Hotel Shila International

It is a basic hotel for amenities but the service by the staff was exceptional. Indrajit was so friendly and helpful. Also the man who helped us to get another blanket and change to a nicer blanket late in the evening when we check in made us glad we chose this hotel. We ordered the breakfast and it was inexpensive but hot and tasty.

I like the behaviour of the staff. The room and the bathroom size were decent. Nooodles is good to order.

Ordered a double king bed; however, it was 2 single beds attached. The room mattress was not cleaned. The quality and cleanliness were really bad. The window glasses in the bathrooms are not good and is stuck.

I am a foreigner who has never been to Kolkata. I randomly booked my room because the Shila is both close to the Kolkata Metro and the Victoria Memorial. Luckily, I was very impressed with the service at the Shila. The concierge greeted me with fresh juice and helped me every step of the way. Breakfast was delicious and my room, while small, was clean and had crown molding and vintage mirrored beauty dresser, which gave it a hint of classic old Kolkata nostalgia. My friend, who is more knowledgeable about the area, said that the neighborhood was safe for walking alone at night. I highly recommend Shila International.

Very much disappointing experience.

I had 3 days booking. 15.04 to 18.04.25. At first for one day and then for two days in continuation to it. I have paid the rent for first day on 15.04.25 itself via debit card. For the remaining two days on 17.4.25 also by using my debit card. The didn't give me any receipt from the hotel other than small online bill generated by the swiping machine. But when I requested for check out during early morning on 18.04.15 for leaving to airport, which is far away from the hotel, they prevented me from leaving the hotel saying that I didn't pay the rent for first day. I showed them my transaction details available in the phone issued by the bank, but they didn't accept it. I had to search even the waste bin to find the only small swiping machine receipt. The hadn't make any entry in the register about my payment made. Later I got the receipt and showed them. Then only they allowed me to go. This delayed my travel for one hour. I was able to reach airport just before closing the boarding. No wifi was given. The AC was placed in a lower level which very uncomfortable for sleeping due to its fan and air flow falling directly on my body.

The behaviour of the staffs was very good.

The room was small and not clean at all. Food quality is not good compared to its price.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the location was great, right in central Kolkata close to a lot of important locations. The facilities were alright, but could be improved significantly.

The cleanliness could be improved, in addition to upgrading the bathroom facilities.

Tea is served in the smallest of cups. No electric kettle provided even after reminders.if this is the state I will not be able to stay here.

Everything is good. The staff is also good and this is near to prime location bit near to the US consulate, planetarium, Victoria memorial, and indian museum

The location is near a dance bar and the music is so loud until 12 pm. So it is hard for sleeping until then

The location is the biggest asset. You can get conveyance to any place in Kolkata from here. Most importantly, you can explore the nearby places by walking.

The noise from the traffic. The toilet needs to be more secured. The lobby in front of the room makes the stay a bit uncomfortable. One piece of advice to fellow travellers: Don't order food here.

Breakfast was good. Food room service was also good and price is reasonable. Location is bang on! Very good for American consulate and OFC location (Jasmine Tower); walking distance.

Toilet could have been cleaner. Room had hardly any space beyond the bed, but you can book spacious rooms for higher price. Water was provided in plastic bottles from a filter located at kitchen, which I did not like. I purchased drinking water during my stay in the hotel.

They didn’t offer any non smoking rooms thought booking.com says online they do, so I slept in a smoking room and all my clothes and bag had smoke smell. Also at 4am I had to leave for the airport and the exit was locked from the outside by a large gate and my taxi driver had to open it from the outside. If he hadn’t have been there I would have been locked in.

The location was good but apart from that nothing else

There were no lifts, cleanliness was not upto mark. Also we had booked triple rooms but the rooms were double bed and we ended up sleeping on floor.

Thoroughly average budget hotel. Would score 1/10 in any other country, but par for the course in city centres across India. Staff were friendly however & location great for the main sights.

First room was cramped & dark with small barred windows overlooking the busy highway overpass. Bathroom an odd setup with a window shared with the adjoining staff toilet. Windowsill littered with used bottles & shards of glass, floor covered with lavae that the next day had erupted into flies, shower head barely worked (although subsequently fixed when raised).Second room much better, but bathroom hadn't been cleaned, previous guest's towel still hanging up, bin not emptied etc. Room had a distinct smell of rat. On one occasion I caught a glimpse of a rodent escaping under the door.As I say, wouldn't be tolerated in most other countries, but for whatever reason this level of hygiene is the norm in budget options throughout Indian cities, hence I've scored it accordingly, 6/10, mostly down to the nice staff.
