Pros +
- We loved everything about the Gardeners Cottage. So much thought has been put in to the decor that is fitting for a heritage cottage. The slow combustion fire warmed the whole cottage, the bed was very comfortable & the linen was beautiful. Was very peaceful with gorgeous views but was only 5 minutes drive to Longford for dinner.
- Cottage and rural feel
- The sitting room with a fireplace. Thorough information about preparing by bring food with me from Longford.
Cons -
- We didn’t have enough time to enjoy! We arrived in the dark, so just a bit tricky to find our cottage.
- I wasn’t sure if I was free to walk around and enjoy the grounds and main house.
- If you book the cottage, you have access to the estate as part of the deal - great! But, for goodness sake, put a gate in the hedge for the gardener's cottage so the occupants can wander straight into the rose garden instead of having to access from the back entrance 200m away! It's the only cottage located well away from the rest of the historic buildings.Poor cottage is looking tired on the outside & needs a fix & a paint. It could also do with a hardy "english" garden to give it that "gardeners" vibe. Need to capitalize more on the history & "chocolate box" appeal this cottage could have. How about it bit more information on the history of the property. These types of places are usually booked by people interested in the historic background.

Bed was comfy & warm enough for a cold Tasmanian night. Fire worked well & warmed the space well whilst it was going. Bathroom upgrade is excellent.

We loved the coziness and immersion in preserved history; the feeling of welcome & belonging; the grounds & spectacular gardens; the written family & farming history. Very comfy beds. Such a unique & rich experience..
We didn’t see anyone from the time we arrived until we left. The whole place was shut up and we had difficulty finding the key and the actual “house”. The bridge was closed but we didn’t realise there was nowhere to eat within a 20 minute drive because you couldn’t get into Longford. After driving all day we didn’t want to go back out and have to come back in the dark with the wildlife and no lights on the property. We didn’t see any of the attractions on the property which was why we went there. The accommodation was unique and comfortable but we left very disappointed with the experience.
Quiet - no traffic noiseRose garden and gallery
Nothing - perfect
Great location within the grounds of the historical Woolmers Estate. As part of the stay I was able to take a self guided tour of the estate (self guide tour booklet provided with keys from the pin coded lock box). I did this in the late afternoon and felt like the only person for miles...loved it, was very peaceful. I stayed in the Head Gardner's Cottage which has been kept in its original configuration (with modern amenities of course). Very cosy, very comfortable. Fireplace in reception/lounge of cottage was set up and ready to light, with plenty of firewood available. Free wifi was fast and reliable, I was able to stream youtube in HD and 4K without buffering. Welcome message and chocolates on the kitchen table was a nice touch. All in all, highly recommend this stay if you want to explore Australia's colonial history in comfort and style. If you just explore the cottage you'll absorb some excellent history.
These are just minor suggestions for facilities value adds noting I would definitely stay here again. I self catered and couldn't use the fry pans as they were non-stick (Teflon / PFAS / forever chemicals that I go to great lengths to avoid), stainless/cast/ceramic non-stick pans would be awesome. Also, the smart TV wasn't connected/connectable to the internet (capable but not connectable), be great to have this to watch favourite streaming services (watched them on my phone using the free wifi), minor observation but good value add.
The cosy rooms with firewood for the fire.
Not many selections for teas etc...lack of personal touch.
The cottage was lovely and in a beautiful spot. We were able to walk around the estate in the late afternoon which was also nice. Great to have cooking facilities. Great shower.Amazing sunset on our walk.
The step down into the bathroom might need a small night light at night to remind people of the step?
One must bear in mind that the Coachman's cottage in which we stayed for 3 nights was built C1830 so it may not be comfortable for some eg., stairs will be difficult for the handicapped. However, most people come here for the experience of what our forebears encountered. This is what got plus the bonus of exploring the extensive grounds, other heritage buildings, additional tours and an Information centre complete with art exhibition and cafe.
Nothing really. Maybe a magnificent rooster who decides 4.00am is a good time to wake up.
The history of the site is wonderful. The cottages are clean, very quiet and quaint. We recommend taking the guided tour of the house. Excellent.
All good, but levelling the beds on an uneven floor would be good
The history of the Estate. We liked the self-guide booklet. The chicken and roosters, the rose garden. The bathroom was clean and water hot. The bed was comfortable.
The insects that found their way into the house, especially the beetles that came in from the gaps in the floor/door. The cottage was old so you would expect creaks, but the stairs were dreadfully noisy, especially as the bathroom was downstairs. The curtains and blinds were very dusty. Tasmania is very dry but the weeds around the cottage and grass could have been tidied. We were not aware on booking that the restaurant and house tours would not be available Mon - Tues when we stayed. Guests should be warned to bring bottled water.
Absolutely beautiful property. Loved the heritage.
There was a rat/possum in the roof above our head that kept us awake all night.
I did not stop there because Booking.com made a complete balls-up of the event. They sent me a confirmation message then two hours later I got a call from the property to say they couldn’t understand how I’d booked a room because they didn’t have the room free. I was then left to cancel the room and find somewhere else. The cancellation was anything but easy and then Booking.com threatened me with a cancellation fee. I have spoken to the property who say they will not charge, but nothing at all from Booking.com, just this request for my feedback. It’s been stressful and lots of time wasted.
They did not have a vacancy so I didn’t stay there.
Area is quite historic and staying is worth that experience. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the house as my arrival didn’t line up with the tours. The rose garden at the time of year I arrived didn't have many roses in bloom.Staff are very pleasant and helpful (though it was odd that one didn't know if a structure marked on the map provided to guests for the self guided tour could actually be reached from/on the property.)Accommodation clean, comfortable and contains what you need. Kitchen contains what one needs for basic meal preparation.
The poor factors in the accommodation (I had booked the Blacksmith Cottage) were:(a) the fire alarm in the lounge room (directly underneath the bedroom) made irregularly timed but constant noises from late afternoon all through the night and the next morning. The caretaker was super efficient at arriving and trying to stop the noise but was unable to do so. This presented an annoyance and sleep problem. So the "solution" was for me to sleep in another bedroom in another premises but not otherwise use the other rooms in the other premises and to use the lounge room, bathroom and kitchen but not the bedroom in the premises that I had been booked in for. Not that I could do much in a loungeroom where the fire alarm was constantly going off. This was a major drawback.(b) you can't drink water from the tap- it has to be boiled but they do supply 10 litres of water in a plastic camp bottle. Not really an issue unless you drink a lot or are a large party.(c) the door lock is "old style" and takes some time (=struggle) getting used to to be able to operate it from outside the house.
Nice for a historical accommodation.
No place to sit outside the cottage if one wanted to spend some time relaxing there. Only one picnic table for 4 cottages and no outside chairs.
The position was beautiful on the Woolmers estate
It was very remote on the estate and the locks insecure. The cottage was functional. The stars were amazing.
It was so lovely staying in a little colonial cottage. It was immaculate and the rose garden was so lovely.
Better provisions for cooking our own food, such as basics like olive oil, and more cutlery, a good knife, utensils and extra wine glasses.
The rose garden was nice.
No water on arrival in the house, obvious no one had checked the property that day. Moved to another house with cobwebs over the bath/shower (so also not recently cleaned). No amenities other than basics (towels provided and tea/coffee).No staff or cafe available on Mondays and Tuesdays (not told this until enquiring about breakfast options just before staying) and this also means you can’t take advantage of the self-guided tour as you can only view the outside of the buildings.More information before booking would be good!
