Top Tips
- Expect a 10% hotel service charge and 7% VAT on most Chiang Mai hotel bookings, increasing the total by about 17% unless your agency shows all-in pricing. Check your reservation breakdown to understand the final cost.
- Rates in Chiang Mai can surge 20-50% during Yi Peng/Loy Krathong (mid-November) and December-January peak season. Book 6-10 weeks in advance for better availability and pricing.
- Chiang Mai Airport is 6-8 km (about a 10-20 minute drive) from the Old City. Use the official taxi counter (meter fare plus 50 THB) or Grab app rides (120-250 THB, approx. $3.50-$7.25) for clear pricing and receipts.
- Thai ATMs usually charge a 220 THB (approx. $6.25) fee for foreign cards per withdrawal. To minimize costs, withdraw larger amounts at once or check if your hotel offers cash advances for guests.
- When paying by card, select payment in Thai baht (THB) rather than your home currency to avoid 2-8% Dynamic Currency Conversion fees. This is common at Chiang Mai hotels and shops.
- Hotel Wi-Fi in Chiang Mai usually ranges from 20-80 Mbps. For stronger connections, consider day passes at co-working spaces such as Punspace or CAMP in Nimmanhaemin (50-200+ Mbps, 150-400 THB per day, approx. $4.25-$11.50).
- Step-free access in Old City Lanna guesthouses is limited; many have stairs only and no elevators. If you need an accessible room, request a ground-floor or certified accessible room when booking.
- Saturday Night Market (Wualai Rd) and Sunday Night Market (Ratchadamnoen Rd) run from 17:00-23:00. For quieter nights, request rooms away from street level or stay outside the market area during these times.
- Hotels often require a refundable hold of 500-2,000 THB (approx. $15-$57.50) at check-in for extras or damages. Bring a credit card or cash deposit as suits your preference.
- Do not drink tap water in Chiang Mai; hotels provide bottled water daily, with some offering filtered refill stations. Check with the front desk for sustainable hydration options.
- Where a 10% service charge is listed on your bill, additional tipping is optional. When no service charge applies, customary tips are 20-50 THB (approx. $0.50-$1.50) for bellhops or housekeeping, and about 10% in restaurants.
- Nimmanhaemin-area hotels typically cost 15-35% more than similar Old City properties, with more nearby cafés, coworking, and nightlife. The Old City offers easy temple access and lower prices.
