I'm a light breakfast eater and a vegetarian so I find the breakfast pricing high in most hotels. However, it's worth the convenience of not having to leave the building on a relaxing morning, while on vacation. Along with the buffet of fruit, cereals, cheese, nuts, and healthy superfood condiments, juices, breads & croissant with jams available, thinly sliced meats for those who partake, you can order eggs hot from the kitchen. The atmosphere for breakfast was enhanced by relaxing classical music played softly. We had one dinner at the restaurant and it was lovely. The owners staff the front desk, act as concierge, cook for and serve in the restaurant. They were the best hosts, helping us acquire tickets, making phone calls (we're English speakers), and recommended how to make the most of our time. The staff even researched a Paris hotel for us, for our last few nights in France. Their service overall was that of friends helping friends have the best time in this magical area. There is convenient parking just across the two lane street. Hotel Cro Magnon is at the end of the main street through town, so it's in a calm setting without a lot of foot traffic going by. The Vezere River is across the street with a river walk trail and grassy areas and picnic tables. There is a train track that accommodates the small 2 car train that goes through town a few times a day, but not late into the evening. The hotel is excellently located to walk everywhere, including to many of the prehistory caves, and all of the shops and restaurants on the main road. Les Eyzies is ground zero for a prehistory experience. I experienced a palpable peace here, that is almost otherworldly. We only had 4 nights, and I wish I could have had another few weeks to explore and integrate this amazing area. If I had another opportunity to travel to France, this is where I would come.

The personal attention from the owners and the evident acts that this is a labor of love. The location was a great homebase for continuing my exploration of prehistoric cave art, and enjoying the Dordogne river valley. I also enjoyed dinner there my first of two nights… it was better than dining at Nosco the 2nd night (in the same town), but not as wonderful as dining at L’Esplanade in Domme the 2 nights before I came to this property.

That the pool was cold… it was therapeutic to soak my tired feet, but I wouldn’t have been able to get in. And I would’ve enjoyed getting in! I’m sure later in the season it’s wonderful… my stay was in early April.

The staff was lovely and welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable. Was nice to have a pool as it was hotter than expected. Very close to the caves.

It was a little loud in the mornings due to the road being right there. Minor issue. Honestly I wish I had stayed on another day!

Disappointing after the hotel was highly recommended. Dinner was good.

Arrived at 2.30pm on bicycles in pouring rain to discover the hotel is closed until 3pm! 2nd floor Room No 1 was very small, old chipped wooden furniture, mattress too small for the bed, no heating worked.Would rather have paid more and be given a decent furnished room.

It is a nice old hotel in the wonderful town of Les Eyzies. We spent 2 nights there. It was the end of the season so restaurants/cafées were closing down. It is a strange fact about the Dordogne region that all restaurants feel you must eat foie gras and confit de canard. At every meal. This was one reason for choosing Le Cro-Magnon. It has a chef who is highly praised for his imaginative food. But...

The Cro-Magnon says its restaurant is open in the evening all through September. This turned out to be false. The two nights we stayed there the restaurant was closed. I was stunned because having an open restaurant was the prime reason for choosing Le Cro-Magnon. I'll say no more because even now thinking about it just makes me cross.Oh, and our bathroom had a bath but it was a bath fit for children. My wife could just squat in it. I couldn't get in at all.

    Nothing really

Le Cro Magnon is extremely well located. It's a very beautiful house, with a garden shaded by trees. A few stairs take you to a private swimming pool surrounded by a well tended garden with mature plants, trees and flowers. It's pure magic. The owner comes regularly to ask if you want a refreshment. We choose the aperol with homemade limoncello. very refreshing! Our room was very Art Deco, with deep emerald greens and gold. A very elegant bathroom. Les Eyzies is a very quiet place, so no noise at all at night. We had dinner at the restaurant. I choose the vegetarian options, my husband meat and fish. Both excellent. Very French cuisine with a Belgian twist.

    Should have booked more nights....

A comfortable room in a beautifully positioned and decorated hotel. Run by two people who clearly put a lot of attention into detail. The outside space, the parking, the pool and the immediate proximity to the Cro Magnon rock shelter added to the appeal.

Excellent breakfast, the period feel of the building, and the surprise of the upper floor being built into the rock face.

    9ManohariPosted on: 8-13-2024

It was in a great location and was a fascinating building. They have built it into the rocks in some parts of the hotel. Lovely, small pool to cool down after a long day. Good spacious bedroom and a nice bathroom. Great outdoor dinning under trees and shade.

Location on the edge of town was great. Breakfast was also of the highest order. Fellow tourists were most friendly and the hosts were the friendliest of all.
