    Pros +

    • A really good renovation of the original 1960s building. Stylish room fittings, spacious room, comfortable. Special room rate was appreciated, especially as all the tourist hotspots (the Catlins for example) were ridiculously expensive for normal Kiwis.
    • Large room with Spa and balcony.
    • Location was ideal, great bathrooms and attentive staff, both in the hotel and in the bar.

    Cons -

    • Well, not the fault of the hotel, but it's still Invercargill....
    • The rooms were strange. Everything seemingly hadn’t been updated for over 20 years, old locks with brass keys, ancient decor in the hotel as well as having rooms with concerning smells.
    • This is an old hotel and the facilities are yet to be improved.

The receptionist and room service staff were very welcoming. The location is very convenient. It is a walking distance to cafes and restaurants. A good room size to fit a family of four of us.

This is an old hotel and the facilities are yet to be improved.

The staff is just AWESOME !! They accommodated all our requests, super friendly and hospitable staff. The room was really clean, and the hotel is in an excellent location, close to the CBD.

    Invercargil is not very interesting

I had a very comfortable stay at the Kelvin Hotel. The food at the restaurant on Level One was exceptional

One night I had to move to another room (not the fault of Kelvin, due to my plans changing), but the room I had was noisy because of water pipes from other floors, situated in the bathroom.

Great downtown location, comfortable beds, clean room, very friendly and helpful staff.

    4UnknownPosted on: 12-11-2025

    Location

Curtains - too much light from street light and the curtain wasn't full size or blackout type . The room is not suitable to Summer as there is no Air Con or spare fan.The ancient style floor mounted heatpump has fan which is right under the curtain making it allow more light in to the room.

Excellent check in staff. Good that the parking, although offsite, was free and easy to access.

Restaurant was closed on a Sunday night

Good value. Quiet room, comfortable bed, nice restaurant with great complimentary hotel breakfast buffet good central downtown location.

    9WendyPosted on: 10-13-2025

Great value, nice spacious apartment in the City Centre, close to everything, free Wi-Fi & parking.Restaurant meals & cocktails were wonderful.

I didn't like being in a disabled room again with an open shower & the small fridge didn't have a freezer compartment for our freezer blocks.

    Rooms. Old and tired.

    Location

Paper thin walls and bed was next to the adjacent rooms tv so could here the tv all night - very loud

    7AndreaPosted on: 5-2-2025

Staff were helpful. Restaurant for dinner had good options. Nice central location.

Bathroom had stains around edge of bath. Soap dispenser was dirty around edges and should be thrown out and replaced. It would be nice to have a chair to sit in at the desk instead of the small stool.

    Good

The restaurant worker was not friendly, very cold altitude, with reluctant answering questions!

    10KelliPosted on: 4-28-2025

There was a separate toilet to shower in the room - very handy for 3 people in a room (double bed & twin). As well as a second cupboard. Lovely amenities and decor.. Immaculately clean and in the heart of the city - adjacent to the main street mall.

    9ClarkePosted on: 4-28-2025

The room was lovely, dry and warm. Two things the bathroom vent requires cleaning out, Toilet requires an extractor fan and heat pump floor heater is situated under a curtain.

No extrator fan in bathroom and toilet

The pub with the locals company was the best of the stay at the Kelvins.

Room was smelly- smelled like mould and wet dog. It made me feel sick within first 10 minutes we were there. Had to asked to be moved to another room. Bedding was trined and ‘bleached’ out. Not worth the price. Would not recommend the stay!

    6JennyPosted on: 4-25-2025

Central location. Free parking. Reasonable cost. New bathroom. Good heating available.

The bed was old and soft and we experienced Roll together. Duvet was light and lacked substance. Smart TV was a bonus as was the newly appointed bathroom. Toilet room still outdated. No view from our room. Just a brick wall.
