    • Very cozy family run establishment. Beautifully designed rooms with eco consciousness. Ceramic bathtubs. Staff were a delight. Wonderful quiet walking neighborhood.
    • Location, cleanliness, friendliness of the staff
    • Staff was super friendly, welcoming and accommodating. There were little perks we appreciated, like fresh coffee beans and a pour-over system with the kitchenette, free bluetooth speaker, portable wifi device to take throughout the city, and Japanese bath salts for the luxurious tub.

    Cons -

    • Not the fault of Tanakaya, but there was construction happening outdoors, so having the window open during the daytime wasn't comfortable because of the noise. This was a small thing, and not a big deal at all.
    • A heating element in the bathroom would make it more comfortable while showering or taking a bath. The traditional bathtub is nice as you are able to soak your body but if you are tall 5'10"+ (which most Japanese are not), the bathtub is too small. a few inches bigger tub would have fit in the space. There is an electric cooktop in the room (also a microwave and fridge) but no idea what that is for as there are no pots or pans in the room. There aren't even spoons or bowls in the room although the description says kitchenware. We wanted to have some yogurt and granola before starting our days (as we left around 5:30-6 am) to try to beat the crowds. We asked for spoons/bowls and although they gave us some spoons they didn't have any bowls and told us we could buy them at the convenience store.

Hosts are extremely friendly and helpful. Place is very clean. The free wifi device to take along during the stay is a plus !!!. Coffee beans and tea is left in the room every day. Cookies on the first day. The room we picked had a washing machine which is nice while traveling for a long time. Overall it was a wonderful pick as it is peaceful and quiet inside while Kyoto is overcrowded with tourists.

Beds were comfortable. We chose the Japanese style room, with the low table and tatami mats, and that was very nice. Kitchen facilities were a small stove, a coffee maker, tea pot and water. The coffee was locally ground and was delicious every morning. Bathroom was good size, with the traditional tub that was a great soak after walking around Kyoto all day. Staff was helpful and friendly. It was a small hotel, only a few rooms, so not a big chain place. Exactly what we had hoped for. Room was pretty spacious, well lit and comfortable.

    Nothing - we loved it.

Honestly we loved everything about this hotel. They are so kind and always wanted to help. The beds are really comfy. We appreciated the two beds together that made one huge bed.

The only negative for us was the TV. The tv is not functional from the bed. You would have to go into the small room they have set up Japanese style with cushions on the floor. Beautiful room but would have loved the tv on the wall adjacent from bed. After being out all day it’s nice to chill with Netflix.

The rooms are beautiful with a nice touch of living space and bedroom space. The hotel and staff is very accommodating with things available to use at the front desk (portable wi-fi, aromatic oil infuser nad much more). Business is run by very competent and respectful people. They showed us great respect by staying there and helping with anything we needed. They went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of.

    I liked everything.

This hotel is perfect for a stay in Kyoto, especially if you don't want to be slightly away from the crowds, but still want to have easy access to sights. The rooms are spacious and have everything you need, including a washing machine, which is great for those traveling for a while. Fresh coffee beans and a drip is not something you often see at hotels - I loved this detail. Most important the staff are absolutely wonderful - you feel welcome from the moment you walk in.

The only area where I think there could be an improvement is housekeeping - it would be great if rooms were cleaned a little earlier in the day. However, this is a personal preference and a mere suggestion, and in no way diminishes the value of this wonderful hotel.

Great staff, very hospitable and helped us with luggage delivery. Strongly recommend Kaiseki dinners (and breakfast as well), works of art and explosion of flavors. Just note that you might not be able to finish everything in your Kaiseki dinner, there are at least 12-15 different items, :).

The room was very spacious. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and hospitable.

Wished there was a washer/dryer combo. However this was not a deal breaker for us.

The owners were present and oh so friendly and helpful! Loved this property and the stay there. The room was spacious and beautiful with so many lovely details.

We were a family of 4 with two older kids. The room was very comfortable and spacious yet cozy. We especially enjoyed the traditional Japanese charm that the room and the bathroom exuded.

The staff there were exceedingly welcoming, the rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the location was excellent. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in Kyoto.

    Thought everything was great!

The tradition breakfast was an amazing experience. The staff were fantastic and very helpful and accommodating. The rooms were clean, organized and welcoming. The morning coffee in the room was a great was to start the day. The local beer in the lobby was a great touch.

    More pillows.

The property was lovely, very clean and staff were friendly and helpful. Bedroom was beautiful, lovely comfortable bed and a large dining area. Bathroom was large with all the amenities eg shampoo/conditioner/pj’s etc.

    Nothing, all was great.

Beautiful Kyoto inn with an exceptional staff. We will definitely stay again if we return to Kyoto. The twin rooms have two beds (one twin, one slightly larger than twin) and a tatami area with room for two futons. This was a great setup for our family of four. The hotel provides tea and coffee beans with a grinder and dripper, and there’s a small kitchenette (microwave, induction burner, mini fridge, sink). The bathroom has a wonderful soaking tub. The staff and owners go out of their ways to help, offering suggestions and setting up reservations for dinner and activities, managing luggage sending, and more. They offer incredible in-room kaiseki meals (our family had both the vegan and fish versions) that were among the best meals we had on our trip, and have beer, wine, and sake available for sale. While we didn’t try them, there is also an in-room breakfast (also with a vegan option) and an afternoon tea and sweets service that you can order. The hotel is a short walk to many restaurants and a great bakery. It is a 7-10 minute walk from several subway lines and very close to several buses. There is an in-room washing machine, and a laundromat a couple of blocks away with large fast dryers. Overall, this was a great spot to base our Kyoto stay—highly recommended!

It was a spacious room with a confortable bed and a traditional living room. The stay there was amazing and the staff were friendly. They also helped with returning our bikes to the rental shop nearby, as we were leaving before it opens.
