Pros +
- Being close to city center
- The facilities, staff and breakfast was lovely!
- Breakfast was awesome, staff really friendly, polite and professional. Many thanks to Pricilla, Britney, Cindy, Cynthia, Kigan, Pindili and Nadia. You all were awesome and I look forward visiting Stellenbosch and your hotel again.
Cons -
- Hotel looks smaller than in photos. Less space. Rooms decoration is a bit outdated.
- The room albeit clean, spacious and comfortable was located right by the big intersection at Dorp Street. So the stopping and starting of cars and revving of motorbikes went on throughout the night and into the early morning.
- To be candid there wasn't anything that I had to complain about

Location
My bed was not made, the room curtains don;t block the outside light, way to light to fall aspeep (room 19)
The staff onsite was very friendly and helpful! Rooms were comfortable I guess.
Felt like a bit of a ghost town, very dead energy. Especially considering the pressure I was getting prior that I need to make payments cause “it’s high season”. I’m actually quite irritated I was getting hounded about advance payment when the T&Cs from booking.com said otherwise. They say they have a spa but the pool was full of leaves and sauna wasn’t working. Expected more from this establishment. My air con kept leaking water.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Bedrooms were very basic but comfortable
I was put in a room that was facing the back corridor which was used by staff to go to the laundry. It was very noisy and no attempt to keep the noise down? Has to keep my curtains drawn the whole time. Also, was this really the only room available? I had booked. At a time there was plenty availability. The hotel is very outdated so sadly was quite empty with not much going on.
Disappointing
Old furniture, layout of my room was not comforting. The breakfast options were very limited, it took me three minutes standing and pouring juice in a glass because it was coming out the tap soooooo slow. I hoped for more from this Protea hotel in comparison to other Protea hotels
Location and staff friendliness
Breakfast
Had a pleasant stay. Like the 'olde time' feel of the rooms and the hotel. Staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. Will definitely there again when visiting Stellenbosch.
Someone forgot to clean out the dustbin in room and toilet.
Nice big room and generous breakfast. The small pool is also beautiful.
Shower could be upgraded and other guests were a bit loud until 1am.
The location
Linen was stained Towels were marked and looked dirtyFood was disgusting and waitress stood at the door to the restaurant watching me eat was very strange Desk chair was so worn you could not sit on it I left and checked into a different hotel
very pretty hotel, small and cosy. breakfast was good and staff friendly
the hotel does need some updating and maintenance but the old style does suit its charm. about a 10 minute walk into the town, you need to consider this if you want to walk home during the dark.
The hotel was convenient for where we picked up our hire car.
We were first offered room 29, which we declined because there was too much road noise, despite having requested a quietly located room.We were then given room 22, which was slightly quieter but very worn. When we were checking out we were asked to pay in full for our second stay which was over 8 weeks away, otherwise they couldn’t guarantee it would be available as it was their very busy season, despite being booked via Booking.comWhen we ran a bath, the water went out as fast as it went in as the plug did not fit properly
The location was perfect for us.The bed was comfortable and this time in Room 23 the bath plug fit!Breakfast was ok and the chef was happy to help.
Reception staff were extremely unhelpful and verging on rude.We asked if we could pay to extend our check out by 3 hours and told the hotel was full and we would have to pay 2424 Rand..ie a full day rate, so we declined. We vacated the room before 11am and sat in the lounge until 1.30pm when our Emirates driver picked us up. At no time did any staff ask if they could help or if we needed anything, which is unbelievable in a hotel. My husband went out and brought take away coffees! At no point were we thanked for our visit or asked if we had enjoyed our stay. The impression staff gave was that we were just in the way!
I had two guests with me from overseas and we booked 3 rooms yet we had to park on the street. Also they had no generator to supply electricity during load-shedding. For the price we paid I expected much more.
The breakfast is fairly good, the location is not as central as I expected
The shower head didn’t work properly, the shower was blocked. Their was supposed to be water in the room every day , that didn’t happen. Their weee not enough two pro plugs in the room.
Comfy bedsSpacious roomCleanGreat breakfastHelpful staff
Staff, cleanliness, location , room sizes
Pool pictures misleading, spa closed, Felt it was more a 3 star than 4 star
Central location, within walking distance of restaurants
No inside,secure parkingAircons stopped working
Fabulous staff and location, just at the bottom of the main road in to Stellenbosch which is full of cafes, restaurants and bars. There's also a pleasant market there on Sunday mornings. The breakfasts were lovely and there was lots of choice as to what to have. The pool is a little gem - not really one for lengths or cardio - but lovely and warm and in a lovely setting to read and relax with comfy sunbeds. The duplex rooms were sizable and we greatly enjoyed our few days staying here.
The kitchen could have had some cups and cutlery in it.
