Top Tips
- Book your Petoskey hotel 60-90 days ahead for summer weekends (June to August) and 90+ days for holiday weekends. Major chains often offer member-only rates or early-booking incentives if you reserve directly via their site or app, which can save up to 15%. Flexibility in dates or booking a midweek stay (Tuesday-Thursday) increases availability and may lower rates by 10-20% versus weekends.
- Choose a hotel in the downtown Gaslight District for walkable access to most restaurants and shops. For a quieter stay or larger room, consider properties just outside the district, where rates can be 10-15% lower. Confirm sidewalk and curb ramp access if walking is a concern, as historic areas have variable infrastructure.
- When booking a historic inn, check if step-free or elevator access is available. Many accommodations are in Victorian buildings, and smaller B&Bs may have narrow staircases with no elevator. Major brands like Marriott, Hilton, or Holiday Inn offer accessible rooms meeting ADA standards and can guarantee features such as visual alarms or roll-in showers on request.
- Fly into Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) for the shortest drive, about 20-25 minutes to Petoskey. Traverse City (TVC) is a backup, at 45-60 minutes away, with more flight and rental car options. Both airports have limited rideshare service (Uber/Lyft); after 22:00, advance booking with local taxi companies is recommended. If renting a car November to March, confirm winter tire availability.
- Expect heavy snow and occasional power outages in Northern Michigan winters. Pack a 10,000-20,000 mAh power bank, and verify your hotel's winter check-in and cancellation policy. Chains generally activate emergency protocols like on-site generators during outages. Guests with medical device needs should notify the property before arrival. Road closures between Traverse City, Pellston, and Petoskey sometimes occur during blizzards; check Michigan DOT road alerts before your trip.
- Ask about parking policy and space size before booking. Some Petoskey hotels offer valet or offsite overflow parking, and EV charging may be available on request. Downtown lots can fill during festivals, and covered garages often have maximum vehicle heights of 6-7 feet, which may not fit trucks with rooftop cargo boxes.
- If you need strong Wi-Fi for remote work or video calls, confirm service-level details such as recent speed test results (target at least 5 Mbps upload). Chain hotels usually publish business center and Wi-Fi stats, while smaller or boutique hotels may provide info if asked.
- Time your check-in alongside local dining and service schedules in the shoulder season (late fall to spring), as front desk hours are often reduced. Many area restaurants and shops also shorten hours or close certain days from November to April. Check if your hotel supports digital key or after-hours check-in, and if exterior entrances have added security after 20:00.
