Pros +
- The breakfast was amazing and memorable and the staff very helpful and kind.
- The room, the historical building, and the breakfast was very amazing!
- The hotel feels old and not really well maintained regardless of the style. Half of the time the staff was really rude, depending on who was at the reception.
Cons -
- No AC - other than that it was perfect!
- Too pricey for the service offered, I would prefer another hotel in Jena.
- If you want to stay there with your pet, only certain more expensive room types are available, which van make your stay rather pricey. Depending on the location of your room it might be perfectly quiet or rather noisy. If you're sensitive to noise, ask for a quiet room!

We have stayed in the Schwarzer Bär on several occasions and have never been disappointed. The rooms are top-notch, the breakfast is superb and parking is available on site. Your pet is also welcome and they even provide you with a little snack!

The staff was very friendly and pleasant. The hotel is located within walking distance of the Jena Planetarium. We were able to store our luggage between check out and actually leaving for the train station. Reception personnel called a taxi for us.
No issues!
Location is pretty cool - very close to JenTower and center of the city. Also breakfast is really good and the coffee from the Nespresso machine!
This time I got an old room with old furniture (like in the '90s) which I really didn't like. On my previous stay (in January) the personnel gave me a new, completely refurbished room.
The location is great. Everything in the city centre is within walking distance. The restaurant was okay and the food selection at breakfast was sufficient.
The room was freezing! We stayed for one night in February and had to sleep with all our clothes on. The room temperature could be adjusted in theory but only for a while before the radiator reset to its default settings. When we first got to our room, one of our pillows was wet. The parking lot is tiny. It’s rather tricky to get to with a regularly sized or large car.The staff wasn’t particularly helpful or friendly. They actually told us to move to a smaller table at breakfast because “otherwise it doesn’t give a good impression”.
Large rooms and clean comfortable roomsFriendly staffHood location close to the town centre
Wifi connection in rooms not always strong
Central location near the university, attractions, and markets. Charming historical environment. Traditional look of the hotel's lobby, which was welcoming and quaint. Excellent breakfast facility and meal quality. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Coming from North America, I felt cold in the room and without ability to adjust the temperature. However, this was the same with other accommodations as well as private homes I visited, clearly the norm in an energy-conserving environment. The heat does get turned up a bit at what I assume are strategic times.
Excellent location near the center. Very clean.
Wifi was not great, and room was a little dated
Good location and nice hotel full of history.
There was a mix-up with our reservation which took a few minutes to sort out. (We had booked a double room but the assigned room was a single.) The "new" room's curtains had been open to the full sun all day on one of the hottest days of the year (36 degrees Celsius/ 97 Fahrenheit). So the room and everything in it was like a pizza oven, and without air conditioning. (The rest of the hotel was surprisingly chilly, we had dinner there too.) At night we opened the windows for airflow and got mosquito bites... not a great night of sleep. Oh, and at the birthday dinner that we attended there, it took the waiter forever (30 Mins...) to get the check and then, at the table in front of all guests, he proclaimed the full amount to the hostess. What a strange thing to do.
Friendly people and very good location.Excellent breakfast
Booked a non-smoking room but, someone had smoked heavily. Had to ask for towels and a second pillow. Water was not replaced in a 3 days stay. This should be standard.
The hotel is very close to the city centre. Easy check-in. Comfortable beds in a very big room. The en-suite bathroom with shower, whilst small, had everything we needed, the de-mascara cloth was a nice touch I haven't seen before.
It was a hot summer day and due to the absence of an AC the room was quite warm, we used the fan all night but still slept well. Having to pay for the parking was not a nice surprise (probably mentioned some win the booking but wasn't aware of it until check-in).
This historic hotel is close to the city centre, 5 minutes from the Jena Tower. The room is pretty comfortable, free WiFi works very well, and breakfast is rich.
Rooms that are close to the tram stop a a little bit noisy, but not too much.Nothing else.
Since this review should reach a larger audience, I am specifically writing in English. The staff of this hotel cares about its guests, breakfasts are varied, tasty and not counted on the minimum. In addition, the staff tries in earnest to make your stay as comfortable as possible. In our case, it was necessary to provide a gluten-free meal. We asked the hotel before arriving to help us. What was our positive surprise as each day the Spouse received warm gluten-free bread and rolls to the table. A dream, thank you very much.
One could ask that the staff in charge of the rooms clean the room more often during a multi-day stay and replenish this and that.
Nice part of the city. Clean place. Old internal design.
Tram next to the hotel - very loud. Lack of air condition in the room. We tried to drink a bear in a hotel restaurant but they inform us that it is not possible since there is some event there. So restaurant was closed even for hotel guests.
The staff was very friendly and helpfull ! The location is excellenet and everything is nearby on foot. Eventhought it is close to the street it was very quiet when the windows are closed so no trouble sleeping or working.
The breakfast is too expensive to add.
Historic house
No upgrade although I stayed several time and paid full rate. No other perks. Hotel chains offer more.
Breakfast was really good. The room was ok, but the bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen. The location is good, quite central. The staff was very friendly. I had forgotten my suitcase on the train and I was therefore very happy that they had both reserve kits of a toothbrush and of razor blades to spare.
The room could have been a bit more cozy, it was a bit stiff.
Friendly staff always helpful, nice dining room and very good food,
Wifi did not work unfortunately, room temperature control was locked but did work just had to keep re-setting it
