The G Hotel Thumbnail
The G Hotel
Galway, Old Dublin Road
G, You Look Good to Me! An outstanding style icon on the west of Ireland hotel scene, Galway’s g Hotel has upped the style stakes even further in a dramatic one-million-euro refurbishment of its spacious foyer, signature lounges and opulent restaurant and cocktail bar. Under the direction of Leonardo Hotel Group Ireland, the five-star luxury destination on the edge of Lough Atalia has assumed a refreshing new look, distinguished by originality and the very distinct individual personas of its ground-floor spaces. Since first opening in 2005 with the pomp and ceremony surrounding its signature designer, Phillip Tracey, the g Hotel has always been a go-to place for those with an interest in fashion and design. While never shying away from standing out from the crowd the g’s use of dark and light, bold colors, large scale reflective lighting and mirrors, brash artwork and imagery nodding to the Supermodels of the day, all added up to an iconic brand that strives to never be ordinary. The Grand Salon known for its natural light, generous double height ceilings, views over Lough Atalia and the much photographed bespoke mirrored lighting installation by lighting designer Tom Dixon. The design team from GW Design wanted to maintain the chic and elegant atmosphere of the grand salon and for the room to have a feeling of subtle sophistication. A new jewel like cocktail bar, with a dramatic mirrored back bar display reflects the view of the Lough and the lighting installation. A palette of luxurious leathers and textured fabrics, in soft taupes, grays with hints of plums, create a warm and relaxing backdrop to enjoy afternoon tea or a pre-dinner drink. The G Hotel's restaurant, GEO opens out onto a new garden terrace completing the fresh botanical feel of the decor. A cocktail bar anchors the open plan room, where the walls are lined with a paradise scene of blossom with ferns, palms and leaves - a true eye catcher for guests visiting. Statement chandeliers and smoked mirrors draw the eye through the restaurant with a subtle sparkle and a palette of olive greens, and accents of coral and an abundance of greenery complete the new theme of GEO. The Hotel’s two other Signature Lounges evoke glamor and luxury but with a more subtle hint. The Pink Room evokes class and intrigue with blush pink velvets, tasseled chairs and brass accents create a luxurious feel. In contrast is the Blue Room with its color palette of ginger, charcoal, and rich timber. A texture palette of leathers, timber and fabric wall paneling make this an inviting lounge to linger in. Our Thermal Suite area should be a part of your spa journey. Please note that numbers are limited to preserve the spa experience for all guests. All treatments and Thermal Therapy must be booked In advance of arrival. Residents €25.

The G Hotel Thumbnail

The G Hotel

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the typical check-in and check-out times at Galway hotels, and how flexible are late or early arrivals?

Most Galway hotels set check-in at 15:00 (3:00 PM) and check-out at 11:00 AM. Staff are known for a warm Irish welcome, often greeting guests with 'Fáilte' or 'Welcome.' Late check-in is usually accommodated if you notify the property in advance. Early check-in is less common and can carry a partial-day fee or require booking the night before. Luggage storage is widely offered if your room is not yet ready. Plan to arrive around 15:00, or confirm early or late arrangements in advance.

What taxes or mandatory fees should I expect on a Galway hotel bill?

Accommodation in Galway includes Irish national Value-Added Tax (VAT) in the overall bill. There is no city or municipal 'bed tax' in Galway. VAT percentages can change, so consult Revenue.ie for the latest rate. Expect VAT to appear on your invoice, with no additional Galway tourist tax.

How much do nightly hotel rates move with season and events (off- vs. peak) in Galway?

Galway hotel rates often rise by 50% to 150% between deep winter (November-February) and peak summer (June-August), depending on hotel class. Major events like the Galway Races and Galway International Arts Festival in late July drive occupancy to nearly 100% and cause steep rate spikes. Book well in advance for late July, and expect much higher prices compared to January or February.

How do Galway neighborhoods compare for hotel choice (city centre vs. Salthill vs. suburbs)?

