Top Tips
- Book your hotel room at least 3 to 6 months in advance for the annual EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in late July. Hotels fill rapidly and rates increase during this international event. Monitor hotel rates for fluctuations and confirm cancellation policies, as demand can affect refund windows.
- Confirm complimentary airport shuttle services with hotels near Wittman Regional Airport (OSH). Many properties, including the Best Western Premier or Hampton Inn, are within a 5-10 minute drive and offer this service. Double-check shuttle hours and ask if accessible transport is available.
- Rent a car for flexibility in Oshkosh, as public transit (GO Transit) has limited hours, with service ending by 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 5:00 p.m. Saturdays. Rideshare services like Uber are available but may have 20+ minute wait times during major events. Confirm if your hotel offers on-site parking and check for any daily fees.
- Prioritize hotel location based on your trip's purpose. Airport proximity allows for quick arrival and departure, while downtown or waterfront hotels offer better access to dining, entertainment, and Lake Winnebago, typically 5-8 minutes by car. Ask about parking or shuttle options to reach city highlights efficiently.
- Verify Wi-Fi reliability and business amenities, especially if traveling for work. Free Wi-Fi often ranges from 5-15 Mbps; premium Wi-Fi can reach up to 50 Mbps for $15 per day. Confirm if meeting rooms are accessible and reservable in advance.
- Flexible rates often permit cancellation 24-72 hours before arrival, but stricter policies are common during event weeks. Check your booking’s refund window and consider signing up for hotel alerts or price drops if available.
- Review pet and smoking policies before booking. Some Oshkosh hotels permit dogs up to 50 lbs for a $15-$50 nightly fee, with most hotels non-smoking and fines up to $250 for violations. Ask if there are pet relief areas or hypoallergenic room options.
- Negotiate early check-in or late check-out at least 24 hours prior to arrival; fees may apply on busier dates. For a quieter stay, request a room at least two doors from elevators or ice machines.
- Tip hotel staff appropriately: $1-$2 per bag for bellhops and $2-$5 per night for housekeeping (leave daily). Standard U.S. restaurant gratuity is 15%-20%. Tipping in cash is preferred where possible.
- Expect 10%-15% Wisconsin and local lodging taxes added to your nightly rate. Some properties also charge facility fees of $15-$25 per night. Compare final prices before booking and ask for an itemized receipt at checkout.
- Prepare for seasonal weather variability. Summers reach 80°F (27°C) with humid conditions; bring sunblock and bug spray. Winters can fall below 20°F (-6°C), so confirm hotel heating and snow removal in parking areas. Ask if hotels offer umbrellas or gear rental for guests.
- Ask hotel staff for local recommendations. The front desk or concierge can suggest restaurants, breweries like Fox River Brewing (2 miles east), boat rentals, or UW Oshkosh campus sights. Check if your hotel provides a printed or digital guide of recommended venues.
- Plan for families by requesting cribs, connecting rooms, or kitchenettes in advance, especially before summer peak. Many hotels offer free breakfast and indoor pools. Ask if on-site laundry facilities are coin-operated or complimentary.
- Solo travelers should request a room on a lower floor near a well-lit exit for security and consider a portable door lock. Ask the front desk about safe walking routes after dark, and see if the hotel can provide a security escort to your vehicle.
- Business travelers should request itemized receipts for expense reports at check-in. Reserve a room close to meeting facilities and inquire about early or boxed breakfast options for morning meetings. Ask if in-room safes are laptop-sized for device security.
- Request ADA accessible rooms well in advance if needed. Call ahead to confirm features such as roll-in showers, grab bars, and visual alarms, and ask if accessible parking, step-free entrances, or service animal accommodations are available.
- During large events like AirVenture, keep both printed and digital booking confirmations ready, as road closures and altered shuttle stops are common. Review pre-arrival instructions from your hotel and use a traffic app for live reroute alerts.
