Top Tips
- Book your hotel 2-3 months ahead for peak summer or ski season. For popular holidays or major events, reserve 3-6 months in advance. Hotels within 0.5 mi of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad fill fastest, so confirm availability early for central access.
- Compare direct booking rates with prices on OTAs. Many hotels in Durango provide perks like free breakfast or parking if you book directly, potentially lowering your effective nightly cost by $15 to $30. Verify by calling the front desk prior to booking.
- Check the hotel's cancellation policy before reserving. Some offer free cancellation up to 24-48 hours before arrival. Unpredictable mountain weather can cause travel delays or road closures near US-550, so choose flexible rates when available.
- Confirm parking details before arrival. Downtown hotels may offer complimentary on-site parking, charge $15 to $20 nightly, or have street parking that is limited during events or active snow removal. Ask about accessible parking if needed.
- Ask about secure gear storage and shuttle services to Purgatory Ski Resort (27 mi north) or partner outfitters. Many hotels offer complimentary or fee-based transfers during ski season for easier logistics.
- Verify actual Wi-Fi speed and workspace setup in advance if working remotely. Some hotels advertise high-speed Wi-Fi but average speeds can vary from 5-50 Mbps. Request a quiet room with a dedicated desk for a productive stay.
- Prepare to show a government-issued photo ID and the credit card used for booking upon check-in. Some properties require guests to be age 18 or 21+, so confirm age policies before finalizing your reservation.
- Most Durango hotels are smoke-free, including cannabis and vaping, and cleaning fees for violations can be $200-$500. Use only designated outdoor smoking areas and confirm hotel policy in advance.
- Durango’s elevation is 6,512 feet. Drink 1-2 extra liters of water daily, moderate alcohol on arrival, and use sunscreen and sunglasses. Pack layers as temperatures can shift 15-25°F between day and night year-round.
- Shuttle, taxi, and rideshare services can be limited after 10 pm. Confirm shuttle hours with your hotel and request airport transfers (to DRO, 14 mi) in advance. Local taxi numbers are available at most front desks.
- Front desks at downtown hotels can help book Durango & Silverton train tickets (stations 0.2-0.8 mi walk), river rafting, or suggest local hiking trails. Ask for real-time trail or event updates before planning your day.
- For families, check bed type, in-room kitchen facilities, and laundry access. Many large hotels in Durango provide suites with refrigerators and microwaves, as well as cribs or rollaways upon request; confirm required amenities at booking.
- Many Durango hotels allow pets, with nightly fees typically $15 to $50 and size or number restrictions (often 1-2 pets, max 50 lbs). Request ground-floor rooms and confirm pet amenity locations like relief areas and walking trails.
- For U.S. hotel staff, expected tips are $15 per bag for bell staff, $15 per day for housekeeping (leave daily), and 15-20% for restaurant servers. Bring small bills ($1-$15) for daily use.
- Quiet hours are typically 10 pm-8 am in Durango hotels. Limit noise in shared spaces during this window to avoid disturbance charges and confirm property-specific policies if traveling in a group.
- Durango hotel taxes are usually 10-15% on top of 2.9% Colorado state sales tax. Review your booking details to see the total price before paying.
- For walkable access to shops and the Durango & Silverton station, choose a hotel in downtown (Main Ave/2nd Ave area). For faster Purgatory access, select hotels near North Main Avenue as US-550 north access is 15-20 minutes.
- Request late checkout or early check-in in advance. Many Durango hotels accommodate these for free or $15 to $50 when occupancy allows; confirm availability at booking or check-in.
- Carry a small amount of cash ($10-$30) for tips, farmer’s markets, or parking meters, as some spots and vendors do not accept cards.
- Request accessible rooms or step-free ground-floor units when booking if you have mobility needs. Confirm ramp access, visual alarms, and accessible parking are available at your selected property.
- For river or water activities, bring quick-drying shoes and dry bags. Ask your hotel about secure storage or drying options for wet gear as many provide designated space during rafting season.
- Use hotel safes for valuables and always lock your car. When hiking, park in official trailhead lots as many require a permit—check signage or ask your hotel.
- Most COVID-19 requirements are relaxed, but some hotels may maintain mask policies or enhanced cleaning. Confirm any updates with your hotel 1-2 weeks before arrival.
- The Million Dollar Highway (US-550) can be narrow and icy between November and April. If unsure about driving, choose the Durango & Silverton train; tickets are available from $105 round-trip.
