Methodology: learn how we calculate these charts
The charts “Which days have the lowest hotel rates?”, “Which month has the best hotel rates?”, “How far in advance should I book?” and “How much do hotels cost by star rating?” are built from the nightly rates Priceline customers actually paid for hotels in Grand Rapids, grouped by check-in month, day of the week, how far ahead they booked (up to 90 days) and the hotel’s star class.
Where a place has too few bookings to fill every point in a chart, we borrow the shape of the curve from nearby places with similar prices and fit it to the rates booked here.
Because past rates don’t reflect today’s market, each chart is then fitted to the rates found in this page’s current search: its value at the search’s own check-in month, day and booking lead time is set to the current good-deal rate.
The Good to Know deal cards and the hotels listed on this page come directly from that recent search, not from historical bookings.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are typical hotel check-in and check-out times in Grand Rapids?
Most hotels enforce a 3:00 PM check-in and 11:00 AM check-out. Early check-in (from 1:00 PM) or late check-out (until 1:00 PM) often costs $15 to $30 USD if available.
Are there unexpected fees or taxes on hotel stays in Grand Rapids?
Expect a 6% state tax plus a 5% local tax, totaling 11%. Downtown hotels may add a $2-$5 USD per night 'destination fee' for amenities. Resort fees are rare.
How much do hotel prices fluctuate between peak and off-season in Grand Rapids?
Peak season (June-August, December) rates average 30-50% higher than off-season (January-March). ArtPrize (September) spikes downtown rates by approximately 40%.
Which Grand Rapids neighborhoods are best for walkability to attractions?
Downtown has a 90+ walk score, placing you within a 10-minute walk of museums, Van Andel Arena, and breweries. Eastown is quieter but requires rideshares, typically a 15-minute drive to the downtown core.
Is hotel Wi-Fi reliable for remote work in Grand Rapids?
Downtown hotels average 25-50 Mbps (free), but some budget properties drop below 10 Mbps. Bandwidth may vary by room location and property size. Coworking spaces like The Factory offer fiber internet with a day pass costing $15 USD. Confirm Wi-Fi capability if remote work is essential.
Are there any lodging scams or safety concerns in Grand Rapids hotel areas?
While rare, reports of fraud are higher in unverified short-term rentals east or south of the downtown core; verify all listings before booking. Hotel parking garages downtown occasionally see smash-and-grabs, so secure valuables.
How accessible are Grand Rapids hotels for mobility devices?
Approximately 80% of downtown hotels offer step-free entries and ADA accessible rooms, but only 2-4 such rooms are available per property. Roll-in showers are inconsistent in mid-range chains. Contact your hotel directly to confirm accessible room availability and shower configuration.
Do Grand Rapids hotels accommodate pets?
About 60% of hotels allow pets, typically dogs under 50 lbs, for a fee of $15 to $30 USD per night. The Amway Grand and JW Marriott charge $100 USD per stay.
How far is Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) from downtown Grand Rapids and how long do transfers typically take?
GRR is about 11-15 miles southeast of downtown Grand Rapids. Typical drive time is 15-25 minutes off-peak and 25-40 minutes in rush or event traffic.
How much do hotel rates change for major local events in Grand Rapids?
Major events like ArtPrize (late September-October) and Festival of the Arts (June) can push downtown hotel occupancy toward full capacity, with rates often spiking up to 1.5-2 times typical rates.
Which Grand Rapids neighborhoods should I consider for hotel location, and how do they differ?
Downtown is a compact 0.5-1.0 mile commercial and meeting zone with most large hotels, highest nightly rates, and on-foot access to major museums and restaurants. Eastown, approximately 1-2 miles east of downtown, offers boutique and inn options and often lower rates.
What should I expect to pay for hotel parking in or near downtown Grand Rapids?
Downtown hotel parking or attached garage rates commonly run $15 to $30 USD per night; valet service may cost more. Always confirm parking fees on the property booking page.
How flexible are cancellation rules and how much can you save by booking non-refundable rates in Grand Rapids?
Advance purchase or non-refundable rates generally run approximately 10-40% cheaper than flexible (free-cancellation) rates depending on date and demand. Always compare total refundable versus non-refundable prices before booking.
What are typical pet and family policy norms and fees in Grand Rapids hotels?
Typical practice in Grand Rapids-area properties is pet fees of roughly $15 to $30 USD per night or a flat non-refundable cleaning fee. Many larger chains allow children under 12 to stay free in existing bedding.
