    Pros +

    • Location
    • Despite its authentic-looking decor, the experience felt curated for tourists rather than local life
    • All the facilities are super clean. The architect designed the interior very nicely with old Japanese furniture, traditional Ryokan interiors with practical modern touches. The staff could speak multiple languages and were very helpful. We decided to stay a day longer, and they made sure that we didn't have to swap the room. Very welcoming atmosphere. To be able to reserve a time for a private Japanese style bathroom was also great.

    Cons -

    • Was not full service
    • The hotel has a charming, traditional aesthetic, though it’s clearly designed with tourists in mind rather than offering a lived-in local experience. Stayed in a Japanese-Style Superior Room and the room size is on the cozy side, which may be something to keep in mind if you’re traveling with luggage or staying multiple nights.

Exceptional guest services, overwhelming helpful staffGreat location to attraction spots throughout Kyoto, conveniently a few minutes away from Hankyu Kyoto line, highly recommended!

The room was very clean and comfortable, and our teenage kids surprisingly slept extremely well on the futons. This property had a feeling of traditional Japan while also having modern conveniences (A/C, good plumbing and water pressure, etc). The staff here is absolutely amazing, and made us feel like true guests instead of just another customer.

Walk to public transportation was about 10 minutes, which in the extreme heat during our stay was a little overwhelming.

Location was great. This gave us an authentic Japanese experience. Everything was wonderful and the staff was friendly and welcoming.

The floors did have an odor that wasn’t great but we adjusted

The staff were extremely friendly. The room was very nice and the hotel was kept clean. There was an option for breakfast in the morning, which was very good and there were many other amenities that could be rented. The hotel staff were very accommodating and offered recommendations and could book events if needed.

A very small con was that it was a small walk to the metro which was rough in the summer heat but the hotel was worth it

Beautiful building and room, great location and very professional staff. We stayed in one of the fifth floor “townhouse” rooms, with a step chest leading to an upper sitting room, which was great for working without disturbing my daughter traveling with me. When we were leaving, there was a small, unfamiliar charge for laundry that wasn’t ours; they removed it with no questions asked.

The futon was quite thin and uncomfortable compared to those we’ve slept on in other ryokans during this trip (and this was the most costly stay). The internet speed and latency was quite bad, with speeds averaging only about 10 to 20 Mbps (per Otka) and sometimes dropping my VPN connection, making the simple business functions I needed to do time consuming and a hassle; the connection using my phone’s hotspot via cellular was better. My laptop let me know that the Wi-Fi security was outdated as well, and suggested I switch networks.

The hotel is beautiful and is conveniently located cyclist to restaurants and main attractions, including Gion. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room and loved the experience. The staff was very friendly.

    7hirokoPosted on: 1-19-2026

Good location, be able to get to main street easy. Japanese breakfast had taste of Kyoto.

I like it most of things, but one things I thought that is they had a little too much Japan. Every rooms had different japanese sight , but I did not feel the simple, peaceful side of japan from their settings.

Staff were so friendly and helpful. This location is close walking distance to the market and many other sites. Clean and comfortable.

Very happy and friendly staff, extras around the hotel very affordable. Sleeping on the floor was a new experience. But fun!

Garbage pick up was a bit annoying in the room

Room was clean, breakfast was satisfying and delicious.

I liked this location. No complaints

The hotel staff was nice, and they offered laundry services for an extra cost. The location was great, as it was walkable to all the things I wanted to see.

The room was spacious and very affordable for the accommodations. Staff was friendly and helpful :)

We really liked the style of the Ryokan - quite unique! The staff was great, we loved the location and we appreciated the private bath!

It was quite difficult (and painful) to sleep on the mattresses on the floor. We did sign up for it, but we were surprised by how thin the mattresses were.

Great locationStaff is nice and attentiveEverything is clean and kept clean

Pillows in Japanese hotels are pretty uncomfortable everywhereShower pressure was great but shower could have gotten hotter

This facility was fanastic! The staff were kind and very helpful. Our room was beautiful. The entire facility was beautiful. The craftsmanship that went into this hotel was amazing. We were within walking distance of the Nishiki Market, the Bukko-ji Temple, Gion Minamigawa, Maruyama Park, Ryozen Museum, etc. There was so much to do and see near this ryokan. And there were plenty of restaurants close by.

I stayed here many years ago when this ryokan was a much smaller property. Having said that, the owners have done an impressive job of retaining the spirit of the original place. The reception staff were always on hand to assist in anyway possible. I recommend trying the traditional Japanese breakfast....it won't disappoint! We booked in for the Sake Tasting hosted by expert Jason, and thoroughly enjoyed the knowledge and experience. At first, the ryokan appears to be located in a quiet street with not many food choices, however the staff gave us a local map to assist us in finding places to eat, convenience stores, etc. We stayed at the ryokan for five nights and had deliciously prepared food within easy walking distance each evening. Try Kyoto Shijo Bar Shinse, Kanegura (shabu shabu across the street), Aiyo Shijo Takakura (Izakaya), Ikkakuju Karasuma (Okonomyaki), and Nakashimaya (Obanzai).

The TV is too small and there are no international channels. The junior suite is large enough to have soft comfortable chairs, instead of hard timber chairs and a useless chaise lounge.

Room was spacious and stuff for extremely friendly. The futons were comfortable in the bathroom was also very clean.

A bit of a walking distance to the nearest train station. It was really only 10 minutes away, but when you’re tired from walking around all day having a hotel close to the train station makes a difference.
