Top Tips
- Book hotel rooms 4 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends to avoid typical 40-60% price increases, especially around July 4 and Labor Day. Major events can fill rooms citywide, so early booking ensures more property choice and lower rates.
- Always confirm any 'resort' or 'amenity' fees directly with marina-area hotels before booking, as nightly charges of $15-25 may not appear in online rates. Ask for a fee breakdown by phone or email to avoid billing surprises at check-out.
- Consider hotels north of the St. Joseph River in Benton Harbor for a location less than a 10-minute walk to Silver Beach County Park and the Carousel. This area provides quick pedestrian access to local attractions without needing your car.
- Choose business-class hotels such as Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn, or Courtyard by Marriott for more reliable Wi-Fi. Typical speeds of 50-70 Mbps support streaming and work needs, while many historic motels may offer under 25 Mbps. Run a speed test at check-in to confirm your connection.
- For step-free access and a roll-in shower at Silver Beach Hotel, request an accessible room in advance. Only 6 of 68 rooms meet this standard, so confirm your assignment 72 hours ahead for peace of mind. Accessible parking is also available on site.
- When using a card at gas stations near I-94 or local hotels, select 'charge in USD' at checkout to avoid 5-8% markups from dynamic currency conversion. This option is often offered on card terminals, so verify before completing your transaction.
- Saint Joseph tap water is considered safe, but flavor may vary due to older plumbing in some hotels. Enhance taste using a filtered pitcher available in most business-class properties, or fill up at public dispensers in parks or the downtown library.
- Take SouthWest Transit Route 4 for $1.50 per ride, which provides direct weekday service between Benton Harbor Amtrak, Silver Beach, and Whirlpool HQ in 12-15 minutes. Check bus schedules in advance, as timing may differ on holidays.
- Tipping housekeeping $2-5 per night is customary in 3-star and higher hotels. Provide the tip daily during multi-night stays to encourage attentive room care.
- Downtown inns in Saint Joseph often charge $10-15 daily for onsite parking. Compare this with free public options like the Church Street Lot, just two blocks from most hotels, for potential savings.
- Business travelers visiting Whirlpool Corporation may be eligible for complimentary short-term stays at the LEED-certified Guest Center. Contact your Whirlpool host directly for eligibility details, as this property is not bookable online.
- During August humidity spikes above 80%, older lakeside motels may have musty odors or mold. To minimize risk, select properties listing dehumidifiers or recent HVAC improvements in room features, and request specifics from hotel staff if concerned.
