    Pros +

    • The staff was courteous and knowledgeable, willing to help with suggestions and directions. The location was in a lively neighborhood with lots of options for eating and shopping. Within walking distance of many attractions.
    • The room was simple and traditional, but more than adequate. The hotel's shared bathroom was pleasant with a large hot soaking tub. There were also some modern fixtures, like the touchless faucets and trash can.
    • I showed up bedraggled from the rain, and they kindly let me check in early, which was a relief. My room was very spacious for one person, and the futon comfortable. The bathing area was also clearly clean and well-kept, and also had a charming figure pointing you to where to put your towels.

    Cons -

    • The building is in need of maintenance. The futons were thin and uncomfortable. Cracks in the walls of our rooms. The shared bath showed its age with mildewed tiles, in some places the tiles stairs were breaking away from the rest.
    • For some reason, there never seemed to be hot water in the bathroom sinks.
    • From my specific room, I did have to go downstairs to use the restroom, which wasn’t an issue for me, but might be harder for someone with limited mobility or who needs easy access to the restroom. But I’m sure they can accommodate those needs!

It was tricky to find the place the first time, because it is between two buildings, but the overall experience was awesome. The staff was very attentive since we stepped in, and the room was cleaned daily. The facilities were great. Even though the bathroom is shared, it can only be used by one party at a time, so no bathing with strangers. The location was perfect, in the middle of most of the touristic attractions. It was quiet at night. I would stay here again for sure.

There was nothing negative related to this property. There was some noise outside but was due to some construction happening at night. Unrelated to the property.

Location is great for visiting the castle and garden with many food places near by.

Location was excellent. Lovely traditional ryokan experience in the rooms and communal bathroom. Strong iced coffee was always available in the lobby.

Other guests were noisy and one night we could hear music from a nearby establishment. The single shared toilet on the upper floor is in a tiny room and next to another guest room.

Traditionally working class lodging. AC is good. The bath system worked for me. The room was quite large for this kind of dwellings The location is excellent for the 21th Museum and shopping and restaurants.

Slightly noisy at night. Walls are very thin.

Lovely little spot tucked away. Kind owner and beautiful shared bath. We had no issues waiting for the bath— in fact, we didn’t see any other guests there. The room was spacious and had AC.

After we checked in, we didn’t see the host again. We wanted to ask about doing laundry but couldn’t find him to ask.

It was a nice place to stay and conveniently located.

I wanted the Ryoken experience. But it was hard to adjust to not having chairs in the room.

The owner of Kikunoya Ryokan was so proud of his place and he should be. Nice little ryokan tucked away in a corner. Everyday fresh hot thermos of tea! Lovely onsen, nice room!

    Nothing at all

    8KarenPosted on: 5-5-2025

The location was exceptional: easy walking to delicious restaurants, great shopping & Kenroku-en. The price was very reasonable, thus the ryokan is a great value. I appreciated the wonderful hospitality of hot water & tea in our room. The lovely fresh camellia in our room was a nice bonus!

No breakfast at the hotel, but there was a department store with a food court in the basement within a 7-minute walk, and the bento boxes were fantastic! Close to Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Park. Cabs were available from the department store, so we used them to get to and from the train station (about 15 minutes by cab, about 20 minutes by bus).

Can't think of anything. This is an older house with traditional tatami mats and futon for sleeping, which was very comfortable. Not a good choice if you want western-style rooms, but completely redone bath and western toilets, very modern and sparkling clean. Most of the rooms are upstairs, but we had luggage that would have been a struggle, so the owner put us on the ground floor. I think it's family-run, limited English, but wonderful people.

    We didn't order breakfast.

We like the big bath, very comfortable.

    10IngridPosted on: 1-8-2025

Excellent location and very cozy room. The ryokan is tucked away on a quiet street that is within easy walking distance of Kanazawa Castle Park, Oyama Shrine, Kenroku-en garden, and the Nagamichi District. It's a really beautiful neighborhood to walk around. The family that runs this place is super nice, and the place itself felt very cozy and homey. We only stayed one night but would have loved to stay longer.

The only thing that wasn't spectacular was the wifi (but that may have been specific to our room).

    10NicolePosted on: 11-29-2024

The property is very traditional, so you can really get the full experience of a Japanese ryokan. I slept in a futon, took baths in a traditional setting, ate Japanese breakfast. Overall it was a very relaxing experience. The owners are very friendly and speak good English.

    Nothing, I really liked everything.

    10MateuszPosted on: 11-9-2024

Very nice and clean place, friendly staff and great location near the park and many restaurants. I'll be back! :)

    9MarkPosted on: 10-19-2024

Location is great. Lots of shops, stores, restaurants nearby. Most everything is walkable from here. Host is 4th generation for this ryokan and he is very informative. We mentioned that we like coffee in the mornings, and next morning there was coffee for guests instead of the usual tea. Family is very accommodating.

    7JocelynPosted on: 10-16-2024

Conveniently located near a couple of Kanazawa bus stops. Decor is tasteful and technology in the common spaces and bathroom is modern, such as automatic lights and sinks. Signage ensures it is easy to tell when the shared bath is available for use. Manager was kind and welcoming.

We had hoped to drop off our luggage prior to check in, but the building itself was not open until after 1:00 PM, which was not communicated in advance. We had to trek in the heat to find a coin locker because of this. Some aspects of the room did not feel clean, for example I found someone else's hair under the futon before sleeping in it, and I could only sit in the shared bath for a few minutes because I did not feel relaxed with other peoples' hair floating in it.

Clean and cozy, staff was incredibly nice and helpful. Plenty of bedding options to suit your liking. Great location, next to some small bars, food, and close to shopping areas. Great value, would definitely book again!

Amazing staff, location and price. It was very clean and the facilities were perfect for what we needed.

    All was good.
