Top Tips
- Secure your hotel booking at least 3 months ahead of September-November to save up to 15% on average rates before the 20-30% price surge during peak fall foliage. Confirm cancellation policies, as many flexible rate options allow no-penalty changes until 24 hours prior.
- Select hotels with complimentary breakfast, such as Comfort Inn or Hampton Inn, to save $15 daily per guest. Confirm inclusions, as offerings range from full hot breakfasts to continental setups.
- During hunting season (October-December), hotel availability decreases and prices rise to accommodate visitors to nearby hunting areas. Book early and check cancellation terms, especially for weekends.
- Explore Bed and Breakfasts like Reedsville Inn, typically priced 10-20% lower than major hotels and offering locally sourced breakfasts. Verify payment methods and cancellation policies before booking.
- Check for event-specific packages at hotels near Penn State University, especially during major sports or graduation weekends, as rates can spike. Confirm package inclusions and rates before booking.
- Plan for a 10-20 minute drive to Lewistown for the largest selection of hotels and 24-hour amenities, since in-town Reedsville options are limited. Verify parking availability during busy weekends.
- Rent a car for reliable transportation, as public transit and rideshares are limited in rural Mifflin County. Factor in local parking - most hotels and motels offer free onsite spaces.
- If you need reliable internet, request hotels’ specific upload/download speeds (look for at least 25 Mbps download). Chain hotels usually provide consistent business amenities; confirm directly for rural or B&B stays.
- For November-March visits, verify winter road clearance and inquire about heating, including whether parking lots are plowed and if rooms have individual heat controls. This ensures a comfortable stay during 20-30 inches average snowfall.
- Bring prescription medication and basic groceries, or plan a stop in Lewistown upon arrival, since Reedsville shops often close before 20:00. Request a minifridge in your room if storing perishables.
- For step-free entry, elevator access, or ground-floor rooms, request in writing ahead of arrival - many small hotels are in historic buildings with stairs and limited accessibility adaptations.
- Carry $15 to $50 in cash for small purchases at local vendors, farm stands, or markets, where credit cards may not be accepted. Use ATMs at local pharmacies (such as Rite Aid) to avoid higher hotel ATM fees.
- Book 6-8 weeks ahead for July-August visits to avoid 15-25% price jumps, especially when nearby state parks are busiest on weekends. Compare rates on weekdays for additional savings.
- Account for the 11% hotel tax (6% Pennsylvania sales tax + 5% Mifflin County occupancy tax), which typically adds $11-$22 per night on a $100 room rate. Ask if taxes are included in your quoted total.
- Expect local hotel Wi-Fi download speeds between 20-40 Mbps, with possible slowdowns during peak evening hours. Confirm Wi-Fi coverage and speed maps if consistent connectivity is critical.
- Choose hotels along US-322 for an area where crime rates are 30% lower than county averages. For added security, select properties with 24-hour front desk service.
- If step-free access is essential, specify this during booking - only 40-50% of Reedsville hotels or motels feature ADA-compliant ramps. Confirm by phone if you need accessible rooms or bathrooms.
- During December-February, power outages lasting 1-2 hours can occur due to 20-30 inches of annual snow. Choose hotels with backup generators and clarify emergency protocols at check-in.
- Booking directly with small local hotels or inns may offer lower rates or additional perks compared to third-party sites. Ask about direct-booking advantages before reserving.
- Check whether breakfast is full hot or continental, and confirm its serving hours in advance - smaller hotels may limit breakfast to early morning, especially on weekends.
- Verify local restaurant hours in Reedsville, as many close by 20:00 or have limited hours on Sundays. Plan accordingly if arriving late.
- If planning outdoor activities, choose accommodations within a 10-15 minute drive of trailheads near Kishacoquillas Valley. Confirm parking and access with your hotel.
- Ensure your hotel offers free on-site parking, especially during major events, as lots can fill quickly. Confirm parking is included when reserving downtown or B&B properties.
- Book 30+ days in advance for Penn State football home games (September-November) or Mifflin County Youth Fair (August); hotel prices can rise 40-60% during these periods. Confirm rate terms, as some event bookings may be non-refundable.
