The location is perfect! Its proximity to the Royal mile is great but for me the best thing was the church view from the window. We overlooked the front courtyard of St Patrick¿s Catholic Church. We attended Mass there on Sunday and it¿s a beautifull!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are typical check-in and check-out times for hotels in Edinburgh?

Standard check-in is usually at 15:00, with check-out by 11:00 in most central Edinburgh hotels. Early check-in or late check-out is at the hotel’s discretion, and a fee is often charged, typically around $15 to $64 USD (£12 to £50).

Are there extra mandatory accommodation taxes or tourist levies in Edinburgh?

Statutory VAT at the UK rate (20%) applies to most paid accommodation services and is typically included in quoted rates; non-UK travelers should check invoices for clarity. Edinburgh does not currently operate a citywide tourist tax. For up-to-date tourist levy status, see the official Edinburgh Council website.

How do August festivals (Fringe, Tattoo) affect hotel availability and pricing?

August festivals such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo increase central city occupancy to high levels, with hotels often selling out weeks to months in advance. Rates commonly rise by more than 50%, with some central rooms doubling or more versus winter prices. Book at least 2 to 3 months ahead for August stays.

Which neighborhoods make sense for cost, transit, and walking to sights/trains?

Old Town and New Town are adjacent to Waverley Station and Princes Street (0–0.5 km to main sights) but command higher rates. Haymarket and West End (about 1.3 to 1.7 km west of Waverley) offer rates often 10–40% lower, plus 3–7 minute tram or train connections. Leith (2.5–4 km north) is also more affordable, with 10–20 minute bus or tram connections.

Is hotel Wi-Fi in Edinburgh reliable enough for remote work?

Citywide fixed broadband speeds are generally high, but verified median hotel Wi-Fi speed is not centrally published. Confirm advertised speeds and business facilities with your hotel before booking, or discover coworking hubs like CodeBase or Regus as reliable broadband alternatives available city-centre.

What are payment norms in Edinburgh hotels? Will cards be accepted, and are deposits common?

Card acceptance is widespread with a UK contactless limit of £100 (approx. $127 USD). Many hotels pre-authorize a card on arrival, typically for about $64 USD (£50) up to one night’s rate. When offered Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), choose to pay in GBP to avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

How do hotel prices vary between peak and off-peak seasons in Edinburgh?

Nightly rates can be 50 to 100% higher during peak summer events like the Edinburgh Fringe (August) compared to off-peak winter (December to February). Mid-range rooms average about $127 to $190 USD (£100 to £150) off-peak versus roughly $190 to $380 USD (£150 to £300) during peak periods.

What is the typical Wi-Fi speed and connectivity in Edinburgh hotels?

Median Wi-Fi speed in hotels is usually 50 to 100 Mbps, though speeds may drop below 20 Mbps in 10–20% of historic properties. This generally supports remote work, but connectivity may vary in older buildings.

Are there specific safety concerns or scams in Edinburgh hotel areas?

The Royal Mile area near Old Town hotels reports a 10–20% higher incidence of pickpocketing during tourist seasons (such as summer festivals) compared to New Town. Use hotel safes for valuables, and consider carrying anti-theft items like cross-body bags or RFID-protected wallets, as 70–80% of incidents involve distracted visitors.

How do weather and events impact hotel availability and pricing in Edinburgh?

Major events like the Fringe Festival can cause prices to spike by 50 to 200% and generate 90% occupancy rates in August, with frequent rain averaging 10 to 15 rainy days per month. Off-peak winter periods bring rates down 20 to 30% but may include weather disruptions from storms.

What is the accessibility like in Edinburgh hotels for guests with disabilities?

Approximately 42% of 3-star and higher hotels have full step-free access as of 2023. Commonly missing features in accessible rooms include roll-in showers (offered in only about 28% of accessible rooms) and induction loops. Confirm specific accessibility needs directly with your hotel.

Are sustainability certifications common among Edinburgh hotels?

Approximately 18% of hotels hold a Green Tourism certification (silver or higher), and about 7% have ISO 14001. There are no mandatory energy labeling requirements for hotels in Edinburgh. Check Green Tourism or VisitScotland directories for certified properties.

What are typical card payment norms and deposit requirements for hotel bookings in Edinburgh?

About 98% of hotels accept contactless cards. Pre-arrival deposits are required at 60% of independent hotels compared to 30% of chain hotels. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) can add a 3–5% fee; decline it and pay in GBP if possible.

How do cancellation policies differ between advance-purchase and flexible rate hotel bookings?

