Top Tips
- Book Seoul hotels 45-60 days before your stay to access rates that are 18-25% lower during the March-May and September-November high seasons. Early-bird discounts are especially common in Gangnam and Hongdae.
- A 10% VAT and 10% service charge are applied to most hotel bills in Seoul, increasing your total by about 21%. Always confirm the 'total inclusive rate' during booking to avoid unexpected charges.
- For step-free access, select newer hotels in Seocho or Mapo, where 78% and 68% respectively have elevators. Only 32% of Seoul hotels under six floors offer elevators, so verify elevator or ramp access before booking.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at check-in and pay in Korean Won (KRW) to avoid 3-5% extra fees. Shinhan and Hana Bank ATMs typically charge under 1,000 KRW for foreign card withdrawals and display fees clearly.
- Choose business hotels in Yeouido or Gangnam for fast Wi-Fi (average 115 Mbps) and enforced quiet hours from 10 PM to 7 AM. These districts cater to remote workers with reliable high-speed internet.
- Pack a refillable water bottle since Seoul’s tap water is safe, but hotels often charge 2,500-3,500 KRW (approx. $1.80-$2.50 USD) per 500 ml bottled water. Ask for 'jungsoosu' (filtered tap water) at the front desk for access to free dispensers in most larger hotels.
- Use onsite or neighborhood coin laundromats for laundry at 4,000-5,000 KRW (approx. $2.90-$3.60 USD) per load. Hotel laundry services average 12,000-18,000 KRW (approx. $8.70-$13 USD) per load, so you can save up to 70%.
- If staying between October and March, confirm your room rate includes heating, as some guesthouses add a 5,000-8,000 KRW (approx. $3.60-$5.80 USD) nightly charge for electric heating. Look for 'ondol included' in the booking details and ask if you need underfloor heating.
- For hotel navigation, use KakaoMap instead of Google Maps. KakaoMap covers 38% more addresses, provides real-time indoor layouts in areas like Jongno-gu, and should be downloaded in advance for easier access once in-country.
- Gangnam hotels offer airport limousine buses to both terminals from midnight to 5:00 AM, with rides of 14-18 minutes. This option is 15-20% less expensive than airport city hotels and avoids an extra transfer.
- Request a non-smoking room ('jeomyeonbang') in writing, since 35% of mid-tier Seoul hotels maintain separate smoking floors despite public bans. Confirm at booking to prevent confusion at check-in.
- To minimize delays during winter storms, choose a hotel in Yongsan or Seoul Station districts for direct KTX train access. KTX trains maintain 95% on-time departures in snow, providing reliable transport if flights are disrupted.
