Top Tips
- Secure hotel rates up to 50% lower by booking 3-4 months in advance for peak foliage season, typically late September to mid-October in Burlington. This lead time ensures room availability during Vermont's high-demand fall period, especially at brands like Hilton and Marriott.
- Rates at hotels near the University of Vermont can double during orientation (August) or graduation (May). Consider staying in the South End or New North End neighborhoods - distances are typically under 2.5 miles from campus and may offer lower rates.
- Discover Burlington’s bike-friendly culture by choosing hotels that provide complimentary bike use. This can save $15-20 per day compared to standalone rentals. Top chains often offer this amenity or have partnerships with local providers.
- Expect a 15-20% premium for lakefront rooms. Confirm with the hotel if your room’s view is unobstructed by buildings or trees - some properties specify view quality or give window orientation maps.
- Use Burlington's free public Wi-Fi (20-30 Mbps) in downtown areas to supplement or back up hotel internet. This can benefit remote workers or guests who need stable speeds beyond hotel bandwidth during peak hours.
- Older Burlington hotels often lack elevators; request a ground-floor or accessible room if stair navigation is a concern. Check availability of step-free or ramp access if needed.
- Bring a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste. Burlington’s tap water has won quality awards, and many hotels offer refill stations in welcome areas or fitness centers.
- Pay in USD at check-out to avoid hidden 3-5% dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fees, especially at small boutique hotels with international payment processing. Ask about these charges at the front desk.
- Local service staff typically receive cash tips of 15-20% for good service. Some independent hotels or restaurants have credit card minimums, so keeping small bills handy is advised.
- Pack layers for rapidly changing Burlington weather. Temperatures can swing by 10-15°F (5-8°C) in a single day, especially from March to May and September to October.
- Combine major brand loyalty points, such as Marriott Bonvoy, with Burlington-specific discounts when available (e.g., 10% off for local residents) for greater savings. Check eligibility on the hotel website before booking.
- When traveling with a pet, verify pet policy and fees (commonly $15-50 per night) before arrival. Some hotel chains in Burlington have size or breed restrictions; ask during booking if details are not listed online.
