    Pros +

    • Location
    • It was close to Nishiki Market and many restaurants and shops. The room was clean and tidy. The sento in the basement was wonderful, just the right temperature of water. The staff was helpful and welcoming.
    • The kindness of the staff and location.

    Cons -

    • Many things: run down; dirty; people smoking everywhere; charge for small children but they only get their own bed if on top of that charge (not sure it's purpose as not a meal charge) you pay an additional charge.
    • I realized I am too old to be sleeping on a futon, I probably needed a bed.
    • The hotel was a bit old

I liked the friendly staff and good location. The complimentary green tea and biscuits cookies were lovely.

I found the bedding uncomfortable, but I’m not used to sleeping on the floor and was glad to try it once.

Great location in Kyoto, we enjoyed staying in a traditional room with futons and tatami mats. Breakfast was good and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

The property felt quite tired and in need of a refresh. Our room was clean but the corridor carpet tiles were stained and there were some repairs needed eg to the plaster on the way to the breakfast room giving an overall sense of the property needing some love and attention given to it.

Location was good. That was the only positive.

We stayed 3 nights. The property was dirty, dated and uncomfortable. Walls were stained, and there was a musty smell in the room and the hallways. The place was very overpriced for the level of amenities and service. While staff were polite they were not particularly welcoming or helpful. We laid out our futons to accommodate our family and every day they were put back to the way the hotel wanted them, which did not work for us. Why? We were only given one key for 3 adults, when we requested an additional key we were told that was not possible. We did not dare use the Onsen, given what we saw in the hotel. Nor did we eat at the hotel. The location was good and it was a nice touch to get hot water for tea in the room.

There was a great breakfast place just across the street that was really the best part of this stay. Hotel seemed old and dirty and past its prime.

Cleanliness of the rooms, communication with hotel staff - we had several emails that went unanswered before we arrived. Felt really expensive for what we got.

The location was so convenient to the Nishiki Market, Sanjo-dori and the subways

    Nothing. It was perfect!

The room was nice and clean.

I thought dinner was included and was disappointed that it wasn't. If you're a solo traveller I would recommend somewhere more social.

Location was good next to Nishiki Market and local restaurants and cafes.

The property was very old which is understandable but very far from what you see in the pictures online. The staff did not speak a word in english which made communication a bit difficult. Overall it was okayish but definitely not worth the money.

Super nice staff, big and comfortable room, great amenities.

The nearest subway station is 15 minutes away, otherwise the location is good tho.

Typical traditionnal ryokan. The bed is adaptable with second couch if it's too rude. Kimono and tea include.

If you are a gaijin, you gonna have the gaijin room. And Tatami is not perfectly clean because Tatami could not be clean. So alway step with sock or clean shoes. I know that but if it's not said to other tourist, Tatami gonna have dirt. Personnal could explain this to help to keep the room clean.

The staff is sincerely kind and friendly. The ryokan has a superb location in my opinion. The room was very nice, although the ventilation shaft cover in the bathroom was broken, but that wasn't a big issue for me

Easy to reach, comfy rooms and beds, you really get to feel the japansese way and with the onsen and all.

I found it a little bit expensive. But still i found it worth it.

The front desk staff were lovely and helpful. Excellent location, walking distance from two train stations, the market, convenience stores and restaurants.

The futons were a little thin and hence not the most comfortable night’s sleep. For the room, the rate was over priced. It is Sakura season, but at almost $500 per night for a bare room, the value was lacking.

    8RichardPosted on: 3-20-2024

The room was spacious by Japanese standards, especially for the location. The location was excellent. Close to public transport and many interesting tourist attractions and great restaurants.

They could improve on cleanliness. We needed to stack several futures ns as they were too thin. Although the photos made this look like a traditional ryokan, it is more a small hotel with Japanese style rooms.

Kyoto Ryokan Hirashin is an older facility located within walking distance to Nishiki Market. It has large tatami rooms and a public furo/bath downstairs. Great experience but if you are not used to the bed on the floor, it may be hard for you. The shikibutons are hard, although I was fine with it. Think of them as exceptionally FIRM. Rooms had own toilet/tub shower. Good experience for the price. We paid for breakfast which was simple and meatless. Hotel let us keep our luggage there after 10:00 checkout so we could run around Kyoto without having to worry about them.

Only one card key per room no matter how many people are in there. The late night person just said "Japanese style" no matter what we asked and pretty much just shooed us off but others were very pleasant.

This is located very close to the local market. We should have booked a couple of nights here due to its location near the bus stop and Nishiki market.

I didn't receive any communication prior to check-in, despite sending some questions. This was also the only time that my main credit card didn't work in Japan, never found out why.
