Top Tips
- Book 4-8 weeks ahead for weekend stays during late November and early December, as hotels near Sawgrass Mills, one of the largest outlet centers in the U.S., fill early and there are fewer last-minute deals.
- Check the Florida Panthers schedule or major concerts at Amerant Bank Arena before booking. Arena event nights can increase room rates and affect late-night street activity, so confirm shuttle and event parking details with the hotel by phone or app before your stay.
- Confirm your hotel’s hurricane cancellation policy for stays between June 1 and November 30. This is hurricane season and storms can cause rapid disruptions.
- Expect to travel mostly by car in Sunrise. The drive from FLL airport is 20-30 minutes off-peak and 30-50+ minutes during rush hour or events, as public transit is limited. Top hotel chains like Hilton, Marriott, and IHG may offer scheduled shuttles or partner with ride-hailing services for a modest fee; ask about frequency, especially during high-traffic periods. For a quieter stay, request a room away from elevators or common spaces.
- Ask about parking and incidental credit card holds before arrival. Some hotels advertise free self-parking but may apply a hold, typically $50-$200 USD, so request the policy in writing.
- Prefer weekday (Monday-Thursday) stays for quieter rooms and lower mall traffic. Sawgrass Mills and nearby retail generate the highest activity Friday-Sunday daytime. Ask about shuttle or ride-share partnerships, and request a room away from elevators or common spaces for reduced noise.
- Factor in summer weather from June to September, which brings high temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms. Schedule outdoor plans for mornings and confirm hotel A/C performance; check user reviews or ask staff about recent climate system upgrades.
- For quieter stays and better daytime Wi-Fi, choose Monday-Thursday nights outside major shopping or arena event dates. Hotels may offer shuttles or ride-share services on high-traffic nights, and requesting a room away from common spaces can further reduce noise.
- When attending arena events, ask the hotel about late-night access, designated event parking, and quiet-room placement, especially rooms facing away from main roads. Joining the hotel's loyalty program can help you secure priority event services.
- Budget for mandatory local taxes and occupancy fees totaling 11-13% on top of base rates in Broward County. This typically adds $11-$13 USD to a $100 USD nightly rate. Major chains may also add a resort or facility fee; confirm whether this applies at booking.
- Prioritize hotels within 1-2 miles of Sawgrass Mills for a 20% lower crime rate compared to the city average. This area also offers walkable dining.
- For hurricane season (June-November), verify if hotels have on-site generators, as power outages in Broward County average 1-3 days. Monitor updates from trusted local sources like Broward.org or cityofsunrise.org in addition to hotel communications, and note that generators may only support basic services like lighting, elevator, or minimal A/C.
- Specify needs for step-free rooms or accessible features 7-10 days in advance. About 80% of hotels meet step-free standards, but requesting ramps, elevators, visual alarms, or TTY devices ensures access. Confirm elevator access for all floors in older or boutique properties.
- You can help reduce water use up to 30% by opting for Florida Green Lodging certified hotels and declining daily linen service. This is especially important during South Florida's dry season and leads to cost and environmental savings.
- Use bank ATMs to avoid extra fees; non-bank machines in Sunrise charge $3-$5 USD per withdrawal, while Wells Fargo ATMs are generally fee-free for all cardholders. Ask the front desk if the hotel partners with a bank for surcharge-free ATM withdrawals.
- Request A/C units with dehumidifier functions for summer stays (June-August), as Sunrise averages 80-95% humidity and inadequate cooling can disrupt sleep in 60% of budget hotels. Check user reviews or ask hotel staff about recent A/C upgrades at the property.
- Book hotels 4-6 weeks ahead for 15-25% lower rates during peak season (January-April). Mid-tier chains typically cost $140-$180 USD per night versus over $200 USD for last-minute stays. Confirm if resort or facility fees apply at booking.
- Prioritize hotels along State Road A1A for 8-10 minute drives to beach access points and I-595. This reduces congestion compared to inland areas.
- Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at hotel front desks and pay in USD with credit cards that waive foreign transaction fees to avoid 3-5% in hidden charges.
- Request step-free rooms with roll-in showers at major chains like Hilton or IHG at booking and confirm 72 hours prior. Only 4-8% of units typically meet full ADA roll-in shower standards, but visual alarms and TTY devices are also available at most brands. Verify elevator access for all floors.
- Expect 85-120 Mbps Wi-Fi in chain hotels, but speeds can drop 40-60% after 9 PM due to guest usage. Consider co-working spaces for stable daytime upload speeds, and ask about shuttle frequency or ride-share partnerships for better connectivity options.
- Decline daily housekeeping to reduce environmental impact, especially during the dry season (November-May). Hotels can save 1.2 kg CO2 and 80 liters of water per room per night, translating to cost and resource savings when you opt out of daily linen service.
- Use off-site bank ATMs, such as Wells Fargo on Pine Island Road, to avoid $3-$5 USD surcharges common at on-site hotel machines; bank ATMs typically charge $2.50 USD. Ask the front desk if there are fee-free ATM options available for guests.
- Verify if your hotel offers a free shuttle to BB&T Center during game or concert dates. About 60% of hotels within 2 miles provide this service, while others charge $12-$15 USD round-trip. Request shuttle schedules and event parking details by phone or app before event day, as these services may fill quickly on peak nights. Joining the hotel's loyalty program can help with priority access.
- Carry reusable containers if sensitive to chloramines in tap water; Sunrise municipal water uses chloramine disinfection, which can cause odor or aftertaste. Bottled or filtered water is usually available from hotel lobby shops or vending machines if tap water taste is a concern.
- Tip housekeeping $2-$5 USD per day in cash with a thank you note; this South Florida industry standard can ensure consistent service. Tipping is customary but not obligatory; many hotels provide branded envelopes or cards to recognize staff.
- Monitor hurricane season advisories (June-November) for potential rate freezes or refunds; Florida law prohibits price gouging, capping rates at 25% above pre-storm prices during declared emergencies. Use trusted sources like Broward.org or cityofsunrise.org in addition to hotel updates, and note that some hotels with generators may only provide basic lighting and elevator service.
