Top Tips
- Book accommodations at least 1-3 months in advance for stays from November to April, as demand is high and prices can rise up to 30% along Seven Mile Beach during peak season. Early booking for hotels like the Westin or Kimpton Seafire ensures better selection and access to premium beachfront rooms.
- Expect a 13% government hotel occupancy tax on all room rates, plus resort fees that vary by property. Confirm total nightly costs, including taxes and fees, before booking to avoid surprises during checkout.
- Arrange airport transfers through your hotel or a licensed service to guarantee a set fare from Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM); typical taxi rates to Seven Mile Beach range from CI$18-25 (US$22-31). Check with your hotel if they offer direct shuttle service.
- Most major hotels offer concierge services to help you book excursions, schedule Stingray City tours, or reserve tables at busy venues like Blue by Eric Ripert. Ask your concierge for operator details and reservation lead times, especially during major events.
- Add 15-20% for hotel staff tips and restaurant bills, though some venues automatically include a service charge (often 15%). Check your bill so you only tip the additional amount when needed.
- The Cayman Islands Dollar (CI$) is official, but US Dollars are accepted nearly everywhere at the fixed rate of US$1 = CI$0.80. Many hotel menus and bills quote both currencies - verify which one applies before paying.
- When snorkeling or diving, keep at least 2 meters (6 feet) from coral or marine life as touching is prohibited to protect the ecosystem. Choose reef-safe sunscreen (zinc oxide, non-nano) as required by most eco-friendly hotels and operators.
- Ask about hotel-provided water sports. Hilton, Marriott, and other major hotels on Seven Mile Beach typically include complimentary kayaks or paddleboards. Some properties offer daily group classes or kids’ clinics - confirm availability and any time restrictions.
- Nearly all hotels offer Wi-Fi, but check if it’s included in the resort fee or charged separately; daily rates can reach CI$15-20 (US$19-25) at some properties. Power outlets use Type A/B, 110V, so US/Canadian devices don’t need adapters.
- For families, prioritize accommodations with kids’ clubs, pools with lifeguards, and certified babysitting. These are available at the Ritz-Carlton, Kimpton Seafire, and similar properties - confirm age limits and any additional costs when booking.
- Light, breathable clothing is ideal for Grand Cayman’s year-round temperatures of 24 to 32°C (75 to 90°F). Finer restaurants and clubs on West Bay Road may require collared shirts or dresses after 18:00 - check specific dress codes in advance.
- Stay hydrated in the Caribbean sun; tap water is treated and safe to drink in Grand Cayman. Use refillable water bottles (widely accepted in 4-star hotels) and take breaks indoors or in shaded areas to lower the risk of heat exhaustion.
- If exploring beyond the 8 km stretch of Seven Mile Beach, rent a car as driving is on the left, and day rentals average CI$45-70 (US$56-88). For short trips, hotel shuttle buses or official taxis are widely available; always confirm pickup points and schedules.
- Hurricane season runs June-November. Select hotels with flexible cancellation or hurricane guarantees, such as Marriott’s promise to waive penalties for direct impacts. Review policies before booking or add travel insurance with weather coverage.
- Keep valuables, including passports, backup cards, and electronics, in your in-room safe, and check that doors and locks are secure. Most hotels provide 24/7 front desk and nighttime lighting; request additional security details at check-in if needed.
