To be honest, our favourite thing about our stay was Mr Kim Chi the shuttle bus driver. He was the only staff member with any sort of character. But a close second was the view.

Top Tips
- Secure up to 25-35% lower rates by booking beachfront hotels in Phuket 6-8 weeks in advance of peak season (November-February). Early booking supports more choices and lower prepayment requirements, especially with major chains. To track price changes, set up a fare alert or recheck rates closer to your trip.
- Expect a mandatory 7% VAT and a common 10% service charge on hotel bills, with many beach hotels applying a separate resort fee of 300-800 THB (approx. $8-$22 USD) per night. Request a full, itemized total with your reservation confirmation to avoid surprises.
- Prebook a direct airport transfer to Patong for 600-900 THB (approx. $15-$22 USD), saving up to 30% compared to onsite taxis that can reach 800-1,200 THB (up to $33 USD) during heavy traffic periods. For late-night arrivals, verify 24/7 operator availability with your hotel.
- Take timestamped photos or short video of jet ski or boat rentals, noting the fuel gauge and hull condition, before use. Insist on a written contract or receipt: this documentation helps avoid damage disputes, which are common in beach areas.
- Families preferring quieter surroundings benefit from Kamala, which reports 10-15% lower crime rates than Patong and less nightlife congestion. For nightlife access, Patong remains the main hub but has higher incident rates—review local police postings for current information.
- Always select payment in Thai baht (THB) at hotel card terminals or ATMs to avoid 3-5% Dynamic Currency Conversion markups. Thai ATMs typically charge about 220 THB (approx. $6 USD) per withdrawal for foreign cards, so consider making larger, less frequent withdrawals to minimize fees.
- Scooter rentals often require a deposit of 3,000-10,000 THB (approx. $82-$275 USD) and come with significant financial and legal risks. Any medical bills after accidents are usually billed to the renter. Consider comprehensive travel insurance before operating a vehicle.
- Do not drink tap water. Hotels provide complimentary bottled water daily or offer a filtered water station on request to reduce single-use plastic. If unsure about the refill point, ask the front desk upon arrival.
- Test in-room Wi-Fi speed on arrival to ensure suitability for video calls, as many midrange hotels in Phuket report inconsistent connections. For critical work or remote meetings, a local 4G/5G SIM with 50 GB data (about 300 THB, approx. $8.50 USD) offers a stable backup.
- Many beachfront hotels reduce services or close pools and restaurants for maintenance during the monsoon/low season (May-October). Confirm amenity opening hours and any renovation periods directly with the property before booking.
- For accessible stays, confirm step-free access in writing, since 78% of hotels with accessible rooms in Phuket still have step entries or unreliable elevators. Check directly with the property for floor-level pool access and roll-in showers.
- Tip housekeeping 20 THB (approx. $0.55 USD) daily, left in an envelope in your room, since service charges often do not reach individual staff. Confirm local tipping practices with your hotel brand or front desk staff.
