    Pros +

    • The place is truly magical—set in the forest by the river. The hotel itself is a bit old, which was already visible in the photos, but it is very clean and well maintained. We stayed for only two nights, but we already fell in love with this place. The Japanese breakfast and dinner were a wonderful and interesting experience, with lots of fresh fish and many new dishes we had never tried before. The room had a beautiful view of the river and a private hot spring. The staff were very polite, friendly, and helpful. Thank you all for such a great experience.
    • I stayed on the river view side and the view from the room was amazing. The huge window really made it feel like I was sitting right next to the river. As a bonus, I saw plenty of deer come by at night to graze. Having your own in-room hot spring let's you enjoy the river view while you soak your aches away. The hotel offers plenty extra amenities that I wasn't expecting, including ramen and ice cream each night, a massage parlor, a lounge with free (non-alcoholic drinks). This is one of the best places I've stayed at in Japan.
    • The facilities themselves were phenomenal, and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience

    Cons -

    • I didn't find any problems with my stay.
    • Food was REALLY bad, and with almost no vegetarian options at all. The "western breakfast" had mostly non breakfast dishes (such as lasagna). Staff had a hard time with English which lead to miscommunication, and we were charged quite a lot for a dinner we didn't even touch.
    • Lack of flexibility on dinner reservation

    10FrancisPosted on: 4-18-2025

The dinner and breakfast were excellent. We always have a nice view of the river while we dine. Our room was also facing the river. The scenery was so tranquil. We love the onsen, and the option of having a private onsen as well. I love everything about this place.

    10RebeccaPosted on: 4-2-2025

The Hotel room was breathtaking! You could see deer from your hotel window and a great view of the river. The hotel offered private onsen and even had one in the room. Great if you have tattoos. The breakfast was delicious. Highly recommend staying here.

Great size of the room, entire hotel surrounded by nature

1.Was asked to return my key each time I leave the house with the argument, that it would be a bother if I lost the keys. Felt treated like a child!2. Bar closed without prior information for renovation (at least to what I've understood) 3. Restaurant only available upon prior reservation leaving no room to be spontaneous.4. Generally the facilities were clean, however, there were heavy stains of limescale on the window in the bath, making it very hard to enjoy the view and even more stains on the window facing the living area, which seemed very unhygienic.

Breakfast is okay. Location is superb. Outdoor onsen is wonderful. Soak in nature. Beautiful. Feel fully recharged. A great experience.

    The food can be better.

    10KyliePosted on: 2-20-2025

Beautiful location, immersed in nature. The rooms were exceptional. We could have sat at the window watching the river and wildlife for hours. On top of that were the wonderful meals.

    10WaiPosted on: 2-18-2025

Food was excellent! View from room was mesmerizing! Outdoor onsen was beautiful albeit somewhat small compared to other resorts.

Duvet - too hot non-breathable material. Can’t be under duvet for too long as it gets really hot. And can’t stay uncovered for too long as it gets too cold (although we didn’t turn on the heater as we didn’t like sleeping with the heater switched on). Perhaps resort should consider using a better duvet or provide a thinner option

    7JustinPosted on: 2-3-2025

Great view of the river from room, private onsen bath in room, pretty comfortable beds.

Unable to set temperature to cool room - heater function only. Staff could be more friendly and welcoming. Onsen water was not hot enough.

Beautiful location, facilities, wonderful private onsen and little perks throughout. Fantastic restaurant staff. It is a really wonderful place to stay with fantastic food and fun little things to engage with. Close to Akanko by car. There are 3 private baths downstairs and you don't need to book them, just check if they're available. There's also a nice bath in the room.

To avoid this situation please let them know well in advance if you have any dietary needs. Reception staff made me feel awful about being vegetarian. Throughout this stay it was presumed I couldn't understand Japanese so I understood her complaints right in front of us. My husband can't understand Japanese and he said the body language and sighing were clearly complaints anyway. We are staying in many places on this trip with meals included but this was the only time I felt awful about being vegetarian. She asked if we would like dinner and that's when I said, and she said it won't be possible. As for breakfast she made a point of complaining to a colleague beside her (who didn't engage with the complaints) before calling the restaurant staff and asking. The result was fine, I was allowed to eat breakfast, although there was no choice between western and Japanese style like my husband. The food was superb! But the attitude about the situation made me feel awful and could have been kinder.

We live the hot spring and the facilities. The public one at the basement was awesome plus we got our own at our room. It was perfect for a tiring day. Coffee beans and grinder were provided at the room, and we made our own coffees while enjoying the views to the snow. Free ramens and yogurt were free to grab.

The water at the reserved bath were not warm.

Location, room, food, facility, and staff. I would give 11 star if I can. We love our room number 1110. The view is amazing. The bed is super comfortable.

excellent location in the mid of the forest, many views of deers at night in front of the hotel roomphantastic views on rivergreat Japanese food, great servicelarge roommassage chairvery nice environment

Fresh air into the room as all windows you could open were very low so that cold air could only reach your feet

    10LiPosted on: 10-13-2024

Perfectly situated in the tranquil banks of the Akan River away from the most touristy lodgings by the lake. In room bath is a bonus for those crowd adverse even if it was a bit tiny for anyone above 6ft. Riverview rooms is a must! How can you travel all the way here to scrimp a few dollars but sacrifice the wondrous experience living by a flowing river?Sumptuous spread of food despite some of the negative reviews - only meal that could do better was dinner from the first night (sorry you one-nighters). Stayed a total of 3 nights and the food thereafter is nowhere inferior to ryokans elsewhere.

The rooms are already set to heating even though it was a hotter than usual autumn, you can see that this place is going to be so cosy in the deep of the winter. Driving is a must to get here but it is very much worth it.

    9DuanePosted on: 10-9-2024

Stunning views, superb dining, comfortable facilities, responsive staff.

Could not control the heat in the room. It was uncomfortably hot.

    9RickyPosted on: 10-7-2024

Amazing location and exceptional fine dining at the restaurant. The restaurant staff were very friendly, and some spoke enough English to help explain the menu and the operation of the multiple courses. Eating here was a very good experience. Multiple onsens, free ice cream, free massage chair, clean and comfortable room with amazing view of the river.

Although the place is fabulous and the dining is exceptional, it is still a lot of money to pay for a 1 night stay.

    9AnthonyPosted on: 9-26-2024

Facility, was unexpectedly modern with rustic flavor, great room, setting, cleanliness. Little added amenities like onsen ice cream and juices are excellent touches!!

Couch in room., sagged. Staff with no flex, first down breakfast, but assigned beforehand to less view table.. Dinner 6/10. Breakfast good Japanese, too little for Western. Self-help coffee is a bit of a pain... But, overall an excellent!