- Select chain hotels near I-99/US-322, such as Comfort Inn Reedsville, for free parking. Downtown B&Bs may charge $15 per night for parking - ask for details before booking.
- If dependable Wi-Fi is vital, review recent guest experiences or call hotels directly to verify download speeds - rural hotels may advertise 'high-speed' internet but deliver less than 10 Mbps during busy hours.
- Avoid additional resort fees by choosing motels 10-15 minutes outside Reedsville, like Super 8, instead of lodges at Bald Eagle State Park, where fees often add $15-$25 per night.
- Family-run B&Bs and inns may offer a 3-5% discount for cash payment to offset card processing fees. Ask about payment options when you book.
- Ensure your accommodation has air conditioning if staying from June-August, as older buildings may lack AC and average daily highs reach 80°F (27°C) or more.
- Secure your September-October lodging by late August to avoid 30-50% rate increases during peak fall foliage. Flexible rates may be limited after this window.
- When withdrawing cash at State College Airport (SCE) ATMs, choose to pay in USD to avoid 2-3% Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fees on your withdrawal.
- ATMs at Sheetz or Rite Aid typically charge $2.50 per withdrawal, while hotel ATMs can cost $5 or more. Plan cash needs ahead to minimize fees.
- Only 30% of Reedsville accommodations allow pets, often charging $15-$50 per night. Confirm policies and fees before booking if bringing a pet.
- Pair hotel loyalty programs like Marriott Bonvoy with a co-branded credit card (for example, Chase Sapphire) at major chains to earn 15-20% more rewards per stay. Verify points-earning rules prior to check-in.
- Hotel prices often surge 40-60% on Friday-Sunday nights of Penn State home football games. Compare weekday stays or look 20 minutes outside event centers for lower rates.
- Request disclosure of any cleaning products or allergy triggers at Pennsylvania hotels, since local law does not require advance notification. If sensitive, bring personal bedding or air filters.
- Utilize free parking at Sheetz locations to save $15 daily versus hotel garages, but check posted occupancy limits and towing policies at each site.
- Meals at local diners generally cost 30-40% less than in-hotel restaurants. Check menus online or call ahead to confirm dietary accommodations.
- Ask your hotel about quiet hours, typically enforced between 22:00-07:00, if you plan to work remotely or need uninterrupted rest.
- For Appalachian Trail stays April-June, book 6+ months out - occupancy reaches 85% and reservations open as early as January 1. Limited rooms may require non-refundable deposits.
- For private rentals with well water, request water quality test documentation - 30% of such rentals may have non-potable water. Bring bottled water as a backup.
- Pre-purchase fuel and essentials before arriving in Reedsville, as the town has only one gas station and grocery store. Out-of-town supply runs typically add 22-34 minutes round-trip.
- When booking a cabin rental, request step-free access in writing. Ninety percent of area cabins have entry stairs or decks - confirm if ramps or accessible features are available.
- At gas stations like Shell or Sheetz, opt to pay in USD at the pump. This avoids Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) markups averaging 5.2% per transaction.
- Median rural internet upload speeds range from 12-18 Mbps; if continuous remote work is essential, consider properties with Starlink, which can provide 95-150 Mbps symmetrical speeds. Request speed test results before booking.
- Download offline maps (such as Google Maps) or use paper maps, as cell coverage drops along 47% of US-522 north of Reedsville (especially for Verizon users). Confirm your provider’s coverage area before travel.
- For winter rentals using wood stoves (40% of such properties), request kindling and a safety screen beforehand. Firewood typically costs $7 per bundle on site; clarify heating options during booking.
- Tip 15% at local diners like Reedsville Diner or Tasty Treat for counter service, as service charges are not included in menu prices.
- Ask if the Pennsylvania sales tax (6%) is included in VRBO or private rental rates, as some hosts list only pre-tax prices. Confirm in writing to avoid unexpected fees.
- Avoid booking over July 4th unless attending hunting events, as the Mifflin County Fair can double local population and drive rents up 40-60% compared to average weeks.
- For serious medical emergencies, fastest MedFlight access is via the PA 45/US-322 corridor. The nearest trauma center, UPMC Presbyterian in Harrisburg, is approximately 52 minutes by road; verify your hotel’s emergency plan at check-in.
