Top Tips
- Secure rates for major University of Wisconsin event weekends 6-12 weeks in advance, as downtown hotels frequently sell out for Badger home football games and May commencement. Booking early maximizes your choice of rooms within 0.5 mile of campus. Check cancellation policies in case your plans change.
- Standard taxi and rideshare fares from Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) to downtown Madison range from $25-$40 USD for the 7-9 mile trip, which takes 15-20 minutes. Check with your hotel for available airport shuttles, as some chains offer complimentary service for direct bookings.
- Downtown Madison hotels are 0.3-0.8 miles from the State Capitol, about a 6-18 minute walk for most guests. Verify step-free entrances or visual alarms in advance if you have accessibility needs, as features differ by hotel brand.
- Onsite hotel parking in downtown Madison usually costs $20-$45 USD per night. For longer stays, nearby municipal garages often offer daily rates from $10-$25 USD. Compare rates and confirm in-and-out privileges if you plan multiple trips.
- Request a high or interior-facing room to minimize street noise from State Street or local nightlife, which can last until 2:00 a.m. Confirm your room preference upon arrival, especially during weekends or festival dates.
- Bring a hardened U-lock and confirm your hotel's bike storage policy if cycling. Madison supports year-round commuting, but overnight street racks are not recommended due to theft risks. Many chain hotels provide secure indoor bike storage on request.
- For reliable Wi-Fi when working remotely, choose major chain hotels or verify actual upload and download speeds at check-in, as independent properties may limit bandwidth. Ask about coworking spaces or business centers if you need secure connections.
- In Madison winters (November-March), opt for hotels with 24-48 hour flexible cancellation and onsite covered parking to manage snow disruptions. Pack non-slip footwear and ask about ramp or step-free access if you require it.
- Madison's tap water is safe and regularly tested, so save costs by refilling a reusable bottle from hotel room faucets or public stations. Ice machines are available on most guest floors in chain hotels if you want cold drinks.
