About

Renovated in 2014, Kazeya overlooks the majestic Hida mountain range, and offers public and private hot spring-baths. The quiet ryokan features authentic Japanese architecture, spacious rooms with a Japanese interior and free WiFi, while facilities include a garden and free-use bicycles. Free parking is on site. Guests at Kazeya can unwind in public hot-spring baths or a hot public bath, while 3 types of private hot-spring are also available free of charge. Massages can be arranged. The ryokan offers luggage storage, and it has drinks vending machines. Rooms have a tatami (woven-straw) floor, a low table with seating cushions and either Western beds or Japanese futon bedding. All rooms offer garden and mountain views, and come with a private bathroom. They’re fitted with a flat-screen TV, a refrigerator and a safe. Kazeya is a 10-minute drive from the Shin-Hodaka Ropeway Station, and a 1-hour drive from Takayama Station. The property is a 2-minute walk from bus stop Shin-Hodaka Onsenguchi. A one-dish dinner is available upon request, which will be complemented by several side dishes. Although the main dish is selected by the chef, guests can order hida-beef as their main at an extra cost. Guests can also choose to reserve a hida-beef full course meal at a charge.

    Pros +

    • The onsen
    • The room was spacious and comfortable. The location is unbeatable. It is a fairly remote part of the Japanese Alps, however we received an extremely detailed and helpful message from the host telling us which bus to take to get there. Delicious Hida Beef dinner, Multiple onsen. I left a scarf if Kyoto and the manager was really kind and helpful in calling and helping me retrieve it. Extra effort for sure. We were a short bus ride away from the Shinhotaka Ropeway. This place is very remote, there is no where to eat lunch or any general stores, you will need to pack up or take a bus to a nearby store, I recommend going to Shinhotaka Ropeway for lunch.
    • The room was nice and spaciouse.

    Cons -

    • The private indoor onsen was close for renovation. But that is understandable.
    • Tha facility is a little too old.Sign in English a little hidden and small.
    • Really far from anything if you don’t have a car

Nice experience! The onsens were really nice!Great food! Hida beef was amazing.

Little insects all over the hotel, also in the room.

The receptionist acted like a pushy used-car salesman, only interested in upselling extras instead of providing any real hospitality. The entire hotel was bug-infested — and when I mentioned it, he said it was “normal.” Maybe, but there were dead bugs everywhere, clearly there for days. Our room was full of them too, and the “solution” we were given was a roll of packaging tape to pick them up ourselves. We spent our first two hours at this so-called “excellent ryokan experience” collecting dead bugs instead of relaxing, only to finally head down to the onsen and be welcomed by that run-down bath area, which was just as neglected as the rest of the place. When we complained about the state of our room, the receptionist said he will come clean the room when he has time, but cleaning is something that should be done before guests check in, not as a favor afterwards and anyway we already did the work. The whole place felt like it existed only to milk money out of unsuspecting foreign tourists without providing the most basic standards of Japanese hospitality.Strongly recommend avoiding this hotel!

    Staff are friendly and helpful.

The room is clean but we had several bugs and spiders visiting us. Perhaps expected in the mountain side but I wish I knew beforehand. The place had mold in several places . The pillows were basically non existing (very thin). The breakfast is very much local, not very suited to the western taste.

The onsen was nice and the private onsen had free access. The staff was also very welcoming

The carpets were very dirty, the room had a bad smell, and the beds were pretty uncomfortable. The kaiseki dinner was overpriced and pretty disappointing

I didn’t like it and suggest not to go there

Dirty, run down, broken facilities and bad food

The meals were spectacular. The onsen was wonderful.

The AC was not as strong on very hot days. The rooms were a bit worn.

Great traditional Ryokan. Comfortable rooms and we got a free upgrade to a room with a private onsen - although the water was very hot. We also enjoyed visiting the indoor and outdoor private and public onsens too - water more of a comfortable temperature in those. We upgraded our dinner to have the full Hida beef set menu which was delicious and we also had a wonderful traditional breakfast too. Easy to get to via bus, just check the bus schedule for timings.

Some areas are a little old and worn but this didn't detract from the experience for us.

Good sized rooms with plenty of shared space in the ryokan. A mix of public and private onsens to accommodate all guests. We traveled with a 1 year old and it was perfect for our family. Loved the traditional food and authenticity of the hotel.

For US$200 per night in so called "4-star hotel" we had no help with luggage, no room service, the toothbrush as the only amenity, the hanging  pijamas with no signs of being washed and ironed after previous guests, no slippers or socks, ripped blankets, the balls of dust in the restroom and super budget meals. The building was beautiful but all the beams were dusty. We have been charged for the meat we refused to eat: the cheapest fattest cuts. The public onsen was nice but not clean. Coffee capsule was for 100 yen. I was really happy to leave the place and felt sorry for the future guests. From the six places we stayed during our trip, this one was the only mistake: it had nothing close to Japanese standards of hospitality.

The room was perfect for a family of four, two being two teenage girls. Everyone had their own bed. The staff was excellent and ever gracious to our every request. The traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast was also a fun and tasty experience. The private Onsens were also calming, clean and truly private.

One of our room’s bathrooms was out of service but we had another one so only a minor inconvenience.

Very nice experience. Excellent private onsen and meals. Very big room. The only small issue was the pillows.: too small.

    Staff were very accommodating.

    10RebeccaPosted on: 5-19-2025

We loved how this hotel felt truly rustic, not a chain or fancy place. It was a super relaxing area with nothing around to distract you! We also love that the meals are served privately and we got to enjoy by ourselves! The best part was all the Onsens. We loved the private ones and the public ones were really big.

There are no stores around so bring any snacks if you want some!

    the location

I usually don't write reviews, but this time I had to do it. Kazeya was the worst place we have stayed so far in Japan. After hours of traveling by train and bus, we got to this place hoping we'll have a relaxing day in the onsen and enjoy our evening. What a huge disappointment! This is a run-down hotel, a reap off, please do NOT stay there. Never stayed in a worse place for the price we paid at Kazeya. For $250, we got a place that has that stench of old, the shower wall and shower door has mold, the so-called tatami beds are 2 rock-hard regular mattresses thrown on the floor instead of the traditional tatami beds advertised by Kazeya, the pillows are 2 cushions that I had to cover with my own t-shirt to be able to sleep because of the smell. I was able to sleep only 4 interrupted hours due to discomfort. I wouldn't have complained about the back pain I woke up in the morning with if I had slept in a tatami bed because that's what we came for, but why would I pay to sleep on a mattress on the floor that broke my back, hips and shoulders instead of a nice comfy bed? To use the safe in the room, you have to pay 100 yen (never heard of or seen this in my life and I have traveled extensively to way much poorer countries). They make you take your shoes off at the entrance, but the carpet on the hallways was dirtier than my shoes I wore outside. The outside public onsen is OK, but the indoor ones have rotten wood. Food was acceptable - we had breakfast and dinner. Initially they wanted to charge me extra 6600 yen for a single meal of Hida beef instead of 2000 yen as they asked for first. I had to bring this mistake to their attention. No water bottle provided in the room. At 9 pm, the whole entire place shuts down. Honestly, I wished I didn't step my foot in this place, let alone spent 1 cent here
