about current road conditions before departing.
- Expect to show government photo ID and a credit card at check-in. Many properties pre-authorize cards for incidental holds. Ask about minimum check-in age, as some hotels require guests to be 21 or older.
- Most Sylva hotels, including leading brands, offer free parking and Wi-Fi. Downtown lots can be small, and pet policies (fees, size limits, deposits) vary - request details when booking. Ask about complimentary breakfast, fitness centers, and guest laundry, as availability and charges differ by property.
- Rural hotels may have limited Wi-Fi bandwidth. If you need strong connections for work or streaming, choose properties advertising business centers or premium Wi-Fi. Higher-tier hotels sometimes offer upgraded speeds for a fee - confirm access at reservation. Bringing a mobile hotspot is a reliable backup for remote areas.
- Mountain valleys around Sylva can have weak cell service with some carriers. Download offline directions, trail maps, and emergency contacts to your device ahead of arrival.
- Pack layered clothing for rapidly changing temperatures, sturdy shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle. In winter, bring tire chains or traction aids if you plan to drive high-elevation mountain roads.
- Ask hotel staff for current trailhead directions, waterfall or river levels, restaurant suggestions, and local safety tips. Local staff often have the most up-to-date area information.
- Tip 15-20% for full-service dining, around $1-2 per bag for bellhops, and $2-5 per day for housekeeping (leave daily). Sylva is a small town where courteous interaction and appropriate tipping are appreciated.
- For families or groups needing kitchens or privacy, cabins and vacation rentals are plentiful around Sylva, Dillsboro, and Cullowhee. Confirm property access, as some have steep private drives, and check heating, AC, and cancellation rules before booking.
- North Carolina state and local occupancy taxes apply to hotel stays (typically 7-10%). If plans might change due to weather or road closures, look for flexible cancellation policies.
- The Sylva area is generally safe. On hikes or near campgrounds, expect wildlife including bears. Store food securely, keep a safe distance from animals, and follow posted park rules. Use standard urban safety habits in town.
- When booking, request accessible room types (step-free entry, visual alarms) or family amenities such as cribs or adjoining rooms. Complimentary breakfast and self-service laundry are standard at many chains, but pool hours and activity offerings may vary seasonally—ask in advance.
- Pick a well-reviewed, centrally located hotel with secure parking and a 24-hour front desk if available. Let someone know your itinerary for hikes and river trips. Consider hotels that can arrange local guides or group activities for social connection.
- If traveling for business, ask about meeting room access, printing, and early check-in or late check-out policies. For quieter stays, request a room away from highways, the lobby, or other busy areas.
- Bring a government-issued photo ID for check-in. Most hotels no longer require COVID vaccination proof, but review their health policies in advance. Store digital copies of your ID and insurance for emergencies, and note urgent care locations in Sylva, plus hospitals in Asheville (about 60 minutes by car) or Cherokee (30 minutes).
- Check the Visit Jackson County or Sylva website or the Jackson County tourism office for seasonal events, farmers markets, festivals, and biking or hiking maps. Regional travel blogs and guidebooks like Lonely Planet’s Western North Carolina/Smokies section offer more lodging tips.
