Top Tips
- Book oceanfront rentals 4 to 6 months ahead for summer, as rates rise 40-60% and properties book out 120-180 days in advance, especially for July 4th week.
- Choose the southern end of Pawleys Island for lower density with 60% fewer year-round residents and larger lots, or the northern end for walkability to Litchfield Beach shops (0.5 mi) and dining.
- Expect a total lodging tax of 12-15% (combined state 7%, local 2%, and tourism 4-6%) which is not always shown upfront on online travel agencies.
- Use county parks for beach access, as public beach access is limited. Litchfield County Park charges $15 per vehicle per day (cash only) and is open 7 AM to 7 PM.
- Prepare for spotty mobile coverage (median signal strength -105 dBm), and Wi-Fi speeds averaging 25-40 Mbps down, often shared across rental compounds.
- Request properties with central HVAC, as 70% of older cottages use noisier window A/C units (58 dBA noise, 8-10 dB above central systems). Central systems may cost 15% more but improve comfort.
- Avoid driving in low-lying areas, such as Old Georgetown Road, during king tides (October-November, +1.2 ft MHHW) or after heavy rain, as flooding can delay access up to 3 hours.
- Skip dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at local gas pumps, as it adds a 3-5% fee. Always choose "charge in USD" when prompted.
- Carry $15 to $50 in cash for small vendors and access fees, as 40% of beach access gates, farmers markets, and bike rentals do not accept cards.
- Verify the water source in rentals, as some older properties use private wells not treated to municipal standards. Request water test reports if immunocompromised.
- Tip 15-20% for cleaning and concierge services, as property management companies expect an 18% average tip left in an envelope, which is not included in booking fees.
- Prioritize properties with enclosed outdoor showers, as while outdoor showers are required by code, 70% of rentals lack enclosures, leading to privacy issues and insect exposure.
