The room, the breakfast, and closeness to the Mall
The condition and cleanliness of rooms are very poor. My room had open drain smell which the never fixed it after 5 times complaining. Service is very poor

Pros: nice, large functional rooms (family rooms had an extra half bath). Food was very good even though a bit repetitive. The public areas were beautiful and clean. Entertainment team was great. Lots of activities. Plenty of shuttles into town.

Top Tips
- Choose your neighborhood by function. Medina offers short-stay advantages with walking access to Jemaa el-Fnaa (under 600 m from many riads), while Gueliz or Hivernage provide car and taxi access, large hotels, and reliable amenities. For easier transfers and baggage, prioritize hotels in Gueliz or Hivernage, especially for business or quiet workspace needs.
- Expect stairs in many Medina riads; over half lack elevators. Request a ground-floor ('rez-de-chaussée') or accessible room if mobility or heavy baggage is a concern. Major hotel chains in Gueliz and Hivernage offer step-free and accessible options; confirm room type before booking.
- You must present your passport at check-in. Moroccan law requires in-person passport registration for all hotels and riads. Digital images or photocopies are not accepted, so keep your physical passport ready for fast processing.
- Carry Moroccan dirham (MAD) cash, especially in 20-200 MAD notes. Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC): pay in MAD to prevent a 2-6% loss if card terminals offer EUR or USD. Souk vendors and small riads often accept cash only, while chains in Gueliz or Hivernage accept cards but may request small bills for tipping.
- Budget for a nightly 'taxe de séjour' (tourist tax), which varies by property class and is often not included in online rates. The typical range is 11-41 MAD per night. Confirm the fee with your hotel so you are prepared at checkout.
- Menara Airport is 6 km (3.7 mi) southwest of the Medina, about 10-20 minutes by car in normal traffic. Prebook a private hotel transfer or ask for an official orange taxi with meter. Medina hotels may require a 1-10 minute walk with luggage from the taxi drop-off due to car-free narrow streets.
- Nightly rates rise 20-50% during peak events such as December's film festival and New Year. Book 8-12 weeks in advance for these periods instead of the 3-6 week window common in off-peak months to secure lower rates at chain hotels and riads.
- Tipping is customary: porters receive 10-30 MAD per bag (approx. $1 to $3 USD), housekeeping 10-20 MAD nightly (approx. $1 to $2 USD), and restaurants 5-10% if service is not included on the bill. Tip in MAD cash for smoother service. Check if gratuities are included, as many hotels in Gueliz and Hivernage list this clearly.
- Expect variable Wi-Fi in Medina riads, where courtyard layouts can limit speed and coverage. For reliable high-speed Wi-Fi and a desk, book a chain hotel in Gueliz or Hivernage that lists 'business centre' or has verified bandwidth ratings. Check user reviews or property listings prior to booking if remote work is essential.
- Avoid drinking tap water; use sealed bottled water or hotel-provided filtered bottles to prevent gastrointestinal upset. International hotel chains generally provide complimentary bottles and can handle food allergies safely—notify them of dietary needs before arrival.
- If you are sensitive to noise, request an inward-facing or courtyard room, especially in Hivernage where clubs and late-night venues are located. Gueliz and Palmeraie neighborhoods offer quieter alternatives, and major hotels provide soundproofed room options. Verify room features before booking.
- Unsolicited guides and shop invitations are common in the Medina. Decline or confirm any guide or shop through your hotel's concierge. For excursions, book directly with your hotel or use their recommended partners to avoid overcharging and sales pressure prevalent in tourist areas.
