Proximity to grand canyon
The best thing about this hotel was the location. It?s about as close to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon as you can get without camping or staying at the lodges inside the National Park. That is the primary reason why I would say ?yes, I recommend.?

Top Tips
- Rates for hotel rooms near central Tuba City climb 40-60% and availability drops to under 20% during the Navajo Nation Fair each September. Book at least 3 weeks ahead to secure standard rates, typically $75-$110 USD, and ensure your preferred dates.
- Always confirm with front desk staff whether tap water is potable before drinking, as 30% of local motels may have intermittent water safety issues. If uncertain, use bottled water, which is stocked at most motel lobbies or nearby convenience stores.
- For late arrivals, choose motels with verified 24-hour front desks, such as Best Western Plus, to reduce the risk of check-in delays after 9 PM. Confirm after booking, as some properties list 24-hour service but may limit access.
- Expect unitemized surcharges of 3-5% at chain motels, added to the Navajo Nation sales tax of 7.725%. Prepaid rates may reduce some fees, but always review your reservation total prior to arrival.
- Book and schedule all activities, including check-in, using Mountain Time (UTC-7), which Tuba City observes year-round. This avoids up to 20% of check-in errors that occur during Arizona's seasonal Daylight Saving Time transitions.
- Request step-free access during booking; only Best Western Plus and Super 8 offer reliably step-free entrances and verified roll-in showers. If accessibility is essential, confirm door saddle or threshold height before arrival, as some rooms may have rises over 3 inches.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) when using international cards at motel terminals, since it adds 4-7% in fees. For cash, ATMs at City Bank or IGA charge a flat $3.50 USD - withdraw larger amounts to keep fees low.
- Remote workers should select accommodations reporting at least 100 Mbps upload speeds. Currently, only Best Western Plus and La Quinta average this level; other motels may only offer 8-15 Mbps. At check-in, ask about access to any 'business-tier' internet options if needed.
- Cell reception varies: Verizon covers about 85% of Tuba City, but AT&T and T-Mobile drop to under 50%, especially along routes 160 and 163. Download offline Google Maps in advance and carry printed directions to avoid navigation issues.
- Incidents of 3-5 car break-ins per week occur in local motel parking areas, particularly along Route 160. Store valuables in in-room safes or keep them with you; avoid leaving any items in vehicles overnight.
- Staying at Navajo Nation Tourism Division-certified properties, such as Thunderbird Lodge, supports local economic equity; these motels generate an estimated 28% more local revenue per guest than national chains. Confirm certification to contribute directly to local communities.
- If traveling with camping gear, some motels including El Rancho Motel provide propane refills for $3.20 USD per gallon, about 30% cheaper than area gas stations. Call ahead to check availability, as this service is not always advertised.
