THE MACHIYA HOTEL TAKAYAMA

We loved this small hotel! The station and all the Takayama attractions we wanted to see were within walking distance. Our room was spacious, comfortable and quiet. The breakfasts were fantastic - we tried all 3 options, all delicious and filling. The staff went above and beyond - when my husband needed to work in the common area for most of one day, they brought him complimentary drinks, fruit and treats. The front desk is full service - arranging taxis, making restaurant reservations etc. We highly recommend both private consens - a great way to relax after a full day of sightseeing. The reasonably priced washer and dryer were a welcome amenity mid-way through our trip!

We liked everything about this place!

We stayed in the family suite which was set up perfectly for a family of 4. Plenty of space for the kids to sleep and spread out. My favorite part was the lounge with great jazz music and coffee/teas. I could have spent all day there. Breakfast was delicious with both traditional and western options to choose from. Super helpful staff always sweet and willing to help. The onsite laundry was a huge benefit. Also loved the private onsen bookable for a reasonable price.

Beautiful but disappointing.

We were placed in a distant house that was badly laid out and badly heated.

The staff were very attentive, helpful and gracious, which truly made it feel like a boutique hotel. The lounge/common area had a very nice feel which made it very conducive to linger over breakfast, have a tea, or simply relax.

Beautifully decorated with lots of attention to detail.The staff went above and beyond to make us happy and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and the coffee and tea service was very nice. Beds were comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean.

There is nothing that we didn’t like about the property or the staff.

Beautifully designed, the room had everything you can dream of, the reception was super helpful. Location was excellent and the breakfast was to die for.

The location is very good, the personnel was excellent. I requested a change of room and they were very gracious about it. The new room was much better!

The lighting system was a little complicated. But all else was very good

The hotel is wonderful, the lounge includes a buffet and very cozy spaces to read and relax. There is the possibility to book a private onsen (for an extra fee). The room was clean, spacious, fully equipped and in full japanese style. We highly recommend staying here. Plus, the staff was extremely helpful and kind!

The room was quite skinny so not a lot of places for bags. But otherwise lovely.

We were happy to have stayed here during the Spring Festival. Our room was a Japanese style room with tatami flooring. The guest room was decent in size and comfortable. The oriental style dual roller shade in the room was a nice feature. The staff were attentive and friendly. It would be more than perfect if slippers could be provided in the vestibule and toilet area of the room.

Great location that was close to the festival that was happening while we stayed here! The rooms were large and updated.

We had to move rooms because people were stomping and running around so incredibly loud upstairs. The staff were very kind about it and asked us if we wanted to move, but we were woken up before 6am because of the noise. You also had to pay extra for onsen which wasn’t our experience at any other hotel, but it was nice that my husband and I could go together.

We stayed in the Hanare Machiya home. It was so spacious and comfortable. Since there was only two of us, we chose to sleep in the tatami room where the floor was heated and the beds were very comfortable to sleep on. I loved the large dining table and the balcony on the river. The large furo bath is so relaxing. Location was great, surrounded by so many shops and cafes.

We didn’t know the home was a ten minute walk from the main reception/hotel and so instead of reserving the parking they had next to reception, we went to park nearby the Machiya home. Luckily there are a lot of parking lots close by but I think if the hotel chooses to have buildings far from reception, they should have designated parking spots for guests that are included in the stay and right where the homes are. Wasn’t a huge inconvenience for us and still really enjoyed the entire stay.

Location was convenient and appreciated that they stored our luggage the morning of checkout so we could enjoy the local market. We enjoyed the self-service tea counter and the breakfast. Rooms were comfortable and spacious.

Bath was small and felt claustrophobic and water temp was too hot.

The accommodation gave us the chance to experience a bit of traditional Japan. Breakfast was amazing The room was comfortable Staff were fantastic, polite and very helpful. The onsen spa was very relaxing and high quality. The location was ideal to be able to access the local area.
