Top Tips
- Book hotels 45-60 days before ArtPrize (late September to early October) to avoid 35-50% price surges, as occupancy often exceeds 90% during this period. For flexible travel plans, prioritize chains like Marriott or Hilton, which often allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before arrival; verify policy during booking.
- Choose hotels on Monroe Avenue for 15-20% lower rates, averaging $135-$175 USD per night, compared to Pearl Street's $160-$210 USD, while maintaining a high walk score of 82-88 to downtown attractions. Monroe Avenue properties are close to DeVos Place and public art installations along this corridor.
- Verify if your quoted rate includes the full 13% lodging tax (6% Kent County, 3% Grand Rapids city, 4% state), as this can add $15-$26 USD per night to a $100-$200 USD stay and may not be itemized on all online travel agencies. For international guests, tax is usually not included in quoted rates from third-party sites; always check the final price at checkout.
- Explicitly request step-free access, as only an estimated 12-14% of downtown hotels, like the Amway Grand Plaza or JW Marriott, display verified ADA-compliant rooms online; always call to confirm features such as roll-in showers, elevator access, visual alert features, or accessible bathroom layouts to match your needs.
- Use local bank ATMs, such as U.S. Bank or Huntington, to withdraw cash and cap fees at $2.50-$3.00 USD, avoiding dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fees at hotels, which can add 3-7% in hidden charges. Use ATMs located inside banks or hotel lobbies for added security.
- Prioritize hotels advertising 100+ Mbps Wi-Fi if working remotely; the median download speed for business hotels downtown is 65 Mbps, but properties like the Kimpton Amway Hotel offer over 120 Mbps with fiber connections. Contact the hotel to confirm current speeds, as public Wi-Fi quality can fluctuate during peak occupancy.
- Avoid ride-share surge pricing during Van Andel Arena events by selecting hotels within a 0.5-mile radius, such as the JW Marriott (0.4 miles), which have a walk score of 90+ and eliminate transport costs for events. Many hotels in this area also offer direct access to the Skywalk, providing covered routes to Van Andel Arena and nearby dining.
- Decline daily housekeeping during summer months (June-August) to support local water conservation; hotels participating in city sustainability programs, like the LEED-certified Amway Grand Plaza, can reduce linen washing by 30%. Ask your hotel if they participate in Grand Rapids' Green Lodging Initiative when checking in.
- Consider tipping housekeeping $2-$5 USD per day in cash; while not universally required, 70% of guests at 4-star+ hotels in Grand Rapids now leave daily tips, with envelopes provided at properties like the Kimpton and JW Marriott. If paying with a card, ask if you can add a daily tip at the front desk to ensure housekeeping receives it.
- Select hotels with backup generators, as downtown Grand Rapids faces a 25% higher risk of power outages during the May-July thunderstorm season, with properties like the Amway Grand Plaza listing on-site generators for critical systems. If you rely on medical devices, notify the hotel ahead of your stay and confirm backup power arrangements.
- Be aware that Grand Rapids tap water, sourced from the Mississippi River, meets EPA standards but contains chloramine; sensitive individuals may prefer filtered or bottled water, which is available at all hotels. Filtered water dispensers are often available in hotel fitness centers or lounges; ask the front desk for locations.
- Stack AAA/CAA or AARP discounts for 5-10% savings at chain hotels like Marriott, Hilton, and Choice properties; these discounts often require phone booking or ID verification at check-in and are rarely applied via online travel agencies. For international travelers, AAA/CAA and AARP eligibility requires membership and ID; otherwise, look for publicly available advance purchase rates.
