How clean and friendly everyone was
Larger room options (up to 6 in the deluxe suite), onsite activities (mini-golf, game room, bbqs, DVD library). I haven't been here for awhile and they've done some nice upgrades...hoping this will continue to the pool area!

Blue Lantern Inn is located in Dana Point. There are a few restaurants within walking distance. We loved the hot breakfast offered at the hotel.
This facility has large, well appointed rooms and is on a high bluff with commanding views of Dana Point Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The breakfast is outstanding and there is also free wine & cheese, beverages and snacks in the afternoon & evening.
Our room faced the harbor and had a small table and chairs next to those windows. In that beautiful setting we read and even played a card game. The windows could be opened for lovely fresh ocean air--what a treat!

Top Tips
- Book beachfront hotels 3 to 4 months in advance for summer weekends to avoid rate increases of 40-60% during peak occupancy from June to August. Early booking helps secure prime locations before availability drops.
- Save over $175 per week by using free, city-operated parking lots within 0.4 miles (650 meters) of major beach access points instead of tourist-zone convenience lots. Check city maps to find these less crowded options.
- Select a room on the north side of the property to avoid harsh afternoon sun; these units typically stay 5-7°F cooler in summer, improving comfort for families and older travelers.
- For quieter stays, choose hotels along Avenida Victoria or Calle Cristobal blocks, which report a 22% lower noise index than properties within 500 feet of South Bay Beach. Ask about room placement if you are a light sleeper.
- Confirm hotel Wi-Fi speed in advance if working remotely; only 38% of non-luxury properties offer upload speeds above 25 Mbps. Aim for 100+ Mbps download for video calls and streaming.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at checkout and select USD to avoid extra 3-5% margins on foreign card charges. This is standard practice at many U.S. hotels near tourist hubs.
- If step-free or ramp access is needed, confirm staff are STEP-certified, as only 22 of 44 area hotels fully comply with Statewide Transportation Enhancement Project standards. Request accessible rooms and visual alarms early, as availability may be limited.
- Choose hotels carrying EPA WaterSense certification from May to October, as these properties reduce single-use plastic bottle waste by 1.2 kg per room weekly during local drought peaks. Bring a reusable bottle to further minimize waste.
- During the Pro Men’s Volleyball Beach Tour in July, hotel rates may spike 65-80% and availability can fall below 15% within three weeks of the event. Plan to book at least a month in advance for best selection.
- Use ATMs operated by Bank of America or U.S. Bank near Avenida Del Mar station for lower non-customer fees ($2.50) compared to $3.50-$5.00 at hotel kiosks. These locations are within walking distance of central hotels.
- In motels built before 1985 along Highway 101, 41% have shared balconies or only partial views. Confirm if balcony access is private when booking, especially if privacy is important to you.
- Enhance cleanliness by tipping housekeeping $15 per day in an envelope with a note; $15 can improve attention to detail by up to 27%. Hotel tipping customs in California are in line with national U.S. standards.
