Pros +
- The grounds are outstanding and the food was good. The Inn looks beautiful from the outside. It was lovely to have a fireplace in the room as we arrived on a cold misty day
- Have been to Halliwell twice on our Anniversaries. Staff very sweet and accommodating. Loved the log fires. It gave a cozy atmosphere.
- Halliwell Country Inn was simply wonderful—truly nothing not to like! The entire atmosphere was incredibly peaceful, the accommodation was both comfortable and spotlessly clean, and the beautiful views made for a perfect getaway. A major highlight was the divine dinner at the on-site restaurant. I highly recommend this gem!
Cons -
- The carpets and couch have seen better days
- I'm afraid our beds were worn and we both woke with backache. I know its called the OLD Halliwell, but the decor is in great need of revamping.

Very spacious, beautiful gardens, friendly staff
We have two critical accommodation requirements: an evening meal for my wife and a room with a bath. We don't find many establishments in our price range that meet those requirements, and of those we've tried Halliwell Country Inn is by far the best value. And if you then appreciate that it's really comfortable with a great environment and first rate service, then ...
Lovely stay overall. Great service from staff. Great location. Bed was so comfortable. Dinner at hotel was rather pleasant.
Really nitpicking here, but the lighting in the bathroom and living area could be looked at.There seems to be a lack of personal touches in the hotel. Not once during our stay was the fire in the lounge ever lit, despite the temperature warranting such. Earlier reviews mention homemade rusks in the rooms, none were present during our stay. There is also no form of hotel guide in each room, describing hotel policies, facilities etc.
if it's country living you want to experience, that's exactly what you get at Old Halliwell! Property was cozy and felt like a home away from home. Both supper and breakfast was amazing. We don't eat beef or Pork and the restaurant provided alternatives at no additional charge for breakfast. The horses on the property were a highlight!
-Spacious rooms, very clean linen, a real suite, large bath tub, plenty hot water, extra heats (oil heater, hot water bottle, free firewood and lighters, towel warming pipes), beautiful garden view, wide windows- Breakfast....more like brunch!! Tasty and filling....wife's favourite was the blueberry pancakes.....mine was the Soups of the day with jeqe (Zulu steam bread)!!- Dinner...the restaurant well laid out, friendly guests, fireplace throughout the facilities, expansive and clean toilets......gourmet burgers really gourmet!!:-) - Chef Ndumiso needs a 1000 feathers in his cap!!! Freshly baked and cooked meals.....scrumptious and to die for....- Servers: all polite and most helpful ....Nonjabulo (so knowledgeable about different mixed drinks, hard working and never shows fatigue!! Nelly and Sindy most warm and pleasant, makes the meals worth eating!!- Reception: Thembeka ALWAYS ready to assist with any request, always with a smile and courteous....the staff are the real assets to Halliwell Country Inn- Lynn and Anne went out of their way to get their team work round to setting up the perfect 34th wedding anniversary during dinner and breakfast....thanks for the flowers and chocolates!!REAL VALUE FOR MONEY
NIX!!Wish we could have afforded to stay for AT LEAST a week!!
Country feel
We requested for extra bedding on the 2 single beds, but this did not arrive. We were cold on the first night due to the thin duvet on the beds. The curtains need to be fixed up as they are not hung very neatly. The 2 pictures above the single beds are not aligned.Breakfast last morning had the sour dough toast with avoThe lettuce was going old in placesDo not think we had sour dough bread slice, as I do eat this at home. For the price R115 I think it is over priced for 1 small slice of bread.
Shower was good. Maybe just shower curtain to avoid any overflow/splashes.Dinner was simple, adequate and nice. Dinner was also fine.Room was comfortable, fireplace exceptional (Room 3).Staff exceptionally friendly.
Nothing to complain about.
Amazing location along with friendly and helpful staff
The room had nails sticking out in the carpet area which hurt us, so maintenance was an issue. Also, we were told that the toiletries (soap, shampoo etc) will not be replenished after the first day of stay which was odd.
Location is breathtaking, even in the most and the rain. Potholes are no fault of the property. Property is rustic and unique
The property is tired and needs fresh eyes to look into the detail. Not an easy upkeep in that moist climate.
We only stayed one night but it was lovely. Very spacious rooms with comfortable beds and great views in the morning. We enjoyed a very tasty breakfast and lovely dinner. The waitress was great.
Nothing I can think of
The place is a beautiful farm house set in a beautiful area. It gives a real farm feel with all the beautiful horses grazing nearby..Cozy comfortable and clean.
We enjoyed the relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere at this charming old world country inn. The surroundings are tranquil and picturesque and the main old building has so much character. A few improvements and extra touches would make it so much better. The lady who served in the bar was also doing other duties such as waitressing, and so on occasion we had to look for her. She was however very friendly and helpful. A greater variety of drinks is needed in the bar. They had no sherry other than Old Brown, and no port. The menu is rather limited and could be expanded with some interesting seasonal or daily specials. I was looking forward to the lamb shank (for a few days before our arrival as I’d had it before) and it was out of stock. Food is good, freshly prepared and comes with lovely vegetables. Breakfast is very good. The chef is a master at making perfect poached eggs! The interior of the main building needs better lighting in the form of warm white bulbs. A simple fix. They use cool white bulbs and some are missing. This greatly detracts from the ambiance and makes it dingy and lacking in a warm atmosphere. Some more flowers and foliage from their gardens all over the hotel would be a lovely touch. We love the fireplaces in the rooms and that they supply firewood. Overall a lovely place and such excellent value for money! We look forward to our next visit!
Overall it was super relaxing and Tranquil and historical, very friendly laid back people and good f
Would of loved to play some pool, darts and perhaps horse riding option.
We enjoyed the tranquility, lovely breakfast and amazing staff. Anne, Lynne and Richard were amazing hosts and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. We cannot wait to return.
