About

Castello di Gargonza is a privately owned Tuscan village offering accommodations from its hilltop location, between Arezzo and Siena. The Valdichiana Valley and a 500-hectare forest surround the village. Original terracotta floors and wood-beam ceilings are some of the original furnishings of Gargonza's apartments and rooms. An outdoor pool, private gardens and a conference center are all within the walls of this medieval property. St. Tiburzio and St. Susanna Church are also found here. La Torre di Gargonza restaurant is on site and open every day except on tuesdays. Homemade pasta and traditional Tuscan cuisine are served daily, while vegetarian, gluten-free and Jewish options are available on request.

    Pros +

    • The surroundings were stunning, Neri was wonderful to speak with and took great care of us, the breakfast was great and dinner at the ristorante was incredible! We loved the pool as well. It was a respite.
    • Castello di Gargonza was a dream stay! A gorgeous complex of historic buildings with incredible vistas. A restaurant with delicious, gourmet food and extensive wine list -- at very reasonable prices. And a staff that is genuinely excellent -- helpful, welcoming, etc. The owner himself was lovely and made us feel at home. We extended our stay, we enjoyed it so much. If you're looking for peaceful countryside, relaxed elegance, and Tuscan history -- I'd stay here!
    • We had a wonderful stay at Castello di Gargonza! The property is charming, the staff exceptionally welcoming, and our great room made the experience even more special. The food at their restaurant was delicious. Highly recommended—we look forward to returning soon!"

    Cons -

    • I suppose the only thing was it was a bit on the high end of pricing for us but still wonderful.
    • Finding the reception desk was a bit challenging. There was only one sign at the bottom of the hill, but nothing at the top to say where to go. I walked around the entire building before I found someone who could help me find it. The breakfast was sadly not much. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed on Tuesday’s (as was most of the town), so that was also a bit disappointing. Both these things aside, it was a lovely experience and we’re glad we went.
    • Long winding road to get there but well worth the effort.

The location is stunning!!! Perfect for a fairy tale wedding. So quiet and peaceful. Our bathroom was beautiful.

This was the coolest accommodation I have ever experienced. The castle was so authentic and absolutely stunning but with all the modern comforts of home. The host even gave us a little tour of the tower which was a highlight for my 10yr old son. Food at the restaurant was great.

Long winding road to get there but well worth the effort.

Beautiful landscape, swimming pool, friendly staff

Insects in the rooms that got into my suitcase. Very hot and clammy rooms, makeshift air conditioner with pipes leaking water

Castello di Gargonza is a very special place. The views from our suite were sublime and my morning swim was heavenly! Our room was extremely comfortable - air-conditioned, with an enormous, super-comfortable bed and a huge bathroom. Decor-wise, it all looked newly done. The breakfast was great and we had a delicious lunch - homemade truffle pasta (which would have cost double in England!). The staff are all lovely and everything is extremely good value for money. The journey from Florence airport was easy and the drive up to Gargonza is breathtaking. It is very well positioned for visiting all our favourite places in Tuscany. We are already planning our next visit.

Nothing - we had a great stay.

The location and ambience of the castle. I love the surroundings and how peaceful it is. I also like the people that work at the castle. They are very helpful and supportive in every way.

    Nothing really.

Breakfast was absolutely delightful, the cozy fireplace added a wonderful touch, and the location was simply fantastic. It's a remarkably tranquil haven, perfect for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of a bustling city.

The quality of the restaurant's food could have been better, and the prices are a bit high.

Very unique location. Antique houses turned into very comfortable apartments.Members of the owning family take great care of their guests.

    5FrankPosted on: 9-17-2023

    Unique historic question

To basis, no airco in rooms (only mobile units who make enormous an out of noice and cannot keep up with heat at night), quite uncomfortable matresses. The location has al the potential to be waw, yet to date misses the coziness that this could offer.

Beautiful grounds, pool and staff! We loved everything.

Charming property with a lovely pool. The breakfast was great and the restaurant had great atmosphere.

The rooms were nice but a bit musty and no AC which became an issue during a heat wave. The pool is great but it was really far away from the rooms down a steep hill. The coffee bar looked permanently closed and the bodega only sells drinks so you can’t really make a day of the pool without food or snacks. The location is out of the way from many of the towns we visited in Tuscany and it didn’t feel built up enough food/amenity wise to spend a day relaxing by the pool. We also had a rude waitress at the restaurant. Despite having reservations she wanted to seat us inside (where it was 15-20 degrees warmer) instead of the charming courtyard where literally every other table was seated. I suspect this was because we were the only family with kids (who are well behaved!) She got quite frustrated at our request but eventually the rest of the staff intervened.

Wonderful staff. Very helpful. Clean and beautiful property. Peaceful.

Lovely old village with beautiful surroundings

The room whilst pleasant was smaller and not as nice as the room in the photograph shown on Booking.com

    Beautiful castle In beautiful Tuscany

Not within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. You need a car to get around. No public transportation options.

    the view, the scenery

the bed were comfortable but the living room of the family room was quite precarious.

    10YanivPosted on: 3-22-2023

Great experience in a lovely historical castle. Our room was wide, well designed and we enjoyed the wide comfort bed and the heat of the classical fireplace. Breakfast was rich and tasty. The staff is very kind and friendly.

No wifi and no cellular service at the room. The wifi worked Only at the public areas of the accommodation.

Castello di Gargonza is exactly what it promises to be – a somewhat remote medieval castle complex, complete with thick defensive walls and a tall tower. Views of sunset and sunrise are striking, staff speak English well, and parking is easy. Our meal at their restaurant was excellent. Daily breakfast includes an extensive array of meats, cheese, yogurt, and pastry, as well as some options like scrambled eggs. When we wanted to book a cellar tour in nearby Montepulciano, the front desk very kindly called for the reservation on our behalf.

Fair warning – some aspects of the accommodations are quite rustic. In our room, the air conditioner was not functioning, the bed felt quite hard, and chinks around the windows allowed some bugs inside. In our friends’ room, there was no shower (only a tub and a spray wand), and the refrigerator had been removed.
