The General Kyoto Shijou Shinmachi

The hotel was very clean and the room was very comfortable. They had all the amenities we needed. the staff was very courteous and friendly. I loved the traditional room style. The breakfasts were delicious. The lounge hours with the happy hour, green tea on the weekends, and great snacks were much appreciated.

The closet space is very limited. Would have been nice to have more hangers and shelves. But we were able to manage.

The location is very convenient and the design of the hotel is modern and nice. We liked being able to use the lounge.

The room and hallway carpets need to be cleaned. There were spots in various places. Room safes should be big enough to fit a laptop. They are quite small.

Right in the middle of an excellent location. Main shopping area a short walk away and tons of neat restaurants all around. A small common area that provided free drinks and snacks was invaluable after a long day of sightseeing. The bathroom, while small, felt like a 5-star hotel. I could rate this higher. A hidden gem!

Two minor quibbles. First the signage for the hotel outside was so understated, the taxi driver couldn't find it. Second, the window was frosted so one could not see outside. Light entered but it was impossible to tell what the weather was like.

Loved the vibes, kinda giving old Japanese style though it’s very modern and comfortable. Also, there is a lounge where you can grab something to eat/drink and it’s open till 22:00, it was super nice and comfortable. The hotel staff is so kind and helpful. Absolutely loved this hotel!!

I loved everything about it, but I will say the one of the staff members at the counter was a little inexperienced. She was very kind but her English was not the best and she didn’t have much knowledge about the area.

Modern, clean, design, space

Exceptional staff, spacious rooms and a delightful breakfast made our stay at the General Shijou Shinmachi a win win! The staff really went out of their way to make our stay a great experience making it possible for us to make the most of our time in Kyoto. I would definitely stay again and would encourage others to do so too!

My wife and I absolutely loved this hotel. It was our favorite of all the hotels we stayed at on our trip. Their guest service was fantastic. I love their little guest lounge. We stayed in a Japanese style room. Hotel room very pretty and spacious. The location of the hotel was perfect. Very close to some very good restaurants, Kyoto Pokemon center and Train station. We plan on staying here again on our next trip to Japan!

Good location near shopping and restaurantsSubway nearby. Main train station about 30 minute walk but not far by taxi. Room was nice although windows were opaque. Nice lounge for a few snacks. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Hotel spotless and comfortable.

The room size was good and comfortable, with enough space for luggage. The shower was nice, and the snacks in the lounge were a good touch (though they run out quickly). The location is excellent for transportation (bus&train station), and while it’s a bit far (about 20 mins walk) from the Pontocho - ‘nightlife’ area, it’s still walkable.

The windows were frosted, as is common in many Kyoto hotels, which didn’t bother us, but the curtain wasn’t working properly. There were no water bottles or tea provided in the room, and the bed was quite too firm to us. Also, there are only two laundry machines, which isn’t really enough during busy hours.

The breakfast was delicious and varied each day. They use the lounge for an extra common space for guests with complimentary drinks available all day. Great touch!

The beds are classic Japanese style, so a little hard for us. But that is the only thing to not like about The General!

Everything!! It is the best stay I have had in years. The stuff is always prompt to help, the hotel is extremely clean and there are amenities I have never seen before in a hotel such as a hair straightener and curler. Oh and they have a lounge where you can a get a free coffee or refreshment and snacks!

Though not the most luxurious accommodations, the value for quality exceeded expectations. Modern amenities highly appreciated by my American encultured adult children. Location central to many excursions. Highly recommend!

Friendly staff, lounge access, good location, and most of all the facilities were clean and relatively new. Very comfortable beds. Also liked that we can walk to a variety of restaurants within a few blocks of the hotel.

We are so pleasantly surprised by how clean, upscale, comfortable, and beautiful this hotel was. They even have a lounge with free drinks and snacks during the day which we thought was such a sweet addition the rooms are very clean, Bright, spacious and comfortable. they also have laundry facilities on site which was such a helpful aspect. This was definitely the best hotel we stayed at in Japan and will definitely be back, as well as recommend it to all our friends.