What are the common policies and fees for bringing pets to hotels in Grand Rapids?
About 40% of Grand Rapids hotels are pet-friendly, often with a non-refundable fee ranging from $15 to $30 USD per pet, per night. Some have weight restrictions or limit the number of pets per room.
How do major events like ArtPrize impact hotel availability and pricing in Grand Rapids?
During ArtPrize (typically September-October), hotel occupancy rates can exceed 95% and average nightly rates can spike by 40-60% compared to non-event periods. Booking 6-12 months in advance is recommended and some properties may adjust minimum stays or cancellation terms.
How flexible are cancellation policies in Grand Rapids hotels?
Flexible rates typically allow cancellation up to 24-48 hours before check-in without penalty. These rates are often 10-20% higher than non-refundable options. Book direct for better terms during major events and always review the policy details.
Top Tips
- Book hotels 45-60 days before ArtPrize (late September to early October) to avoid 35-50% price surges, as occupancy often exceeds 90% during this period. For flexible travel plans, prioritize chains like Marriott or Hilton, which often allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before arrival; verify policy during booking.
- Choose hotels on Monroe Avenue for 15-20% lower rates, averaging $135-$175 USD per night, compared to Pearl Street's $160-$210 USD, while maintaining a high walk score of 82-88 to downtown attractions. Monroe Avenue properties are close to DeVos Place and public art installations along this corridor.
- Verify if your quoted rate includes the full 13% lodging tax (6% Kent County, 3% Grand Rapids city, 4% state), as this can add $15-$26 USD per night to a $100-$200 USD stay and may not be itemized on all online travel agencies. For international guests, tax is usually not included in quoted rates from third-party sites; always check the final price at checkout.
- Explicitly request step-free access, as only an estimated 12-14% of downtown hotels, like the Amway Grand Plaza or JW Marriott, display verified ADA-compliant rooms online; always call to confirm features such as roll-in showers, elevator access, visual alert features, or accessible bathroom layouts to match your needs.
- Use local bank ATMs, such as U.S. Bank or Huntington, to withdraw cash and cap fees at $2.50-$3.00 USD, avoiding dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fees at hotels, which can add 3-7% in hidden charges. Use ATMs located inside banks or hotel lobbies for added security.
- Prioritize hotels advertising 100+ Mbps Wi-Fi if working remotely; the median download speed for business hotels downtown is 65 Mbps, but properties like the Kimpton Amway Hotel offer over 120 Mbps with fiber connections. Contact the hotel to confirm current speeds, as public Wi-Fi quality can fluctuate during peak occupancy.
- Avoid ride-share surge pricing during Van Andel Arena events by selecting hotels within a 0.5-mile radius, such as the JW Marriott (0.4 miles), which have a walk score of 90+ and eliminate transport costs for events. Many hotels in this area also offer direct access to the Skywalk, providing covered routes to Van Andel Arena and nearby dining.
- Decline daily housekeeping during summer months (June-August) to support local water conservation; hotels participating in city sustainability programs, like the LEED-certified Amway Grand Plaza, can reduce linen washing by 30%. Ask your hotel if they participate in Grand Rapids' Green Lodging Initiative when checking in.
- Consider tipping housekeeping $2-$5 USD per day in cash; while not universally required, 70% of guests at 4-star+ hotels in Grand Rapids now leave daily tips, with envelopes provided at properties like the Kimpton and JW Marriott. If paying with a card, ask if you can add a daily tip at the front desk to ensure housekeeping receives it.
- Select hotels with backup generators, as downtown Grand Rapids faces a 25% higher risk of power outages during the May-July thunderstorm season, with properties like the Amway Grand Plaza listing on-site generators for critical systems. If you rely on medical devices, notify the hotel ahead of your stay and confirm backup power arrangements.
- Be aware that Grand Rapids tap water, sourced from the Mississippi River, meets EPA standards but contains chloramine; sensitive individuals may prefer filtered or bottled water, which is available at all hotels. Filtered water dispensers are often available in hotel fitness centers or lounges; ask the front desk for locations.
- Stack AAA/CAA or AARP discounts for 5-10% savings at chain hotels like Marriott, Hilton, and Choice properties; these discounts often require phone booking or ID verification at check-in and are rarely applied via online travel agencies. For international travelers, AAA/CAA and AARP eligibility requires membership and ID; otherwise, look for publicly available advance purchase rates.