Eyre Square (city centre) has the main concentration of hotels. Salthill Promenade is around 2.5 km (1.5 mi) west of Eyre Square, a 30–35 minute walk or 8–12 minute drive. City buses link Salthill and the city centre with daytime frequencies of 10–20 minutes. Staying in the centre keeps you close to restaurants and shops and generally means higher rates. Salthill is quieter at night and offers seaside hotels, but getting to city nightlife or transport hubs usually takes a 10–15 minute drive.

Is Galway suitable for remote work from hotels (Wi-Fi, power outlets, coworking options)?

Galway has a tech and innovation hub and venues like Portershed for coworking. Coworking spaces typically open 09:00–17:30, and day passes in Ireland cost around $15 to $25 USD (€14 to €23, approx.). Large hotels advertise business facilities, though no citywide median hotel Wi-Fi speed is published. Use coworking spaces for guaranteed desks and meeting rooms, and verify hotel bandwidth before booking important meetings.

What are payment and currency norms for Galway hotels (cards, deposits, DCC)?

The local currency is the Euro (EUR). Major debit and credit cards, as well as contactless payments ('tap'), are widely accepted, and small purchases are often paid by tap. Cash acceptance is declining but still available. Hotels frequently use credit card pre-authorization for deposits or incidentals; check your booking confirmation for details. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), which allows you to pay in a non-EUR currency, may be offered but typically includes a markup. Financial advisors recommend paying in EUR to avoid extra fees. Bring an EU-compatible or no-foreign-transaction-fee card, expect card pre-authorizations, and decline DCC if offered.

Are there any Galway-specific accessibility or building-age constraints to expect when choosing hotels?

Many central Galway hotels are in older or historic buildings, and not all may meet modern accessibility standards for step-free access or lifts. Larger modern hotels often have accessible or step-free rooms and elevators. Irish law requires minimum accessibility standards for new or renovated hotels. Service animals are recognized and welcomed in Ireland. If you need step-free access or a roll-in shower, confirm the room and building features directly with the property in writing before booking.

Top Tips

  • Book your Galway hotel 3-5 months before the peak season (June-August) to secure rates up to 20% lower. Late bookings during this period can cost 40-60% more. Compare rates across major hotel chains for the best value.
  • Accommodation in Ireland includes a 13.5% Value Added Tax (VAT), but not all prices show this. Always confirm whether quoted rates are net or VAT-inclusive when booking, especially with international chains.
  • Hotels in Salthill offer quieter stays with direct coastal access, while the Latin Quarter has central pubs and restaurants. Both areas are walkable and can reduce taxi costs, which typically range from €10-€15 per trip (approx. $11-$16 USD). Choose based on your preferred experience.
  • Wi-Fi speeds in modern Galway hotels typically range from 50-150 Mbps, supporting video calls and streaming. Check recent guest reviews for Wi-Fi consistency, especially in older or budget chains.
  • Shower water pressure varies in historic Galway buildings. If this is a priority, verify with the hotel directly or review recent guest feedback before booking, especially at boutique or converted properties.
  • Ireland uses Type G (three rectangular pin) electrical outlets, 230V/50Hz. Bring a universal adapter, as even upscale hotels may only offer limited USB ports.
  • Galway taxis typically cost €10-€15 per city trip (approx. $11-$16 USD). Always agree on the fare up front or request the meter. Unmarked taxis often charge 15-25% more - request official vehicles for fare transparency.
  • Family-run B&Bs in Galway can offer a more personal stay, often at rates 10-15% lower than comparable city hotels and usually include breakfast (saving you approx. €10-€15, or $11-$16 USD). Ask if breakfast is included, as this is standard at many B&Bs.
  • Step-free access is limited in many historic central hotels. Confirm lift or ramp availability before booking if you require accessible rooms or step-free movement around the property.
  • Galway’s tap water meets national safety standards. Use a refillable bottle to avoid buying bottled water, which helps reduce single-use plastic waste.
