Top Tips
- Book early for events and weekends, as rooms in Pekin can fill rapidly for the Pekin Marigold Festival (September), county fairs, or college and sports events in nearby Peoria. Reserve at least a few weeks out for peak times, check local event calendars, and use hotel loyalty programs in advance to secure perks during busy periods.
- Choose hotels offering free parking, typical in Pekin, and confirm policies for oversized vehicles, trailers, or RVs. If you need accessible or EV parking, ask hotels in advance since options vary by property.
- Public transportation is limited, so plan your transport before arrival. Contact your hotel about airport shuttle schedules (Peoria International Airport, PIA, is about 25-40 minutes by car) or pre-book with local operators like Peoria Charter or area taxi services for smoother transfers.
- Review cancellation and early or late check-in policies, as many budget hotels in small Midwestern cities use strict non-refundable rates. If you need flexibility, book a refundable option and request written confirmation of the policy if reserving by phone.
- If reliable Wi-Fi is essential for work or streaming, confirm internet speed and business amenities with the front desk. Ask about desk space in guest rooms or whether lobbies and public areas are suitable for work.
- Verify pet policies and fees in advance since local hotels may charge nightly fees, have weight limits, or require deposits. Ask about leash rules and nearby green spaces for dog walking, as many Midwestern cities have public parks close by.
- Arrive with a valid photo ID and credit or debit card, as standard U.S. check-in policies require both and typically place a temporary hold for incidentals. Let the hotel know ahead if you require accessible check-in, such as step-free counters.
- Tip hotel staff according to U.S. custom: bellhops $15 per bag, valet $15, and housekeeping $15 per night, left daily. You can tip in cash or at checkout; ask the front desk about local etiquette for other service roles like breakfast staff or shuttle drivers.
- Read recent TripAdvisor, Google, or hotel loyalty app reviews for verified insights on cleanliness, bed comfort, noise, or plumbing before booking. Current guest feedback helps you identify issues not always listed on booking platforms.
- Ask about housekeeping preferences and privacy at check-in, as many hotels now offer daily service only by request or on specific days. If you want hypoallergenic bedding or added sanitization, request it during booking or upon arrival.
- Confirm non-smoking rules on arrival since Illinois bans smoking in most indoor public spaces and violations may result in cleaning fees. Ask hotels about designated outdoor smoking areas, as many properties provide specific spaces.
- Account for Illinois state, local, and occupancy taxes that can add several percentage points to the nightly rate. Request a detailed bill at checkout to review all charges, especially if you booked through a third-party platform.
- In spring or after heavy rain, be aware that Pekin can experience river flooding or road closures, particularly near the Illinois River. Ask hotels if parking or ground-floor rooms are affected during high water seasons and check local news for updates.
- Booking direct often yields benefits like breakfast, room upgrades, or waived fees. Enroll in the hotel’s loyalty program before you travel to unlock better late check-out or guaranteed amenities immediately on arrival.
- Nearby dining is mostly casual and many Pekin restaurants close earlier than in larger cities, so request current hours and recommendations from the front desk, especially if arriving late. Ask if the hotel offers a late-night snack or pantry option, or if there are nearby 24-hour convenience stores.
