About
Some places just feel different the moment you arrive. Dickson Holiday Park is one of them. Tucked into five acres of native bush on the edge of Thames, this is a place people come back to year after year — not because it ticked a box, but because it gave them something they didn't expect to find. Quiet. Space. The sound of a stream and birdsong instead of traffic. A reminder of what a proper break actually feels like. The park has been welcoming guests for over 60 years. Today, owners Elena and Matthias run it with the same care it's always had — personal, unhurried, and genuinely warm. They live on-site and know this land well. That shows in the details: the gardens, the upkeep, the way guests are looked after. Rated 9.6 by couples on Booking.com. That score doesn't happen by accident. Location Dickson Holiday Park sits five minutes from Thames town center — close enough to everything, far enough to feel like you've properly escaped. Thames is the gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula. From here you can drive to Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, the Coromandel township, and the Pinnacles — or you can stay put, walk the Kauaeranga Valley trails, explore the goldfields history, and eat well at the local cafés and restaurants along Pollen Street. It's a genuine basecamp for the region, without the tourist-town prices or crowds. The park itself borders native bush and a running stream. Tūī, fantails, and kererū visit daily. In the evenings, the only noise is the bush settling in. Accommodations Self-Contained Flats The park's most popular option, and easy to see why. Four private, fully self-contained flats set among the trees — each with their own kitchen, bathroom, and living space. Quiet, comfortable, and built for people who want to properly unwind. Couples consistently rate these as a highlight of their stay. Cabins Solid, comfortable, and well-maintained. A practical base for those who want covered accommodations without the full self-contained setup. Share access to the park's excellent communal facilities. Powered Sites Spacious, level, and set within the bush surroundings. Full power hookups with easy access to the amenities block. A favorite with returning campers who've been coming here for years. Tent Sites Back-to-basics camping done properly. Pitch up under the trees, fall asleep to the stream, wake up to birds. Simple, clean, and genuinely beautiful. Facilities -Full modern amenities block — showers, toilets, laundry -Well-equipped communal kitchen and dining area -BBQ area -Children's playground -Native bush trails directly from the property -Stream running through the grounds -On-site owners available throughout your stay -Free parking -Pet-friendly options available (inquire on booking) Who Stays Here Couples come for the privacy and the peace — and they give it a 9.6 rating to prove it. Families come for the space, the playground, and the freedom to let kids run. Travelers exploring the Coromandel use it as a home base, heading out each day and coming back to something that genuinely feels restful. A lot of guests book once. Most book again. A Note From Elena and Matthias "We've put a lot of love into this place — the gardens, the grounds, the little details you notice when you slow down enough to look. We live here, so we're always around if you need anything. We just want people to leave feeling like they actually rested. That's the whole point." Booking Flats, cabins, powered sites, and tent sites available year-round. Check availability and book directly through this listing. Questions welcome — Elena and Matthias respond personally and promptly. Dickson Holiday Park. Three and a half acres of native bush. Sixty years of good memories. Five minutes from Thames. Please note Showers take $1.00 coins.

- Motor camp.stayed in dirty caravan ants crawling sticky floor ,three spiders and cobwebs.dirty cupboards and dishes,no privacy shrunken see threw curtains the list goes on very disappointed
- I just needed somewhere to sleep at a cheap price
- I've been to this park before and I love the location. I stayed with a family member in the female backpacker dorm.
Cons -
- All of above.wanted cabin tald none available only expensive caravan but I noticed several empty cabins over the three days.
- not really
- In comparison with other holiday parks, this one is in need of some maintenance. The female bathroom had showers out of order. The toilet nearest our cabin smelled terrible. Our cabin steps were rotting a year ago and still no repair. The price was reasonable but why charge for the showers. It was a very short 5 minutes and the lady in the one next to me missed out after putting her coin in and nothing happened.

Reception staff very polite and efficient
Extremely populated facilities with camper vans everywhere, including carpark.
It was cute and a nice green environment everything looked nice. Kitchen was well equipped
It was so light. There where several light directly into our caravan and only very light curtains that didn't blind the light and both me and my friend had a lot of problems sleeping. Also because of the light thw curcadas started shirping at 3am already, because they where confused about the light and it was so noisy. So overall we didn't enjoy our stay very much.
Good money valueGreat camping like experience. Staff is very helpful. Great location.
Its was family friendly, our caravan was awesome! Pool and river makes everything easy when is kids on you crew, but also if you follow the river up on your car, its there some amazing treasure swimming and bombing spots.
Love everything
4-bunk women’s dorm was comfortable with nice amenities included in the room. Lots of birds in the area and a hike on the premises
Great location Good value for money Staff helpful
Everything. Good location. Great facilities. Decent size camper vans.

Place were very clean, shower were okay but beds were hard my boys said
Nothing we don't like
Loved the little caravan and the location.
Paying for a shower. It’s a holiday park not a roadhouse.
Me and my family really enjoy our fet away. It was peaceful for us. My kids enjoy the pool. We like it because it's not far to the town center. Office lady were very nice and help us with our booking. The cleaning lady were very polite and friendly and she done a good job. We love the flowers over the place. We will come back another time.
We didn't expect to pay for the hot water in the shower but it's still ok for $1 to 5mins.
It was a wonderful stay.and close to town and our bungalow was awesome will come back for another but longer next time hopefully 2026 Christmas day
Nothing to dislike
The bungalow that we booked was very comfortable with firm beds. It was very clean and functional, and the staff were helpful and friendly. The Internet speed was good as well. The location of the Holiday Park is quite convenient, few minutes drive from the town centre. Definitely value for money. Great family vacation spot.
Nothing really.
Quiet and reasonable cost
Very Very small things, no plastic bowls ( couldn't cook in microwave) Nowhere to hang / dry towels
Beds were awesome not the best mattress in the world but a mattress nonetheless. You get what you pay for and more in this case with a superbly equipped kitchen lovely grounds a free use pool nice area for drying stuff and borderline luxury bunk room. There also a games room were you can ask for the equipment (free of charge) from the lovely receptionists who looked after my bags when I went on the pinnacles hike after checking out. The tv room has some good reading aswell. There’s a lovely river to sit by as you eat or a good set of benches with a nice view by the kitchen. One of my best stays in north island without a doubt was lovely to take the afternoon off here.
Location was a bit far from town however, I am a solo traveller without a car and had to walk. Most would find it perfect. Could also do with a washing machine (I’m not sure they might have one).
Family-friendly holiday space with so much to do. Highly recommended
Great value, quality service, and staff are so helpful.
This was our second time staying in the 1 bedroom cabin. It has all the amenities you need. The staff are absolutely fantastic and the surrounding environment is really lovely. Although the cabin is aging, we had all we needed and a cosy place to call home for the night. We will come back again for sure.
We really enjoyed our one-night stay — the location was perfect, with shops, beaches, and the rock pool all nearby. The park was clean, peaceful, and had a great atmosphere. We loved it so much we didn’t want to leave.
The only small downside was a few bugs coming in from outside, maybe some insect spray in the room would help. Otherwise, everything was great, and we’d definitely come back for a longer stay next time.