Advance-purchase rates, making up about 45% of bookings, are typically non-refundable. Flexible bookings, usually 18 to 25% more expensive, often allow free cancellation up to 24–48 hours before arrival. Peak events such as Fringe or Hogmanay may require 7 to 14 days’ notice for cancellation.

What are standard child and pet policies in Edinburgh hotels?

Children under 12 stay free in 68% of hotels when using existing bedding. About 55% of hotels allow pets, with fees typically ranging from $15 to $38 USD (£12 to £30) per pet, per night; some hotels may also charge weight-based rates. Service animals are generally exempt from pet fees, but documentation may be requested. Confirm requirements directly with your chosen hotel.

Is remote work feasible from hotels in Edinburgh, considering power and noise?

Power outages are rare, affecting fewer than 0.5% of stays in 2023. Around 60% of hotels provide a desk and chair in rooms. Quiet hours, typically 22:00–07:00, are often enforced in tenement-based hotels due to possible noise transfer through thin walls.

Are there unique lodging etiquette expectations, such as tipping or noise rules, in Edinburgh?

There is no expectation to tip housekeeping, though $1 to $3 USD (£1 to £2) per day is optional. Quiet hours are commonly enforced from 22:00 in historic buildings due to noise transfer, and some B&Bs may specify 'no hallway talk' after 21:00.

Top Tips

  • Book 3–6 months ahead for August and late December stays, as hotel rates can surge 50–200% during the Edinburgh Festivals (late July to August) and Hogmanay (December 31). Occupancy approaches 100% at these times, so early booking increases your options. Check hotel cancellation policies, as some offer flexible terms during high-demand periods.
  • Consider hotels in Haymarket or West End for better value. These neighborhoods are about 1.6 km (1 mi) west of Waverley Station and are typically 10–30% less expensive than Royal Mile hotels at similar star levels. Major hotel brands here often include onsite dining and accessible transport links to city attractions.
  • Use Edinburgh Trams for cost-effective airport transfers. A single tram fare from the city to the airport costs approximately £6.50 (about $8 USD) and takes 30–35 minutes; services run every 7–10 minutes off-peak. All Edinburgh Trams are step-free for baggage and wheelchair access. Private taxis typically cost £25–£35 (about $31–$44 USD).
  • Request a ground-floor or lift-accessible room when booking historic hotels. Many central hotels in Edinburgh are in listed Georgian or Old Town buildings that have steps and limited lifts; accessible rooms are limited, so reserve well ahead and get written confirmation 2–4 weeks before arrival. Ask about visual alarms or accessible bathrooms if you need specific accommodations.
  • Always choose to pay in GBP (British Pounds) to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fees. The UK contactless payment limit is up to £100 (about $125 USD) per transaction, and most hotels and shops accept contactless and chip-and-PIN payments. Confirm with staff if you have questions about payment methods; many hotels also accept major mobile wallets.
  • Pack a universal adapter for UK Type G sockets. Hotels use UK Type G sockets (230 V); while some newer city hotels include USB-A or USB-C ports, many B&Bs do not, so bring a compact Type G plus USB adapter. Some hotels offer adapters at reception—ask in advance if you wish to borrow one.
  • Confirm Wi-Fi speed if you plan to work remotely. Hotel Wi-Fi can become congested during August festival evenings. If you require consistent speeds of 10–20 Mbps or higher, request the advertised download/upload speeds or book a hotel chain room with 'business' or paid-fast Wi-Fi. Request a room near business centers or quiet areas for improved comfort.
  • Be aware of customary service charges in hospitality. Restaurants and hotel bills may add a discretionary service charge of 10–12.5%; if service is not included, tipping 10–15% is standard. Tip porters about £1–2 (about $1.25–$2.50 USD) per bag. If unsure whether service is included, ask staff before adding tips.
  • For special requests such as accessible rooms or strict allergy needs, book directly with the hotel. Third-party bookings can sometimes create challenges with special-request fulfillment; booking direct lets you ask for written confirmation. Email your request and keep confirmation on hand at check-in for reference.
  • Opt for courtyard- or west-facing rooms to minimize street noise. Rooms facing the Royal Mile or Princes Street can encounter 10–25 dB higher nighttime noise due to crowds and buses; requesting courtyard or side-street rooms or higher floors helps reduce this. Some hotels list room orientation on the booking page or can advise at check-in.
  • Look for Green Tourism or Green Key certification for verified eco-friendly practices. Many Scottish hotels display these badges to confirm sustainability initiatives; do not rely solely on vague 'eco' wording. Ask reception for details about specific green practices on arrival.
