Top Tips
- Reserve hotel rooms at least 4-8 weeks ahead for University of Iowa football games, graduation, or major Iowa City festivals. Downtown hotels and those near campus reach capacity quickly and nightly rates often rise by 20-50%. Confirm flexible cancellation if your plans may change.
- Select a hotel based on your main activities. Hotels within 0.5 miles of the Downtown Pedestrian Mall give quickest access to dining, museums, and nightlife. Medical guests may prefer properties within 0.3 miles (500 m) of University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC), while Coralville/Iowa River Landing offers newer hotels with shopping and family amenities.
- Expect overnight parking fees of $15-20 at most Iowa City hotels. Many offer complimentary or on-demand shuttles to Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) or UIHC; verify schedules before arrival, especially for late-night arrivals.
- Compare not just base rates, but also local taxes (7%), parking, pet, and resort fees. Choose flexible or refundable rates if your plans may change, and check whether Wi-Fi access is included in the total price.
- Bring a government-issued photo ID and a valid credit or debit card for check-in at all major hotels. If you expect unregistered visitors or need multi-person occupancy, ask about the hotel’s guest policy in advance.
- Tipping in Iowa City hotels: Leave $2-$5 per night for housekeeping (more for long stays). Bell staff typically receive $1-$2 per bag; for concierge service, $5-$15 is common when they arrange bookings or detailed guidance.
- Prepare for winter lows below 20°F (-6°C) and snow in December to February, and pack insulated layers and waterproof shoes. Summers reach 85°F (29°C) with high humidity; ask about interior corridors if mobility or weather is a concern.
- Local buses (Iowa City Transit, Cambus) serve downtown and campus areas; Uber and Lyft operate but may be scarce after midnight or during events. Pre-schedule taxis for Hawkeyes game days or when returning late, and confirm shuttle times with your hotel.
- Business travelers should confirm if Wi-Fi is free and meets 20 Mbps or higher speeds for video meetings. Ask about available business centers, printers, meeting spaces, or rooms away from event areas for a quieter work environment.
- Families can request rollaway beds, cribs, or pack 'n plays at most major chains, but supply may be limited, so request at booking. Many hotels offer free breakfast, indoor pools, and self-serve laundry; check amenities upon check-in for assistance.
- Hotels near UIHC offer patient or family rates and may provide shuttle service to the hospital, late checkout, or block reservations for multi-night stays. Ask about dedicated patient parking passes and whether accessible or step-free rooms are available.
- Many Iowa City hotels accept pets for a daily fee of $15-50, but often restrict animals to under 50 lbs (23 kg). If traveling with a service animal, contact the hotel at least 48 hours prior to arrival for documentation and verification of policies.
- Downtown hotels may experience nightlife noise until 11:00 PM during weekends. For quieter stays, request a room on an upper floor away from street-facing sides or the Pedestrian Mall; some hotels offer river or campus views for added tranquility.
- Ask hotel staff for up-to-date dining or event options. Nearby venues like Prairie Lights Bookstore and local breweries often host readings or tastings. Staff can recommend spots within a 10-minute walk or offer seasonal local festival details.
- All Iowa City hotels are smoke-free indoors, with outdoor smoking restricted to marked areas per city ordinance. COVID-19 protocols or mask rules vary seasonally; verify directly with your hotel 2 to 3 days before arrival.
- Store electronics and passports in your hotel room safe when available. Car break-ins are rare, but avoid leaving valuables in view. For early departures, ask about secure overnight parking or key drop-off at the front desk.
- If you book two or more stays annually, joining hotel loyalty programs or using AAA membership may yield up to 10% savings or free amenities like breakfast. Check for seasonal event packages; UI Hawkeyes weekends can include discounts on parking or local attractions.
- Explore farm-to-table restaurants and local bakeries within 0.4 miles of downtown hotels. Try Pullman Bar & Diner or Java House for regional flavors. For quick meals, many hotels provide complimentary breakfast or are adjacent to national chains.
- Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids is 22 miles (35 km) from downtown. Hotel shuttle or pre-booked taxi rides cost $30-50. Iowa City lacks Amtrak service, and regional connections use Burlington Trailways or Greyhound, so confirm pickup locations in advance.
- For early check-in, late check-out, adjoining or accessible rooms, or specific breakfast needs, contact your hotel at least 24 to 48 hours before arrival. Advance requests increase the likelihood of availability, especially during event weeks.
