Good hotel if you enjoy fun-loving, active children and want to be near Ottawa. The kids were loud and the walls are thin, but the that was fine for these two grandparents. Friendly workers and free parking was nice for me. Enjoyed our visit to Ottawa!

Top Tips
- Book your Ottawa hotel 6 to 8 weeks before major events like Winterlude (February) or Canada Day (July 1) to avoid 35-50% rate surges. Late bookings can exceed $250 CAD (approx. $185–$190 USD) while early bookings often secure rates near $160-$190 CAD (approx. $118–$140 USD). Verify event dates annually, as schedules may vary.
- Stay in Centretown or Sandy Hill to cut transit time to key attractions by 18-25 minutes compared to suburbs like Kanata or Orleans. These central neighborhoods offer walkability to Parliament Hill (under 1.5 km) and direct access to OC Transpo Line 1.
- Factor in 14.5% total taxes and fees (13% HST + 1.5% municipal lodging tax) when comparing quoted hotel rates. A $150 CAD (approx. $127 USD) base rate becomes $171.75 CAD (approx. $127 USD) after taxes, a higher uplift than in some other Canadian provinces. Confirm the final total when booking to budget accurately.
- Choose hotels with dual-voltage power outlets (110-120V) and USB ports, especially if using international devices or specialized equipment, as older properties in Lowertown may lack consistent 240V support. Confirm outlet type at check-in if traveling with essential devices.
- Insist on paying in CAD at hotel front desks to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fees, which typically add a 3-5% markup to your bill. Ask to charge your card in CAD to save on unfavorable exchange rates.
- Request accessible, step-free rooms with visual fire alarms when booking for mobility or hearing needs, as only 40-60% of 3-star or higher hotels in Ottawa fully comply with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Larger chains like Delta or Marriott are generally more reliable than B&Bs for access; notify the hotel of your needs before arrival.
- Use ATMs inside bank branches such as RBC or TD downtown to avoid $15 third-party fees from hotel or convenience store kiosks. Bank-owned ATMs typically charge only $0-$2 CAD (approx. $0-$1.50 USD) for non-customers.
- Prioritize properties with Energy Star or Green Key certification; Ottawa has 22 Green Key hotels as of 2023, which reduce water use by 20-30% compared to non-certified peers and often provide better indoor air quality. To travel more sustainably, opt out of daily housekeeping and use digital check-in/out where available.
- Expect 80-120 Mbps average in-room Wi-Fi at 4-star or higher hotels, suitable for video calls. Smaller inns may drop to 25-40 Mbps during peak hours (7-9 PM); confirm business center or Ottawa Public Library Wi-Fi access (library speeds 150+ Mbps) if you need higher bandwidth.
- Carry reusable water bottles as Ottawa’s tap water is safe and meets Ontario Drinking Water Standards. Refill stations are available in most downtown hotels and transit hubs, saving you $2-$4 CAD (approx. $1.50–$3 USD) per bottle and reducing plastic use.
- Tip housekeeping $5–$10 CAD (approx. $4–$7 USD) per stay (not daily) and bell staff $2–$5 CAD (approx. $1.50–$4 USD) per bag, as service staff in Ottawa report lower tips than in Toronto. Tipping at these rates supports equitable staff earnings.
- During January-February, confirm your hotel’s heating system reliability, as 3-5% of pre-1980 buildings report furnace failures during cold snaps (below –25°C). Request rooms above the ground floor to reduce cold exposure, and ask about backup heating arrangements in advance during very cold weather.
