About
We are on the Varese shores of Lake Maggiore, in the town of Laveno-Mombello. The Hotel il Porticciolo is located in an absolutely privileged position, perched on the rock between the hill and the lake, and from every corner of the property you can enjoy the charm of a landscape that ranges from Verbania, with the Borromean Islands, to Monte Rosa, from the center of Laveno Mombello to Monte Sasso del Ferro, from whose summit the entire lake dominates. The spaces of Il Porticciolo are distributed over 4 floors: at the highest point, the most panoramic, there is the indoor swimming pool and the SPA, recently renovated (2021); on the second and third floors there are 11 rooms and junior suites, all with a private balcony overlooking the lake; the lower level is intended for the two restaurants - La Tavola, 1 Michelin Star and l'Osteria -, the breakfast room and the cantilevered outdoor terrace, with a pier for mooring boats. The 11 deluxe rooms and junior suites – from 25 to 55 m2 – are among the most spacious in the area. The philosophy has always been to recreate a homely, warm and welcoming atmosphere, without ever diverting attention from the lake which moves slowly and placidly beyond the large windows. The large arched windows perfectly frame the colors of a landscape that changes from the blue of the water, to the green of the mountains, up to the peaks of Monte Rosa. Crossing the threshold of the private terraces, present in each room, the sounds and scents of these places complete our idea of hospitality. Wi-fi and satellite television are available in all rooms.

Pros +
- The staff was super friendly and tried to accommodate all our requests. The room was good, with all necessary amnesties.
- View of the lake
- Very clean and comfortable room, and the staff was very helpful. The view of the lake from the balcony is great, and a very good breakfast.
Cons -
- I did not like the spa experience, which looked like an abandoned facility. The pool was not fully working, missing the massage function, and there was no atmosphere. There was no ambiental music or water and fruits available. Overall the SPA is oversold, would nkt recommend it.
- Difficult to walk into town… no taxis
- Hotel itself is very nice - a good place to stay. The one drawback is the walk to the hotel. The last part of the walk is up a narrow mountain road. It is not steep at all, but is a little harrowing giving the curves in the road.

Room had nice balcony.
Only accessible by car or bywalk along dangerous road to get to town area and ferry. Taxis never around in town. Staff not cheerful.
The location was a little out of the centre, but we were able to walk to town or drive. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful. The room had lovely views and had what we needed. It was clean, and towels changed daily, though we were happy to keep our towels and save water and the environment. Breakfast was fine. We had dinner in the Osteria and found the food was very average. The decor of the hotel was a little dated and could use an update.
Both positive and not so positive is mentioned below.
The location is breathtaking -right on the water -you could not get a better position on the lake. The convenience of having a restaurant ( two) on the property was great not to have to leave after a long days drive .Our room was very clean with nespresso machine and gowns provided -such a special property !
Everything about the hotel was great except we found the male owner very unfriendly-not sure why but not even able to greet and makes one feel very unwelcome-the rest of the staff and female owner however were lovely I think if you are in the hospitality industry one should try at least to be more charming -I thought it was a bad day but after reading comments on various platforms seems like the norm .
Beautiful lake view. Private balcony. Pool was nice and quiet
The water pressure in the shower was bad
it was well located and with easy access to the area. nice restaurant and friendly Staff. The owner a bit grumpy and difficult to deal with. AC deficient specially during this summer season.
AC Deficient
A bit disappointing. Not ready for guests and service slow as not enough staffp
Bathroom was bery poorly thought out in terms of layout and lighting
Amazing view and great location. But the hotel has definitely seen better days. And it was very hard to communicate with the staff, since the didn’t speak much English.
As said the hotel isn’t in great shape. There are holes and water damage in the ceilings, holes the bathing bridge, the pool is not clean and in general the hotel needs a bit of a make-over. The pictures are not very accurate.
Perfect location excellent view of the lake short walk to nearest town very clean and modern facilities very friendly staff they couldn’t do more if they tried . Would happily go again great food much enjoyed ourselves
Precious view; with the hotel located directly at the Lago maggiore. Stunning sunset out of the balcony. The staff is ni
Wonderful view from balcony right over the water. Snow capped mountains in the distance and beautiful lake view. It's a 12 minute walk from the train station which is right next to the ferry dock. Easy to take the ferry to the Borromeo Islands. The indoor heated pool was spectacular. With great views of the lake. The water temperature was 84°F and very pleasant.
The 12 minute walk from the train station is a little challenging. It's a curvy road without much sidewalk, so keep alert as cars pass by.
Fantastic views over the lake.
Claims room safes and pay for view tv. No pay for view tv. 1 english channel CNN. No room safe in suite 36Our room badly needed a refresh.Continental breakfast offered had cheapest ingredients. Not what you expect for prices paid.
Great view. Clean. Nice pool and great saunas
Narrow walkaways
Michelin star restaurant was exquisite. Such a surprising gem!
You ideally need a car to get there but parking easy and very close to town & ferries, plus car ferry across to Stressa.
The view from the rooms and the swimming pool.
The walk to the town was about 15mins but along a busy road with no pavement so at night it could be dangerous. The hotel had no atmosphere, it was quite gloomy. The main restaurant was far too expensive and the other one was uninspiring. The manager was rather unfriendly.
WHAT A GREAT PLACE - Family owned hotel & spa, on the lake. Human size. Sympathatic team. Restaurant is excellent and the wine card is just crazy ! The spa is brand new, nice swimming pool, with sauna, turkish bath, showers, transat with view on the lake. Nice room all with view on the lake and montain. Nice parking even for big car... WE DO RECOMMAND THAT PLACE !
NOTHING !
The pool and breakfast was great!
We knew in advance that the Restaurants were closed for a few days, however, it’s not ideal to reach the small town by foot as there was no pave way and the street is very dark
Breakfast was fantastic, especially on the terrace over the lake. Our room (with a view of the lake)was spacious and always clean. The owners were very helpful, thank you.
The only minor complaint - sometimes there was air conditioning noise from the kitchen!
