Top Tips
- Reserve your hotel room at least 2 to 3 months in advance, especially during peak events such as the February snowmobile rallies or summer fishing tournaments, since hotel capacity in Thief River Falls is limited. For major weekends, hotels often reach 80% occupancy. Check for early booking rates directly on the hotel's website.
- Compare properties for key amenities such as hot breakfast, parking (usually free), high-speed Wi-Fi, and guest laundry access. Many hotels offer secure storage for snowmobiles or fishing gear; confirm directly with the front desk to ensure these are available during your dates.
- Check cancellation and flexible booking policies before reserving. Many chain hotels offer full refunds up to 24 hours prior, while independent motels may charge a 1-night penalty. For weather-sensitive trips, select a refundable rate if local conditions could change your plans.
- Plan to drive or rent a car, as public transit and taxis are scarce in Thief River Falls. Most hotels are located 3 to 5 miles (4.8 to 8 km) from regional attractions and Digi-Key's campus. Verify that parking is included—typically free at national chains.
- Expect to present a government-issued photo ID and the card used for booking at check-in. Minnesota state and local lodging tax adds approximately 7 to 10% to the nightly bill. Clarify final costs at booking to avoid surprises.
- Ask hotel front desk staff for specific local dining hours, fishing guide contact information, or trail status updates. Many venues in Thief River Falls close by 21:00, and hotel staff can recommend restaurants or outfitters with the latest hours and availability.
- Pack gear for rapid weather changes. From November to March, lows can reach -25°F (-32°C), requiring insulated coats, hats, and gloves. In summer (June-August), evening temperatures can fall to 50°F (10°C), so bring a warm layer even if daytime highs exceed 80°F (27°C).
- Follow standard US tipping practices: leave $1 to $5 nightly for housekeeping and tip restaurant staff 15 to 20% for satisfactory service. Some hotels provide tip envelopes in guest rooms.
- Grocery stores and restaurants may close by 21:00; after this time, options are limited to vending machines or automated kiosks at select hotels. Pack non-perishable snacks for late arrivals or early morning departures.
- Solo travelers should book hotels within 1 mile (1.6 km) of downtown for walkability and access to key services. If planning off-grid activities, share your itinerary with hotel staff or a contact for added safety.
- Families should request cribs or connecting suites at booking. Brands like AmericInn and Holiday Inn Express typically offer these upon request. Ask about indoor pools and nearby parks such as the Northland Arboretum for family-friendly activities.
- Business travelers should confirm business center hours, Wi-Fi bandwidth (most chains offer 10-50 Mbps), and proximity to Digi-Key (2 miles/3.2 km). If needed, ask whether shuttle service is scheduled or on-demand.
- Outdoor travelers can request secure trailer parking or locked gear storage. Properties such as GrandStay and local motels provide these for snowmobile or fishing gear. Verify policy and availability before arrival, especially during tournament weekends.
- Respect posted quiet hours (typically 22:00 to 08:00) to align with Minnesota lodging regulations. Excessive noise may result in fines or eviction according to hotel policy.
- Store valuables in your room safe or vehicle if no room safe is available. Thief River Falls hotels are generally secure, but for items over $500, request the main desk safe or clarify the hotel's liability limit. Keep key emergency numbers handy; advanced medical facilities are 55 miles (89 km) south in Grand Forks.
