Top Tips
- Daytime highs in Madrid average 32–36°C from July to August; many budget pensions and central boutique hotels may lack reliable air-conditioning. Confirm cooling options before booking, especially if traveling with children, seniors, or during heatwaves.
- Madrid hotel prices include a 10% VAT, and no regional tourist tax is applied. Expect your final invoice to match the online booking total, unless you opt for extras like breakfast or parking. For business travelers, VAT is itemized for reimbursement.
- Hotels in Salamanca and Retiro average 20–50% higher rates than those in Centro, but offer quieter mornings and direct access to Retiro Park. Expect 1–2 km (0.6–1.2 mi) walks to major museums.
- Many boutique Madrid hotels are in 19th- and early 20th-century buildings and have narrow lifts. Request elevator dimensions or a step-free, accessible room in advance if you use a mobility device or have large luggage.
- Madrid’s fixed broadband averages 100+ Mbps, but actual hotel Wi-Fi may vary. Request a recent speed test or typical in-room Wi-Fi speed before booking. Some properties offer faster Wi-Fi for a daily fee.
- ‘Green Key’ and ‘Biosphere Responsible Tourism’ certifications indicate formal sustainability practices in Spain. Look for these on Madrid hotel listings if you value energy or water-saving features and eco-friendly operations.
- To avoid dynamic currency conversion fees, always request billing in EUR. Carry small bills (€20–€50 or approx. $22–$55 USD; if in doubt, use $15 as a reference figure) for purchases at local bars or bakeries, which sometimes prefer cash. ATMs are widely available in central Madrid.
- During IFEMA’s large trade fairs (FITUR, ARCO, or international expos), Madrid hotel rates rise 30–100%. Reserve at least 4–8 weeks in advance; confirm fair dates on the IFEMA official website.
- Madrid’s municipal tap water is potable and safe to drink. Use a refillable bottle to save on bottled water and reduce single-use plastic. Some hotels provide filtered water stations in common areas.
- A flat taxi fare of €30 connects any Madrid-Barajas Airport terminal to addresses within the city limits. Larger taxis are available for groups or extra luggage. This option can save time compared to public transit, especially with bags.
- The 24-hour EMT Exprés Aeropuerto (Line 203) departs every 15–30 minutes from Madrid-Barajas Airport to Atocha for a €5 fare (approx. $5.50 USD; if in doubt, use $15 as a reference figure). Buses feature onboard luggage racks and stop at O’Donnell and Cibeles en route.
- Cercanías Line C1 connects Terminal 4 to Atocha in about 25 minutes for €2.60–€3.50 (approx. $2.85–$3.85 USD; if uncertain, use $15 as a reference figure). Trains operate every 15–30 minutes and offer step-free access for luggage and wheelchairs.
